BREAKING: Shooter on the loose at US Army base in Fort Hood, Texas

UPDATE: NYT is saying 4 people were killed, 14 wounded.

There is an “active shooter” at the US Army base at Fort Hood, Texas, according to the Fort Hood Twitter feed.

Fort Hood is advising everyone on base to “shelter in place.”

CNN reports that sirens are going off on base.  The shooting is underway, and there isn’t much more information as to what’s going on – other than the shooter is still on the loose.

The local news reports that one person so far is confirmed dead:

Fort Hood had an earlier “shooter” incident in 2009, when Nidal Malik Hasan, a US Army major and psychiatris killed 13 people and injured 30 others.

There is a huge tragedy unfolding in the American military. Suicides by returning vets are reaching epidemic proportions. Widespread self destructive and sociopathic behaviors are becoming more common among soldiers serving in Afghanistan or who returned from there or Iraq. It’s a reaction to their being forced into situations where large numbers of civilians are murdered to protect the interests of American corporations to control energy and mineral resources.

The vast bulk of these soldiers, absent a draft, are working class men and women who thought they could make a little extra money in the military by joining Guard units or people who wanted a way out of the violence imposed by austerity, unemployment and poverty and underestimated the damage they’d face, in terms of terrible wounds and equally terrible PTSD, in the military. They made a terrible mistake.

Those are some of the same problems faced by returning Vietnam vets but forced redeployments in Iraq and now Afghanistan tend to be much longer in duration, if not in severity and as far as we know, the rates of suicides and PTSD are higher for today’s vets.

The resource wars of the US against Arab and muslims nations are clearly the result of the polices of Democrat and Republican politicians alike and they are responsible for the two genocides in Iraq and the mass murder of civilians in Libya, Egypt, Palestine, Yemen, Bahrain, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. They are all war criminals.

We should put some of our “exploration and development” subsidies to the oil companies toward development of renewable energy. Portugal has been steadily increasing its renewable energy resources and has hit 70% renewable energy a couple of times. Sweden could be using 100% renewable energy sources within 5-10 years, Australia a decade after that.

I mean, it’s not like there’s no sun or wind in the U.S.

But the Koch brothers don’t like the idea, being entrepreneurial job creators and all.

    Hysterical BS

None of the reputable news outlets are reporting anything about the religion of the shooter, Ivan Lopez, but the military official statement did say he was under treatment for PTSD.

  5. BeccaM says:

You did mean that in jest, right?

Because I’m hoping you realize the only reason the pipeline is being proposed to run all the way from Canada to the Texas gulf coast is so that tar sludge can be processed, put onto tankers, and shipped overseas.

If ANY of that pipeline’s sludge was intended for sale in the States, don’t you think they could’ve stopped in North Dakota and just built a refinery right there?

Different day, another stupid fuck with a gun.

Maybe we should approve the Keystone pipeline and stop buying oil from the Mid East altogether.

I read on another site that the shooter is a Muslim and is now dead. Are we really surprised that radical Muslims are attacking us? I have read articles on how the military has become radicalized with nationalist Christianity and how troops are writing anti Islamic things on their vehicles overseas and how commanders are saying crusade like things as well. This is very alarming. The Military is supposed to be secular and to be fighting for Freedom and the Principles of the Enlightenment. I don’t think these attacks would be happening if the stupid War in Iraq or the drone attacks were not happening. We would be done fighting over there except for the occasional special forces capturing terrorists or killing them. Blowing up wedding parties isn’t such a good idea, it is called blow back and only helps the Military Industrial Complex out.

If only the military personnel had greater access to weapons, this sort of thing wouldn’t happen.
