BREAKING: DOJ appoints special counsel to investigate Russia-Trump

The Department of Justice has just appointed a special counsel to investigate Russia’s involvement in our election, and any collusion by Trump and his associates.

The investigation will be led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who was originally appointed director by George W. Bush, and then asked to remain on the job for another two years by President Obama. So this was a smart move, in terms of being a quasi-bipartisan pick.

Also interesting, the decision to appoint the special counsel was made by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who was pilloried last week for drafting a letter to help Donald Trump fire now-former FBI Director James Comey. So it’s very interesting that Rosenstein was the person to make this decision (Attorney General Sessions couldn’t make the decision, as he had to recuse himself from all Russia-investigation-related decisions.) Rosenstein has clearly, at least in part, reestablished his independence. And at the same time, Donald Trump must be kicking himself for thinking Rosenstein was his man.

Robert Mueller

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller.

And this also means that no longer can Donald Trump influence the investigation. According to CBS News, the special counsel will be a civil servant, and will not be able to be removed by the president.

Now, the special counsel investigates crimes. If he doesn’t find any, this entire investigation could end in nothing. Also, there’s a chance that this deflates the ongoing news about Russia, since the investigation will take place behind closed doors, and Republicans can now say “hey, there’s an investigation going on, let it take its course.”

Having said that, this is still huge news overall, and bad news for Donald Trump. To date, most of the news about Russia has been coming from the media, not from the various investigations (FBI, Senate, House). So, it’s not clear that the appointment of a special counsel will stop the bad news from coming.

All in all, this is great news for anyone concerned about whether we’d get to the bottom of what happened with the election, and what role Trump and company had if any.

All of this is just a diversion. The real problems include ending racism, wars of aggression and attacks on working people.

The Democrats claim that Republicans are venal, corrupt, racsit, mad dog warmongers and anti-union pigs.

They’re right. All the special prosecutors, investigations and the rest won’t change that becasue the twin parties of racism, war and attacks on the standard of living of working people can’t be changed or reformed.

Unfortunately, he’s not as “independent” as we’d like him to be. The POTUS can still fire him as well. But if he does the Republicans will not be able to ignore his obstructions anymore and will have to file Articles of Impeachment or lose all of their credibility. (if they haven’t lost them already)

    Yup. Yertle the Turtle too.

Yes. Paul “Ayn Rand” Ryan, especially, but also Mitch “Yertle the Turtle” McConnell are so salivating to privatize Social Security and Medicare, and get rid of things like Medicaid, food stamps, any assistance for the poor, the disabled, our children, they can hardly keep from peeing themselves at the prospect, and that’s why they keep suppprting Trump.

Wondering what or who changed Rod’s mind on this. Hard to believe he grew brave.

  7. Demosthenes says:

Mueller is a superb choice. While nominally Republican, he’s resolutely nonpartisan, honest, thorough, and determined. He’s Trump’s worst nightmare.

  8. Badgerite says:

trump was bought off by money. The GOP and Ryan in particular were bought off by the prospect of power at home to destroy as much as possible real representative government. You know, the kind of government that encourages our citizens to vote and tries to protect that right. That kind of government. The kind that actually listens to and acts in the interests of its people. The kind that insists peaceful protesters at the Turkish embassy not be beaten up for a visiting potentate wannabe’s thugs. That kind.
Thing is, you cannot get in bed with Russian intelligence and not end up destroying America’s power in the world but also its ability to defend itself and its allies from terror threats and aggression. Israeli intelligence just got burned and a critical source of intelligence on ISIS plots disrupted because Paul Ryan and the GOP sold out the country for power. He referred to what was clearly an attempt by trump to obstruct justice as a “command decision”. He stands for nothing.

That’s a very interesting article, thanks for the link!

Ryan said Russia’s goal was to “turn Ukraine against itself.”
Groysman underlined Russia’s intentions, saying, “They’re just going to
roll right through us and go to the Baltics and everyone else,”
according to Ryan’s summary of the prime minister’s remarks in the

“Yes,” Rodgers said in agreement, noting that the
Russians were funding nongovernmental organizations across Europe as
part of a wider “propaganda war.”

“Maniacal,” Ryan said. “And guess, guess who’s the only one taking a strong stand up against it? We are.”

    Rodgers disagreed. “We’re not . . . we’re not . . . but, we’re not,” she said.

Given the ever-increasing admiration of Putin not just by Trump but by many Republicans, it's pretty laughable indeed that Republicans are the only ones taking a strong stand against Russia's actions in Ukraine… :/

  11. Badgerite says:

Burning an ally like Israel, I think, was the last straw. And doing it in the Oval Office no less.
And then acting as if that was OK. And all of this after firing Comey because he would not kill the Russia investigation. This guy is guilty as shit. In a dangerous world, a country like the United
States cannot afford to be run by a disloyal idiot as his family business.
America stands for something in the world. It is time that our political creatures acted as it that still mattered.

  12. brel1 says:

Wow. Just Wow! Didn’t really see that coming. Things may go faster than expected.

  13. Naja pallida says:

Even if he finds nothing, Trump has already publicly committed witness tampering and freely admitted to obstruction of justice. As long as the Republicans in Congress are cowering, it doesn’t matter.

  14. DrRandy says:

I think this is going to be comparable to the Archibald Cox situation – Trump can’t fire Mueller, but he can tell Sessions and/or Rosenstein to do it. They can either comply or resign, and he’ll just keep going down the DOJ chain of command until he finds someone to be the hatchet man.
