Trump encourages violence against CNN reporters

Donald Trump today posted a tweet encouraging and promoting violence against CNN reporters.

This comes on the heels of Trump spokesperson Sarah Huckabee claiming falsely that Trump has never called for violence.

In fact, Trump repeatedly called for violence during the presidential campaign, and was routinely criticized for it.

It also comes on the heels of Trump’s misogynist tweets about “Morning Joe” cohost Mike Brzezinski, that were so mean and sexist it has led many to question Trump’s mental health.

Mashable has a mash up of Trump’s repeated calls for violence:

And just this morning, Trump joked to his 30 million followers about beating up CNN reporters, when we are already in a climate where reporters are routinely threatened.

A CNN reporter tweeted me this morning, concerned that I was mischaracterizing Trump, and that my story is part of the “outrage machine.” In fact, CNN’s PR dept. responded to Trump’s post by quoting Sarah Huckabee’s lie about Trump never promoting violence. Their clear point: Trump just promoted and encouraged violence against CNN reporters. And that’s exactly what I wrote. I just don’t see a qualitative difference between “calls for” and “encourages or promotes.”

ABC’s Martha Raddatz said this morning that the tweet “seems like a threat.” Raddatz continued, “you don’t think that’s a threat to anyone, you don’t think that’s sending a message ‘do that to the media, do that to CNN’?”

The Washington Post agrees:

And even uber-conservative former congressman Joe Walsh was appalled:

Trump is making this appeal for his supporters to assault reporters only weeks after a nut tried to assassinate members of Congress playing softball. It’s also interesting to note that Trump’s family and staff expressed outrage over Kathy Griffin’s inappropriate joke about beheading Trump. (We didn’t hear many reporters claiming the outrage against Griffin was overblown. And for the record, I was just as tough on Kathy Griffin.) And then Trump himself calls for reporters to be beaten.

This is the man leading the effort to repeal Obamacare. This is the man who has chosen to decimate pre-existing condition protections and Medicaid. If you want to know whether you should trust the health care bill the Republicans are working on, you need not look any farther than the man who is in charge of the entire Obamacare repeal effort.

If you don’t think Donald Trump is capable of legislative violence against millions of Americans, you haven’t been watching.

And you think that Trump is really interested in helping the working class?
    Dream on.
I feel sorry for you, and frankly, I don’t believe that you have ever been a liberal.

  2. PolymathLevel8 says:

It looks like pro wrestling. Big deal.
But you all shocked and appalled over it. Please. I assume that’s because you lost the working class, don’t understand our issues, and need something to distract attention from your own failures.
I’ve been a liberal for forty years. Having to give it up now, because the relativist left have hijacked the brand, is breaking my heart.

So, on the heels of Kathy Griffin’s little contretemps, for which everyone chastised her resoundingly causing her to make a public apology, we have “little hands” Trump doing something like this–and instead of apologizing, we have his wife, Hucksterbee the 2nd, and other traitorous and amoral Administration criminals saying if the fat orange blob gets hurt, he comes at his enemies 10Xs worse. That’s not the sign of a great president–it’s the sign of mental illness; and his followers show the same symptoms when they say “make America great” all the while dragging it through the mud. Corruption as good; good is bad.

Not to people with no sense of humor.

Let’s put this in further context.

Griffin has zero history of violence of any kind. Trump has called on his supporters to attack press people at his rallies. And only a couple of weeks ago a Republican body-slammed a reporter and got elected anyway.

Griffin’s photo was from a shoot with a rather edgy photographer. Trump’s video is from a guy who posts racist and anti-semitic content on reddit, including a recent one with stars of David beside the pics of all the Jewish on-air people at CNN.

No, not the least bit equivalent.

And finally, Griffin apologized on video (herself, not through a publicist) for the photo within hours of it going public. (She wasn’t the one that released it.) Is Trump going to apologize for this video?

Wrestling vs beheading. Aren’t you the folks that always assert false equivalency?

  7. Houndentenor says:

Of course, the people who went apeshit of a pic with Kathy Griffin holding an obviously fake Trump head now claim this was just a joke and we should get over it.

I’m so revolted by this spectacle, and have been for over a year now, that I just can’t think of anything new to say. This is who Trump is. It’s who he’s always been. Anyone who says differently is lying or just didn’t want to see it because they were making money by ignoring it. The damage is severe and ongoing. We are collapsing as a country and the rest of the world can see it clearly. We won’t recover our reputation from this in my lifetime. How could we? “Oops, our bad!” Is not going to cover it. Republicans worked tirelessly for 30 years to create a white working class base of people who hated liberals so badly that they’d vote to take away their own health care and close their own local hospitals out of spite. This is the end game. Welcome to the decline and fall of America.

Right on the heels of the NRA calling for violence against protesters. Trump is trying to insight violence. Enough already. Lock him up!!!

  10. noodle says:

    It was a fuckin joke.

  11. Demosthenes says:

Trump hates the free press. It’s why he not only threatens or demeans them, but cuts back on press interviews (except with sycophants like Sean Hannity), refuses to give press conferences, and stymies access.
