Elon Musk, you said you weighed in with Trump on Climate. How’d that go?

A number of us asked a few months back why self-professed do-good corporate execs like Tesla/SpaceX CEO Elon Musk had signed up for Donald Trump’s “manufacturing council.” We felt that it simply gave Trump cover for abominable policies like the Muslim ban and gutting climate change accords.

Initially, Elon Musk had publicly defended the Muslim ban. But after the public outcry, he fortunately changed his tune.

And on climate change, and the Paris Accords in particular, Musk said he personally raised the issue with Trump earlier this year, and he was “cautiously optimistic of a positive decision.”

Elon Musk Trump Paris

Now that Trump is days away from deciding on whether to pull out of the Paris Accords — and all indications are that he will withdraw — corporate leaders like Musk need to reevaluate their presence on Trump’s business councils.

If Trump withdraws from Paris, it will be hugely devastating to the fight against climate change. And it will be equally devastating to CEOs like Musk who promised us their presence in the White House would help moderate Trump’s policy excesses. If Trump pulls out, then Musk and his fellow CEOs will be little more than trophies.

Trump said on Twitter this morning that he would be deciding imminently on what to do with Paris. Elon Musk may only have a matter of hours to prove that his continued presence on Trump’s manufacturing council was worth it.

Otherwise, it’s time for Musk to withdraw from the Trump Accords.

The right has, over the last 40 years, demonized certain words and icons of the left. The word “liberal” is now considered a rip, the Affordable Care Act ( I was never named “ObamaCare) is now “ObamaCare” and is now considered not just an ineffective solution for our awful health care “system” , but the cause of it. Barack Obama, Hillary ( “Dirty Hillary”) Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, etc., are all touted as demons whose accomplishments need to be erased.
The TRUTH about all of this just simply doesnt matter. If you had health insurance and it went up over 8 years, the right believes it never would have happened had the ACA not been enacted, even though studies have shown it would have. Global warming exists, and we have caused it, but there’s some
arrogant physicist from Norway ( NOT a climate scientist) who thinks the earth is, obviously, flat.
Trump is just looking for scalps to wave at the ignorant voters who read the Russian facebook posts and believe that all that has been done needs to be undone, and that this boorish egomaniacal idiot is just the man to do it ( because he will tell you that).

Given his responsibilities, I still maintain that he had to try.

  3. Demosthenes says:

Trump doesn’t care what anyone says about the science of global warming. President Obama agreed with the overwhelming consensus of climatologists and tried to fight it. Trump knows the Paris Accord was a great accomplishment of the Obama Administration. Trump therefore seeks to destroy the Paris Accord. Trump’s agenda is to erase all of the good things President Obama did, and he doesn’t care about anything else.

Apparently, Musk is finally realizing he’s been providing cover, not advice any sane, smart leader/businessman would take. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/elon-musk-leave-trump-council-paris-agreement_us_592f0501e4b0e09b11ed0722?ncid=inblnkushpmg00000009
