Jon Stewart on the Great Benghazi Cover-Up (video)

Jon Stewart covers the Republican hearings on Benghazi – nine to date – and how none of them have yet to produce a smoking gun.

What’s more, Stewart notes the outrageous GOP hyperbole about Benghazi when, during the Bush administration, there were 54 attacks on diplomatic targets, that killed 13 Americans, yet garnered only 3 hearings on embassy security, and zero outrage on Fox.

Probably the best part is when Stewart shows clips of all sorts of Fox commentators – he calls them “the denizens of bullsh*t mountain” – talking about “if” Obama did this and “if” Obama did that, it would be a HUGE story.  Of course, they’re all hypotheticals and there’s no proof that any of it is true.

Though the closing of the second video, around 4:15 into the video, is really good too. Definitely worth a watch.

  2. zorbear says:

If we can’t do that now, why would anyone think we’d be able to do that then?

  3. redtop says:

The sworn duty of any POTUS is to do whatever in his or her power to protect U.S. citizens serving this country domestically or abroad.
It appears that fundamental sworn obligation was abandoned by our current POTUS.
    Draw your own conclusions.

  4. Dave Kraut says:

Exactly.. Now that ABC, CS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, the New York Times, Washington Post, are reporting the cover up, it should get very interesting.

  5. BeccaM says:

And now you’re gas-lighting. Shoo, troll.

  6. operaclassica says:

    No go Will737,

    just tell the truth.
Keep it simple and tell the truth.

  7. Dan Hydar says:

“You just don’t like your outrageous hypocrisy being exposed.” OK, quote “operaclassica” saying anything about Bush tat would indicate hypocrisy. Otherwise, you’re just playing make believe to avoid talking about the issue. Your ad hominem argument gets nobody anywhere.

  8. Dan Hydar says:

It’s cute that you’re much more comfortable vilifying The Other instead of dealing with the **current** mess that Obama’s created.

  9. Dan Hydar says:

“Republican voters are just insane over this” It would seem much more “insane” to ignore the issue.

” Their own politicians cut the diplomatic security budgets like crazy”
OK – quote the percent “cut” … and demonstrate that it cause Obama’s failure to protect the ambassador.

  10. Dan Hydar says:

Wow…. the best Jon Stewart can do these days is to repeat the red herring “what about other attacks on embassies”? Sad.

For those who haven’t thought these things through : teh issue isn’t that the mebassy was attacked – it’s that :

    (1) It was obvious that 9/11 is a date for likely attacks in the Islamic world
    (2) A sitting ambassador was begging for help before and during the attack.
    (3) Help was denied.
    (4) The administration pedalled stories they knew to be false since then.

  11. Will737 says:

You just don’t like your outrageous hypocracy being exposed. Well you may whine all you wish, but that is really what it is about.
You want to hold this administration to some weird standard of perfection, when those you voted for can’t even travel to Europe because they will be arrested as the War Criminals they are.

  12. Will737 says:

Republican voters are just insane over this. Their own politicians cut the diplomatic security budgets like crazy. And they did this at a time when many of our actual Embassies are not adequately secured. Do they expect that the State Department can magically know in advance which temporary mission [not even an embassy] will be attacked? Republican lawmakers are engaged in a coverup of what they did to diplomatic security. If it wasn’t the temporary mission in Benghazi, it would have been somewhere else. Would they rather it have been Tripoli? Would they rather lose dozens than to lose four? They just want to cover up their blame in all of this. by pretending that it’s somebody else’s fault.

  13. thejames2020 says:

Hey dummy, yes that’s YOU Stuart, It’s the LIES and COVER UP…. You know Stuart, the lies and cover up that brought down Nixon.. Except that with NIxon, Republicans marched over and asked him to step down. Democrats like their liars, cheaters and corruption…..

BTW, Nixon had more balls and he did step down.. Obama/Hillary??? Cowards….

Hillary, it’ makes a big difference when 4 Americans our counting on you for their lives and then you fail them and then you lie and then you attempt to cover up….

  14. operaclassica says:

You did it again. You write “about the 13 ‘Benghazis’ that happened during George W Bush’s watch” and then you mention something else to defend your point. Take a course in clear thinking. It might help.

  15. BeccaM says:

Didn’t they? What about the lies to start the Iraq war?

  16. operaclassica says:

No one tried to lie about them.

  17. operaclassica says:

It is amazing that all you can do is point to the mistakes of others to justify your own mistakes. What an awful way to attempt to get your own way.

  18. BeccaM says:

It’s hilarious isn’t it, how these trolls come by with out even the vaguest sense of how to write in grammatically correct and comprehensible English?

  19. BeccaM says:

As opposed to the thousands of Americans dead due to Dubya’s Iraq fiasco? How come you people never ask for investigations into that, and the war crimes that directly resulted from the decision to institute torture as an official American detention policy?

  20. CottonBlimp says:

We might be able to elect better Democrats, but that might be optimistic.

  21. CottonBlimp says:

When the event actually happened, he DID attack Obama and Sec. Clinton for providing confusing, contradictory, and mistaken accounts of what happened.

Whatever genuine criticism there was to make about Benghazi has been lost in a sea of pompous, theatrical grandstanding by political hypocrites.

  22. Melka says:

It could have been funny if instead of concentrating his Benghazi piece on Fox News, Stewart would tear apart the President`s and Sec. Clinton`s version of why Ambassodor Stevens and otheres were killed. It would also be much more appropiate.
It would also be advisable if Stewart at least read the transcript of Hicks`s testimony.
I would not compare the lies Obama and his administration gave us about Benghazi to the Watergate, though both he and Nixon wanted to win the next election, no one died at the Watergate fiasco.

  23. zorbear says:

the only problem is: if we get rid of all the Republicans, then we’re stuck with all those Democrats who won’t represent us either.

I’d be willing to bet that if the Senate was 100% Demon-crat, we still couldn’t get a bill through…

  24. nicho says:

    English translation, please.

  25. I have no idea. Who is Jon Steward?

  26. msherry says:

What would Jon Steward say if the Bush administration blame a video for attacks against Americans?

  27. BeccaM says:

How about the 13 ‘Benghazis’ that happened during George W Bush’s watch? Why weren’t there any witch-hunt hearings then?

January 22, 2002. Calcutta, India. Gunmen associated with Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami attack the U.S. Consulate. Five people are killed.

June 14, 2002. Karachi, Pakistan. Suicide bomber connected with al-Qaida attacks the U.S. Consulate, killing 12 and injuring 51.

October 12, 2002. Denpasar, Indonesia. U.S. diplomatic offices bombed as part of a string of “Bali Bombings.” No fatalities.

February 28, 2003. Islamabad, Pakistan. Several gunmen fire upon the U.S. Embassy. Two people are killed.

May 12, 2003. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Armed al-Qaida terrorists storm the diplomatic compound killing 36 people including nine Americans. The assailants committed suicide by detonating a truck bomb.

July 30, 2004. Tashkent, Uzbekistan. A suicide bomber from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan attacks the U.S. Embassy, killing two people.

December 6, 2004. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Al-Qaida terrorists storm the U.S. Consulate and occupy the perimeter wall. Nine people are killed.

March 2, 2006. Karachi, Pakistan again. Suicide bomber attacks the U.S. Consulate killing four people, including U.S. diplomat David Foy who was directly targeted by the attackers. (I wonder if Lindsey Graham or Fox News would even recognize the name “David Foy.” This is the third Karachi terrorist attack in four years on what’s considered American soil.)

September 12, 2006. Damascus, Syria. Four armed gunmen shouting “Allahu akbar” storm the U.S. Embassy using grenades, automatic weapons, a car bomb and a truck bomb. Four people are killed, 13 are wounded.

January 12, 2007. Athens, Greece. Members of a Greek terrorist group called the Revolutionary Struggle fire a rocket-propelled grenade at the U.S. Embassy. No fatalities.

March 18, 2008. Sana’a, Yemen. Members of the al-Qaida-linked Islamic Jihad of Yemen fire a mortar at the U.S. Embassy. The shot misses the embassy, but hits nearby school killing two.

July 9, 2008. Istanbul, Turkey. Four armed terrorists attack the U.S. Consulate. Six people are killed.

September 17, 2008. Sana’a, Yemen. Terrorists dressed as military officials attack the U.S. Embassy with an arsenal of weapons including RPGs and detonate two car bombs. Sixteen people are killed, including an American student and her husband (they had been married for three weeks when the attack occurred). This is the second attack on this embassy in seven months.

Note: This list doesn’t include the numerous and often fatal attacks on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad Iraq during the war — a war whose origins in lies and stovepiped phony intelligence has yet to be fully exposed, never mind prosecuted as it deserves.

  28. Paul Bauccio says:

Jon can be funny, but nothing is funny about a man put in prison for a bullshit story about a video so Obama and Hillary can cover their asses. Four Americans were killed Jon get your Liberal head out of your ass.

  29. nicho says:

This Benghazi talk would end if all the Republicans would have a shred of decency and resign. I hope they do, because they’re worse than awful.

  30. BeccaM says:

Oh, and meanwhile, House Republicans are still trying to cut the State Department’s security budget.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think they were deliberately trying to manufacture more embassy security crises.

  31. BeccaM says:

    Benghazi = Whitewater.

Or, a trumped-up perpetual motion investigatory sleaze-machine that exists solely for the purpose of filling empty news cycles with phony controversy and to give Red state conservatives a topic they can handily use to distract their deliberately ill-informed and uninformed regressive base.

Or, “Nobody gives a flying rat’s ass about the President’s birth certificate anymore, so let’s find some other way to jack with his Administration.”

What’s especially helpful to the GOPers with this one is they get lots of camera time to chin-stroke and say crap like, “We just want to get at the truth” and “The Administration is stonewalling us” and “They refuse to answer our questions” — even though it’s all total BS. We already know what happened. Partially, an intelligence lapse/failure. And partially because the Congressional Republicans cut the State Dept security budget.

  32. karmanot says:

Typically the morons will use a false non issue to attempt against Hillary and it will unfortunately fail.

  33. guest1 says:

This Benghazi talk would end if Hillary promised not to run for reelection, it’s all about taking her down early, which I hope works cause shes awful
