Jon Stewart on how Fox hates the US Constitution, unless it’s about guns

Jon Stewart’s take on how Fox News hates the US Constitution, unless it’s about guns. This one is particularly well-done.

“Yes, it turns out there’s only one amendment in our Constitution’s pantheon that is exempt from statistical analysis or emotional freak-out-itude, and it is the Second.  So God help us if the Muslims ever decide to form a well-regulated militia, we’ll have no way to stop them.”

Fox News can’t make up its mind about the US Constitution. Much like the Republicans they routinely shill for, Fox’s hosts always talks about how much they love the Constitution, but then when a problem arises, they hate it and are ready to dump it all.  They particularly hate the Constitution when the word “terrorism” comes up.  God forbid someone presumes innocent before guilty should get a fair trial in America. What would the Framers think?

If the subject moves to guns, however, their hatred of the Constitution immediately dissipates,  and there’s nothing more important than – what? – defending the Constitution.  (Unless you’re talking about guns in the hands of dark-skinned foreign Muslims – there’s a constitutional exception for that one.)

Here’s Jon Stewart’s take:

An American in Paris, France. BA in History & Political Science from Ohio State. Provided consulting services to US software startups, launching new business overseas that have both IPO’d and sold to well-known global software companies. Currently launching a new cloud-based startup. Full bio here.

  1. “I get the feeling the left only supports gay marriage to spite the social conservatives.”
Superior intellect at work. Watch out everybody!

  2. Deven W says:

No, the left would rub it in their faces, then immediately focus on some other issue like partial birth abortions.

  3. samizdat says:

Mike Gravel is eccentric, at worst, not delusional, or a fraud, like the Paul’s.

Are you just trolling or insulting now? Surely you don’t really believe that.

Suppose that social conservatives started strongly supporting same-sex marriage. Do you REALLY believe that, instead of being happy, the left would respond by opposing same-sex marriage, in order to spite the social conservatives?

  5. how on earth has the Republican party moved to the Left? Do you have any solid examples to back that up that aren’t anomalous individual examples?

  6. Deven W says:

I’d rather bludgeon you with my superior intellect. I don’t need style. :)

  7. Dear boy, you haven’t the feel for this at all. Use all your voices. If you’re going to be a successful pet troll you can’t just run straight to sneering “typical liberal” at the first response. That’s blowing your load early, don’t you see that? Learn to string us along a bit. It’s better style.

You’re probably correct, the people in our country have moved right since Obama has come into office, but he still pushes a very far left agenda on everyone. I think you see a country that is more liberal on social issues of freedom, but more conservative fiscally. (which I believe is the natural human condition, and vibes very well with our founding documents)

The problem isn’t with the people of this country, its with the two parties. They have both moved to the left since Bush came into office.

And this is where much of the frustration is coming from. This is why we can’t all get along. Right now, we have a leader completely out of touch with half of Americans, and mostly out of touch with 25% of Americans. The other 25%, the “liberals” (which is a disservice to the term, really) cheer and praise Obama, and boy are they loud, especially when most of MSM fits into the 25% category.

As far as communism, perhaps harsh, but I think you should look into the history of most of the people in power in the Democratic party. Look at their actions, not their words. Every agenda they push is very socialistic in nature. Obamacare, this gun control farce, two hallmarks of socialist Europe (which is mostly a racist, angry poo hole btw, not sure why so many Americans romanticize it)

  9. mark_in_toronto says:

Substitute ‘Constitution’ for ‘Bible’ and the same paradox applies.

Interesting that these two “holy documents” are conveniently interpreted to make a point that involves discrimination and hypocrisy.

  10. you make it sound like the country has moved to the Left. I’d say the country has been steadily moving to the Right for a while, especially since Obama was elected. The Center isn’t what it used to be and there aren’t any communists, unless your definition of communism includes wanting to provide even the most minimal social safety net.

  11. big man g says:

mike gravel is the democrat version of Ron Paul.

  12. Deven W says:

I’m not even sure what you’re talking about. Is forgetting to put an “ic” at the end some new form of bigotry I’m not aware of?

By the way, typical liberal, ignore the substance of the argument and beat down the straw man. You two are intellectual heavyweights, for sure.

  13. Deven W says:

Please look up the Verona papers.

  14. nicho says:

No, no, no. They can’t change anything in the talking points. They get points off for that. In Teabagger world, it’s like reciting your catechism. Change one word and you’re a heretic.

  15. “Democrat Party”? A bit obvious. Work on that.

  16. nicho says:

The Teabaggers have been out in force since the Boston bombing. Apparently, Teabaggers love terrorists and hate cops — but that’s what comes from lying on your back and letting the Koch Brothers dangle their balls in your mouth.

  17. nicho says:

Well, you’ve got the Teabagger rant down pat.

The Democrat Party doesn’t have any Rand Pauls, Ron Pauls, or Ted Cruzs

And that’s one huge point in their favor. They’ve got enough problems without certifiable lunatics.

  18. karmanot says:

You did say ‘Communists’. OMG, look under your bed, or call Senator McCarthy.

  19. Deven W says:

Meh, Democrats and Republicans both hate the constitution. I think Stewart is pretty funny, but he isn’t doing anyone a service by only portraying half of the story. Almost every argument he makes could be placed upon the democrats.

I also heard a pretty great point. If Police SWAT teams are able to do unconstitutional searches of people’s homes, pull them out at gun point in their pajamas, and shut down an entire city in the search for one man, why is our government treating him better than the rest of our citizens in regards to the constitution?

  20. NorthAlabama says:

chris, not trying to be picky, but shouldn’t the headline read “fox loves (not hates) the us constitution unless it’s about terrorists (not guns)”?

either way, the bit points out great inconsistencies and blatant hypocrisy from fox.
