Jews in eastern Ukraine told to register with pro-Russian forces, or else

In the last few days, leaflets have been distributed around eastern Ukraine, by pro-Russian separatists carrying Russian flags, demanding that Jews register with pro-Russian forces, or face deportation.

The leaflets read as follows (translated from Russian):

“Dear citizens of Jewish nationality! Due to the fact that the leaders of the Jewish community in Ukraine supported Bendery junta in Kiev, and is hostile to Orthodox Donetsk republic and its citizens, Main Headquarters Donetsk republic ruled as follows: All citizens of Jewish nationality over 16 years, residing in the territory of a sovereign republic Donetsk need to before May 3, 2014 come to the Commissioner for Nationalities in the building of Donetsk Regional Administration, Office 514 for registration. The registration fee is U.S. $ 50. If you should have cash in the amount of U.S. $ 50 registration fee for passports to mark the religion, documents of family members, as well as documents of title to all real property owned by you and vehicles. In case of evasion from registering, perpetrators will be stripped of their citizenship and deported forcibly outside the country with confiscation of property. “

A copy of the leaflet was published by the Novosti Donbassa news service:

US Secretary of State John Kerry weighed in today: “Just in the last couple of days, notices were sent to Jews, indicating that they have to identify themselves as Jews. And obviously, the accompanying threat implied is [garbled] or suffer the consequences… In the year 2014, after all of the miles traveled in all the journey of history, this is not just intolerable, it’s grotesque. It is beyond unacceptable.”

Interestingly, the Russians have been trying to justify their invasion and annexation of Ukrainian Crimea, and their, some think, imminent invasion of the eastern Ukraine, in part by the claim that the Ukrainian government, and Maidan protesters, are controlled by Nazis.

In fact, the government, and protesters, do include members of the far-right, but this is a sadly common occurence in a number of European countries, including France, Greece and Sweden, among others.  Ukraine is no different.

Neo-Nazis regularly organize on Russian social media site

Now, a government that does condone the actions of neo-Nazis, and which refuses to arrest them for serial abductions of over 1,000 people, is the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as I’ve documented repeatedly.

Putin has tolerated for going on two years now a neo-Nazi ring with branches in at least 30 Russian cities, and which claims to have abducted and tortured nearly 1,500 young people, mostly gay – some as young as 13 years of age.  The neo-Nazis are virulently anti-Semitic, and admirers of Adolf Hitler, a man who cost the Russian 20 million lives during World War II.  Apparently, the Putin regime has gotten over the traditional Russian disgust at all things Nazi.

Because the neo-Nazis share Putin’s agenda of attacking minorities, including gays, blacks and jews, the Kremlin is fine with letting them continue their criminal enterprise, mostly on the social media site VKontakte (, controlled by Putin ally Alister Usmanov.  Usmanov’s other properties benefit from investments from the NYC and New York State pension funds, and the pension fund of the state of California, CalPERS.

NY state and NYC, in addition to the state of California, apparently have no problem investing in Putin-allied Russian oligarchs who run ventures used by neo-Nazis to plan the abductions of 13 year old gay children.

  2. Aladin says:

is a fake leaflets! On them the stamp of the Governor appointed by
Yatsenyuk and Turchynov! it’s funny))). Peaceful protesters in the East
of Ukraine will not use the print illegal government Yatsenyuk! These
leaflets distributed illegal Kiev-fascist government. In Kiev with the
help of U.S. and NATO came to power of radicals and fascists, who
overthrew the legally Elected government. The self-proclaimed Kyivan
government came to power through a bloody revolution, the seizure of
government buildings and killing of representatives of the legitimate
authority! Now the junta claims that their murders were legitimate, and
the fact that their citizens in Eastern Ukraine are protesting against
the fascists illegally. Yatsenyuk and Turchynov chairmen of the party of
the Nazis and not hide it! They want to kill all those who do not agree
    with their dictates including Jews.

Its nice To meet a educated fellow American here. so many ‘goyim’ are ignorant of the

  4. Mike says:

They also haven’t forgotten of the genocide carried out between 1932-1933 by Soviet jews Gengrich Yadoda, Lazar Kagnovich, & their mostly jewish NKVD henchmen which was responisible for deaths of as many as 9 MILLION people through starvation also known as the Holodomor.

I don’t understand a lot of the secular world’s historical anti-Semitic stance particularly when you look at all the areas that the Jewish people have contributed to the advancement of civilization as a whole. I also don’t understand how Neo-Nazi can be seen as far right when I don’t know of any right leaning thought process that believes in government control over everything.

  7. ComradeRutherford says:

“The EU has staged a coup.”

Riiiiight! The UE took over Crimea and the complicit new media is lying when they say that Putin did it… Sure…

  8. crossrammed302 says:

I don’t really believe this story is accurate. It has the ring of bias to it and the CIA can be involved. The powers that be want to start WWIII very badly….maybe because if they don’t, their plan will not come to fruition again. The EU has staged a coup. They will steal a country from it’s citizens and place them into servitude to the world banks. They are working on the same plan in America by corrupting our elections, bankrupting our country and treading on our Constitutional rights.

  9. 4th Turning says:

Also this month. Can we ever be reminded enough?

Yes. Well, as — I got a degree in History at Johns Hopkins University thousands of years ago, Diane. And I guess I am too much of an historian to totally ignore the, what might be called, extenuating circumstances, of what faced Mr. Roosevelt at the time. I mean, the arguments from our perspective now, and certainly as the descendents of people who were onboard the “St. Louis,” it is so frustrating that they were so close to landing in America and were turned away. There is another very frustrating aspect of all of this. President Bru of Cuba said he would allow the “St. Louis” passengers to land in Havana if he could be granted — if he would be given a sum of 500 dollars for every passenger.

It worked out to 453,00 dollars. The American Joint Jewish Distribution Committee sent an emissary, Lawrence Berenson, down to Cuba, and Mr. Berenson decided to horse trade with President Bru. President Bru wanted 453,000 dollars. Mr. Berenson said, we’ll give you 443,000 dollars. He wanted to save 10,000 dollars, and he thought, well I’ll enter into negotiations. President Bru was not, however, in any mood to negotiate and said, that’s it. If you’re not gonna pay me the 453,000 dollars, the “St. Louis” cannot land.

So, you know, yes, it would have been wonderful had Mr. Roosevelt allowed the ship to land. It also would have been wonderful had Mr. Berenson not tried to save 10,000 dollars, which worked out to like 11 dollars per person.

  10. 4th Turning says:

Thanks for looking this up. Have thought many times it should be included with every
putin related story. And this to remember… There are very many good folk who know
very well what is going on. I like to think we are with them in spirit and any other way
we are able to lend moral support. (They’ve looked into those same eyes and found
    him to be 100% untrustworthy.)

  11. Daily Beast reporter Anna Nemtsova went to the room on the flyer, and it was empty.

Some antisemitic asshole in the Ukraine (a description which covers a huge swath of that population) is just fucking with the rest of us.

  12. MG1 says:

From the Washington Post today April 17, 2014

While the content of the letter is obviously offensive, there are plenty of reasons to be a little cautious about this story, and groups like the Anti-Defamation League have been careful to add in news releases that they were “skeptical about the flier’s authenticity.”

It certainly seems possible that the flier was the work of pro-Russia separatists, working with or without the support or knowledge of Pushilin [chairman of Donetsk’s temporary government.] At this stage, however, it is also possible that the letter was written by someone seeking to discredit Pushilin and the separatist government, as reported.

  13. FLL says:

The Jolly Saga of Pavel Gubarev, Governor of Donetsk People’s Republic
                    (Heads up, neo-Nazi fans!)

As quax mentioned below, there are really no police authorities to speak of in much of Donetsk province right now. I doubt if the people distributing these flyers have the backing of any organized leadership in Donetsk, but then I don’t think there is any real organized leadership.

Much more interesting is who would be governor of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” if he weren’t in jail right now. Fellow readers, allow me to introduce Pavel Gubarev, who announced that he was governor of the Donetsk region when pro-Russian separatists seized control of the Regional Assembly building in Donetsk on March 3. He was arrested by Ukrainian authorities on March 6. It’s very clear that Pavel Gubarev has the backing of his fellow pro-Russian separatists because on March 16, a crowd of protesters stormed government buildings in Donetsk demanding his release. Why am I so curious about this would-be governor, you ask? Read on. Mr. Gubarev is a member in good standing of two organizations. The first is a communist party called the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine. There are certainly communist parties that compete in elections in Ukraine and elsewhere in Eastern Europe, albeit without much electoral success. So far, so good. But it gets better. Mr. Gubarev is also a member of the officially neo-Nazi Russian National Unity political party and paramilitary group. Below are three graphics. The one on the top is the official flag of Russian National Unity. The one in the middle is the Nazi swastika from the 1930s. The one on the bottom is the ancient swastika symbol used by people of ancient and prehistoric times, which generally represented the idea of the sun constantly spinning as it traversed the sky. As you can see, the difference is that the ancient symbol rests flat, whereas the Nazi symbol rests on one of its corners. The symbol of Mr. Gubarev’s Russian National Unity party is clearly the Nazi symbol, although they added cute little points to the corners, which make Mr. Gubarev and company too cute by half.

So our erstwhile Governor Gubarev and his separatist pals are content to hang out with the communist party or the neo-Nazi party, or perhaps both at the same time. And you wonder why they love Putin’s anti-gay propaganda law so much. Wonder no more. Communist and neo-Nazi homophobes, together at last. (Laughing my f*cking ass off.)

  14. Naja pallida says:

This smacks more of a pathetic attempt by someone to stir up more shit, rather than any kind of actual threat. The separatist groups that are taking buildings and causing trouble in eastern Ukraine seem to have no real coordinated goals or plans, nor even any serious organized leadership. But, personally, if I were Jewish and living in Ukraine right now, I’d definitely be considering getting the hell out. Even if they’re just being used as political bait, seemingly by both sides, nothing good can come of it.

  15. Zorba says:

  17. quax says:

One thing to consider is that East Ukraine has no police presence at this point, allowing for thugs to pull a fast one. To me this looks to be more about the money, piggy-backing on always latent Antisemitism. If anybody was justified to form a self-defense force at this point it’ll be the Jewish Ukrainians.

  18. heimaey says:

Not just eastern Europe. France is the most anti-Semitic country.

  19. heimaey says:

I’m not sure this is real.

  22. Sameboat1 says:

It is difficult to blame three men, when there are over 50,000 combat troops. (actually wearing their uniforms!), waiting on the Ukraine eastern border with Russia.

  23. MG1 says:

The International Business Times actually translated the Novosti Donbassa story.

Novosti Donbassa reported that the leaflet was distributed by “three unidentified men wearing balaclavas and carrying the flag of the Russian Federation” with the aim of causing a conflict, then “to blame the attack on separatists”.

The authenticity of the leaflet could not be independently verified.

This is obviously a false flag op by Brennan/Nuland, Inc. trying to make sure the rubes at home (like yourself, John) are fired up enough to back a war with Russia. Nothing like accusations of anti-semitism (which is, of course, rampant in the Svoboda and Right Secktor parties who the US used to execute it’s coup in Kiev) to get the US behind a war with Russia.

The propaganda and misinformation coming out of MSM is breathtaking. It is worse than the run up to the Iraq war.

Paul Craig Roberts, ex Assistant Treasury Secretary and previous editor of the Wall Street Journal had the following to say:

Washington overthrew the elected Ukraine government in order to orchestrate a crisis that would distract Russia from Washington’s adventures in Syria and Iran and in order to demonize Russia as an invader rebuilding an empire that is a danger to Europe. Washington will use this demonization in order to break-up growing economic relationships between Russia and Europe. The purpose of sanctions is not to punish Russia, but to break up economic relationships.

Washington’s strategy is audacious and brings risk of war. If the West had an independent media, Washington’s plan would fail. But instead of a media, the West has a Ministry of Propaganda. The New York Times has even found a replacement for Judith Miller. As you might have forgot or never known, Judith Miller was the New York Times reporter who filled the Times with Bush regime neoconservative lies about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Instead of examining and exposing the Bush regime’s false claims, the New York Times bolstered the regime’s case for war by using the newspaper’s credibility to advance the neoconservative war agenda.

The new Judith Miller is David M. Herszenhorn, with accomplices Andrew Roth, Noah Sneider, and Andrew Higgins.

    [. . .snip]

How much longer will dumbshit americans fall for the flag-waving deception?

  24. Sameboat1 says:

“I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul, a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country,” … “I wouldn’t have invited him to my ranch if I didn’t trust him.”
George W. Bush on Putin, 2001.

  25. Sameboat1 says:

And another Hitler rises, strutting little peacock and all. And no, I am not Jewish, but religion to me is irrelevant to the lives of millions of people. We have been here before, and by the time we reacted, WWII was upon us. This is not Iraq. This is a real and genuine threat.

  26. Sameboat1 says:

While Israel is perfectly capable of defeating any middle eastern aggression, I doubt it is equipped to dedicate its forces to an eastern Europe conflict. It probably will or already has offered safe harbor to Ukrainian Jews and possibly transport. Their assets are another thing. At some point they will undoubtedly be lucky to escape Putin with their lives.

  27. Sameboat1 says:

Time to put NATO into Ukraine, to stop this madness. It cannot be allowed to happen again.

  28. Zorba says:

    This is very scary, Becca.
Anti-Semitism is entirely too prevalent in Eastern Europe.
But unfortunately, we are not free of this ourselves.
Witness the recent white supremacist, rabidly anti-Semite gunman in the Kansas City suburbs, Frazier Glenn Cross, or whatever the hell his real name was.
I just do not understand, and will never understand, why anyone would hate others because of their religion, beliefs, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or anything else.
    People are just people.

  29. zerosumgame0005 says:

So where is Israel with this? Waiting for us to do their dirty work for them?

  30. SFExPat says:

I can spend as much time as anyone poring over the latest in marriage equality and other gay-alphabet-soup rights efforts, but this kind of re-creating history has got me the absolute creeps. WTF can we all do except make sure the whole world is watching (which apparently it wasn’t in various 20th century anti-Jewish policies and procedures like this)?

  31. matt227 says:

Eastern Europe has always been like this. It is the worst part of the world for Jews outside of the Middle East.

  32. BeccaM says:

    This is too f*cking familiar…

A ‘fee’ for being Jewish and being compelled to register with the government. Additionally being required to list all property of any significant value. I have little doubt Ukrainian Jews will soon be required to wear identifying badges or armbands as well, under threat of arrest, seizure of all the helpfully listed real assets, and summary deportation. But first there’ll be camps where Jews and other undesirables are ‘concentrated.’

It is worth remember that in the Soviet — and later, Russian — history books, they downplay the Holocaust, preferring to focus almost exclusively on atrocities committed against the Russian people by the invading Nazis. Rabid anti-Semitism found fertile ground in Russia a long time ago.
