Romney/Ryan voters try to destroy “photo op” soup kitchen – Dems stop them

Reminiscent of the time Republicans tried to destroy a pizza joint where President Obama got a bear hug from its GOP owner, Republicans have spent the last week harassing, and trying to destroy, a soup kitchen where Paul Ryan held a now-infamous photo opp.

Huff Post’s Jason Cherkis reports:

Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, confirmed that donors have begun an exodus in protest over Ryan’s embarrassment. The monetary losses have been big. “It appears to be a substantial amount,” Antal said. “You can rest assured there has been a substantial backlash.”

Ryan supporters have now targeted Antal and his soup kitchen, Antal said, including making hundreds of angry phone calls. Some members of Antal’s volunteer staff have had to endure the barrage as well, he said. “The sad part is a lot of [the callers] want to hide behind anonymity,” he said, adding that if someone leaves their name and number he has tried to return their call. In addition to phone calls, people have posted a few choice words on the charity’s Facebook wall, including statements like “I hope you lose your tax [sic] emempt status,” Anyone who is thinking about donations to you should think twice” and “Shame on you Brian Antal!”

Thankfully, per Huff Post Hill, Democrats have risen to the challenge and saved the soup kitchen that Romney/Ryan supporters tried to put out of business.

“The soup kitchen facing a donor backlash in the wake of Paul Ryan’s embarrassing photo op has been rescued by the internet. The day after HuffPost broke the kitchen’s sad news, Corey Snow of Olympia Washington, organized an online fundraising drive on the charity’s behalf. In about 30 hours, Snow had raised $10,000. By Monday morning, donations had reached more than $12,600. Snow said that he was upset that the most needy would become pawns in presidential politics.‘People are hungry regardless of whether you vote Democrat or Republican,’ he said. ‘I thought it was not cool that they were pulling donations.’ Snow, who has talked with the charity’s director, plans on keeping the campaign going long past the election. He plans on turning in his donations to the soup kitchen by mid December. ‘The election will still be over but people will still be hungry,’ he said. The campaign site link is There is also a direct donation site set up by the Mahoning County Society of Saint Vincent de Paul at, and of course the national site at

It’s really kind of astounding, and speaks volumes to what the Republican party has become,

that Romney/Ryan supporters would try to destroy a soup kitchen that feeds the poor and the homeless.

The US Council of Catholic Bishops called out Paul Ryan loud and clear on his economic policies that would, “decimate the most needy”, as did the Jesuits at Georgetown University.  Catholic Nuns on the Bus toured the country raising support for Obamacare.  Ryan is a poser.

  2. My question is this? How do they know if those involved are Rep or Dem.  This reads like a hit piece on the Reps. There is not one thing in this story that says proof positive that it is/was any one group. So I take this as a HIT PIECE. Why would the Republicans want to destroy a place that gave them a boost? Read and think a little before you get you panties in a bunch here. Liberals will try and do anything to make the other guy look bad.
For the guys out here still wanting a third party. You are only voting for Obama when you Vote for  who ever it is that nobody ever heard of. Who is Gary Johnson?
     Time to VOTE for AMERICA.

These people will probably politicize the so called ‘faith based initiatives’ even more so than in the Bush years, so that churches that do any charitable work without copelling their benificiaries to vote Republican will have their initiative funding cut off… AND be reported to the IRS as an alleged political organization!

  4. Cris0000 says:

Exactly my point. No where in IndieGoGo fundraising pages does it say that the fund raising is being done by Democrats. The IndieGoGo campaign even states, “Give to the Saint Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen of Youngstown Ohio to show that real charity is above politics!”

Yet this article makes it about politics.

Headline: “Romney/Ryan voters try to destroy “photo op” soup kitchen – Dems stop them.”

Text in the article: “Thankfully, per Huff Post Hill, Democrats have risen to the challenge and saved the soup kitchen that Romney/Ryan supporters tried to put out of business.”

It doesn’t say anything about Democrats donating money, just that the person who started the money drive for the soup kitchen read the huffington posts reporting.  No where did it say he was a democrat… and in fact, if you go to the page where they are raising money, you’ll see that the group raising the cash is apolitical and endorses no political party or candidate.

You libertarians are so cute! When are you going to have your next bake sale, I’m gonna buy two rice crispy treats.

    I agree!!

  8. LiveFree says:

GARY JOHNSON!!!  The only party that hasn’t been bought and paid for by foreign or corporate interests?? LIBERTARIAN!!! Cast a vote for Freedom, and you won’t be voting for the “lesser of two evils.”  :)

Well, I suppose if you think the entire world is made up of only Republicans and Democrats and see every action as having to have a political motivation, it wouldn’t make sense.

I am neither R or D, and I gave money in order to help people who had their funding pulled due to politics. I didn’t give money as a means of continuing the politicizing.

  10. With Romney/Ryan…nothing is “wrong”, it is ALL, a means to an end.Romney will do and say ANYTHING, to get into the President’s chair…It’s when he is in, that people will find the true Romney.. a Plutocrat… that believes the wealthy should rule…He will protect them at all costs.

It takes more than being “slick”, to guide a nation…
