Lindsey Graham celebrates Duck Dynasty’s flag desecration before State of the Union

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and GOP Congressman Thomas Massie celebrated the descration of the American flag today, only hours before President Obama’s annual State of the Union address.

Massie had a photo taken with Willie Robertson of the television show Duck Dynasty, which has recently been in the news as one of its stars is a raging homophobe.

Robertson will be attending the State of the Union address tonight as the guest of Louisiana (who else?) GOP Cong. Vance McAllister.  Robertson thought it would be a good idea to dress like a slob, wearing a wrinkled dress shirt pulled out of his pants and a bandana of the American flag, which technically should count as flag desecration.

Think I’m kidding? It also appears to be a clear violation of federal law – heck, the law even mentions handkerchiefs specifically.

Title 4 United States Code

§ 8. Respect for Flag

(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

Imagine if a Democrat had done this before George Bush’s State of the Union.

And guess who else helped Duck Dynasty desecrate the flag tonight?

For the record I’m not a homophobe. My father came out of the closet shortly after I was born. Even though I chose a much different “lifestyle”, I love and respect him, but, lol, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t glad that he waited.

  2. Skymoonwalker says:

I bet the Robertsons have an audit with their names on it. I bet if Willie was snuggled up with a male “friend” on an American flag blanket, it would be unconstitutional or “homophobic ” to call him out.
How far our country has fallen!

When I was in elementary school back in the 1940’s, it was unheard of to leave the flag up after dark or in the rain. We had to raise the flag every morning and take it down at the end of the school day. And if it started raining, we had to run out there in the rain and take down the flag.

I believe current flad code guidelines allow for the flag to remain up 24/7 as long as it it illuminated after dark.

One other difference between then and now is that it would have been considered unthinkable that anyone should dare to wear the flag as clothing! That would have been considered close to treason back then. O TEMPORA O MORES.

  4. Patriot says:

The author clearly has no idea what he is talking about. In 1989 the US Supreme Court ruled that flag desecration is protected by the First Amendment. I highly doubt that the Christian valuing duck dynasty fella had any negative conatations in mind towards the flag or this country by wearing that bandana.

    You liberal, America hating, faggot.

  5. Badgerite says:

Didn’t people that looked like that used to be called ‘hippies’?

  6. Katatat says:

If that is the law then it’s not the duck dynasty douche who should be prosecuted but every company in America that makes 4th of July disposable dinnerware, etc.

  7. FUFatherEisenman says:

Kind of like the time they wanted Abby Hoffmans head for wrapping a flag around his shoulders while praising Roy Rogers an American hero while wearing an American flag that had been sewn into a shirt. Republicans are all a bunch of hypocrites.

  8. Trevor Reid says:

Is that actually a flag or is it a red, white, and blue bandanna with stars and stripes? Wearing the latter is not flag desecration. I recall reading cases on this issue developing around the bicentennial years when it was popular to wear patriotic clothing and accessories. Weren’t these generally held not to be flags–much like the red, white, and blue bunting used at campaign rallies or the stars and stripe napkins used at countless Independence Day picnics?

And finally, if it were a flag, please remind us is violating the Flag Code a crime for civilians in the U.S. or is it just poor taste? I thought the code was advisory.

  9. jm2 says:

    they all ‘pretend’ they don’t…

  10. gratuitous says:

Oops, assuming facts not in evidence: Please provide support for your statement that Mr. Robertson is “a patriotic American.” Thank you.

  11. Silver_Witch says:

Wonder if it makes Senator Graham feel more “manly” to stand next to some one so masculine and stong (okay giggling surpressed).

On the other hand, I think anyone should be able to attend the POTUS’ speech and that those who have guest passes should be able to hand them out to anyone they want.

To me those who attend as guests (not those “required” to attend because they are a Senator or House Member are saying “Hey I support this President, I like him and/or I think he is kinda cute.”

So I am taking this as the Duck Dynasty family standing strong with the President and his belief that the LGBT and women should have the same rights the rest of america has. Yeah, that’s it!

  12. Mike_in_the_Tundra says:

Maybe those right-wingers were a bit upset that they found the sight of his butt to be a bit arousing.

  13. Yalma Cuder-Zicci says:

And it’s usually the same people who wear a big cross around their necks while acting as un-Christlike as possible.

  14. olandp says:

You mean someone doesn’t. Jon Stewart gets laughs just at the mention of Miss Lindsey.

  15. olandp says:

It seems Miss Lindsey likes ’em big and hairy.

  16. Strepsi says:

I’m old enough to remember that these same Reaganite religious-right went after that Godless communist Bruce Springsteen in 1984 for EXACTLY this, and he wasn’t even wearing the flag! According to these wingnuts he was pissing on it.

  17. goulo says:

In a supposedly free land, I’d say that it’s actually very fortunate and appropriate that there are not penalties for violating a Flag Code.

  18. Person says:

How dare a patriotic American wear a headband with an American flag design on it. He should be imprisoned for at least 1000 years!

  19. benb says:

What’s with Graham? That grimace—I’ve seen it before. Willie snake his finger into Lindsey?

  20. liberalenigma says:

Fake boy is in his costume. Wrapped in the flag and carrying a…

  22. If it had been a Democrat at Bush’s SOTU we’d be hearing from Breitbart/Malkin/NRO, “Stop them from flag-raping us again!!!1! Benghazi!!1!”

  23. cole3244 says:

when your patriotism is confined to wearing a flag, a bumper sticker, cheap talk, or attacking someone else right to the american dream that’s the definition of a chicken hawk.

  24. karmanot says:

  25. PeteWa says:

a fake heterosexual celebrating fake patriotism with a fake redneck… sounds like the GOP.

  26. jm2 says:

wouldn’t they be surprised if they knew the real Miss Lindsey?

  27. lilyannerose says:

    Silly people!

  28. Anonymous says:

Nah, they’d miss the free speech in Russia. You know, the right they say they don’t have here. I’d love to see them in a “socialist” country – no wonder Europeans shake their heads at us! While we were going to Walmart they were surviving fascists.

  29. disqus_tu7SEHpgGp says:

Willie Robinson with, Huckleberry Closetcase? OMG. Does Willie know yet?

  30. Anonymous says:

    1. Flag desecration is only justifiable if it’s in protest to liberals
    2. This happened in Russia and the people who did it got beat up. Why all the whining about how America “isn’t a free country”?
    3. Isn’t this illegal? Oh wait, they’re busy arresting liberals for “blocking traffic” whenever they’re protesting something relevant.

Fascism will arrive with a Bible being misquoted and a flag pulled out of his pants.

  31. Houndentenor says:

No it does not. A couple of years ago I had a commute on a stretch of interstate where there were businesses one after the other flying soiled, ripped, ragged flags. My inner boy scout (from decades ago) winced every time. That’s not patriotic. Nor is a headband. I mean really.

  32. Houndentenor says:

Silly John. It’s okay when right-wingers desecrate the American flag because reasons.

  33. Cosmo Tupper says:

Just shows the lengths that Graham (et al) will go to while undermining patriotism. If they don’t like our great democracy, they can get the eff out. Perhaps the USSR would be more appealing to their ilk!

  34. emjayay says:

It’s pretty amazing that some politician thinks (and in terms of his electorate, is no doubt right) that it’s a great idea to give out a coveted invite to a very public nationally televised political event to a guy pretending to be a redneck to make money off of gullible actual rednecks. Instead of the usual, you know, the usual war heroes and people who overcame some adversity and people who made some sacrifices to make an actual contribution to society.

But then it was also amazing several years ago when an actual vice president thought the right place to go for exclusive interviews was the radio show of a fat garbage spewing perveyer of trash in the pursuit of making millions riling up the ignorant.

  35. Oh the others won’t, which is why its our job to give Graham and Massie as much heartburn as they deserve, and as much as the GOP would have given us had the duck been on the other foot. Sometimes the best response is to take their beautiful perfect photo opp and blow it up in their face.

  36. Lawerence Collins says:

Ms Graham is trying to prove how butch she is before all the demonic, soulless sociopathic, Rethuglican zombie sheeple! I’m shocked they didn’t go shoot something!

  37. Jim Olson says:

Unfortunately, the US Flag Code does not provide penalties for violations.

  38. Drew2u says:

Can we all agree to ignore this distraction-of-a-tactic by Ms. Lindsey of inviting her gaggle of clucking hens to the party? Certainly the news programs, being gossip shows now, will be all over it.
