Elvis Costello – Red Shoes

Elvis Costello was quite a young pup in this video which was probably either 1977 or 1978.

The BBC announcer (I’m assuming it’s from Top of the Pops) has quite the 70s look going on, including the annoyingly fake voice. I only thought they had those voices on American radio but no, somehow people in the media thought it sounded cool or something back in the day.

An American in Paris, France. BA in History & Political Science from Ohio State. Provided consulting services to US software startups, launching new business overseas that have both IPO’d and sold to well-known global software companies. Currently launching a new cloud-based startup. Full bio here.

TOTP jock is Tony Blackburn, in his 30s in the clip. Tony broadcast on the pirate stations Radio(s) Caroline and London in the 1960s and he was the first disc jockey to broadcast on the Beebs Radio 1 in 1967. 70 now and he is still working!

What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding?

He was, what we used to call in radio “a puker”. It’s the same sound you make when you’re puking, but you’re talking instead.

I think of that as a “radio” voice, one of the reasons I stopped listening to the radio back in the day.
