Hey Donald Trump Jr: It’s the Russians stupid!

Yet another huge blockbuster story last night from the New York Times. We knew that Donald Trump Jr., Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort met with a Russian attorney last summer in the hopes of receiving damaging information about Hillary Clinton. What we did not know is that Trump Jr. was notified in advance of the meeting that the damaging information about Hillary was coming from the Russian government, and that the meeting was with a “Russian government attorney.” Yet Trump still went ahead with the meeting.

And we know the NYT story is true because Donald Trump Jr. released the email chain this morning, showing that he was notified in advance that the damaging information was coming from the Russian government.

The NYT reports in a follow-on story that Don Jr. responded in minutes:  “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”

Here are the emails Donald Trump Jr. released on Twitter this morning. The emails confirm that Trump Jr. was notified in advance that the meeting was about the Russian government helping Trump win the election by giving his son incriminating information about Hillary:

“The crown prosecutor of Russia met with his father Aras this morning and in their meeting offered to prove the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father. This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.”

This is the email that Trump Jr. reportedly responded: “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”

Here are some of the emails released by Donald Trump Jr. himself:

And here’s the portion of the email Trump Jr. shared in which he’s notified that the meeting is with a “Russian government lawyer”:

Why this matters:

1. The Trump campaign repeatedly denied having any meetings with Russians during the campaign. Now we know that there were lots of meetings, including Donald Trump’s own son, along with son-in-law Jared Kushner and campaign manager Paul Manafort. Why did this try to hide these meetings?

2. Maybe now we know why they’d lied about these meetings. Trump’s own son appears to be confirming that the Trump campaign, in its battle to win the election and beat Hillary Clinton, was willing to knowingly take help from the Russian government. It’s just unthinkable.

3. This also means that Donald Trump Sr’s repeated denials of the fact that Russia wanted him to win, and that Russia was trying to help him win, were lies. Trump’s own son was notified a year ago that Russia wanted Trump to win, and was willing to help. It’s difficult to believe that Junior never mentioned any of this to dear old dad.

4. No one who attended this meeting — Don Jr., Kushner, or Manafort — contacted the FBI about this?

5. Mike Pence is either a liar or woefully out of touch. Here’s a video of Pence from this past January doing his best Father Knows Best “aw shucks” denial of any meetings with Russians:

I think Don Jr. is in serious trouble. And were this a normal administration, and a normal political atmosphere, and a normal Congress, Donald Trump Sr.’s presidency would be in serious jeopardy. But these are not normal times. In the end, Donald Trump will be forded to pardon his son, unless New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman can find any state laws that were broken, as presidential pardons only cover federal law.

And finally, who is leaking all of this? Who would have Donald Trump Jr.’s email chain, and who would want to leak it in order to hurt him? It sure looks like someone close to the Trump family and campaign who has a grudge about Don Jr.

I know I shouldn’t be surprised by anything Team Trump does at this point, but I’m simply blown away.

Perhaps the GOP would like China, France or Germany to help the Democrats next election cycle. Surely it will be a nothing burger.

Unless they’re being the sacrificial lamb for someone else.

What’s going to be really interesting is what Mueller and his team dig up that Trump or Junior aren’t tweeting about.

This is likely just the tip of a very large iceberg.

“is in big, big trouble” unfortunately is less certain than “should be in big, big trouble” and “would be in big, big trouble if the rest of the government were less dysfunctional/obsequious/corrupt, and more honest”… :/

But we will see – I hope you are right!

I guess we will be listening to innuendo about the Russians for the next three years. It’s how the liberal elite avoid discussing working class issues, the loss of our jobs to cheap immigrant labor, and terrorist attacks on innocent people. College educated liberals have always treated working people with scorn. Their attitude towards us now is hard core contempt.
By ignoring the issues, democrats lost the election. But don’t expect the elite to face reality. It’s more useful to dwell on non-issues and smug self-satisfaction.

I do realize that this is an old email during the election but these tactics were employed at that time as well,As far fetched as the” pizza thing” was it did destroy Clinton’s chances. To this day including myself people will not support” pedo” of any sort. You can simply go to Youtube and there are some very damaging things that have not been explained.frump loves to play games with people’s heads.
Didn’t he draw attention to what was in the emails? The damn media played their parts as well, the tactic keep talking about the emails but not mention what they had in them, very clever! In 2018 we have 23 Dems up for re-election time to start getting some real effort going on disproving these accusations, not just ignoring them.I do hope that this current news does take these roaches all down.but just saying ,these roaches play dirty.

Be very careful,we are playing a bad reality show complete with twists and turns. This seems like other bait and switch hits. The new trick is to accuse any Dem or progressive of whatever crime without any real backup info. in this case” Clinton colluded with the Russians or tried to do so”.which is why frump wanted info LOL ,which would make him a hero in the eyes of the sheeple.
This tactic has worked well with the Seattle mayor and the whole pedo stuff in general. Why does it work? because pedo is a major red flag to everyone you do not harm children period.like it or not this thing with the little DC pizza shop has not gone away. I stlill think in this case those accused need to get up and say this is not who they are,the only one I know of is Murry.Clinton,Obama Podesta Alafantis have not.Amazing no real mention of epsten living near Mara lego (spelling on purpose)

  • BTW, Jared is in big, big trouble now, given he was CC’d on those emails and confirmed at the meeting. The meeting he tried to hide from the FBI and on his security clearance forms.

The proposed explanation his omission was an innocent mistake was just destroyed.

  • And here we thought some prosecutor was going to have to prove Trump and his campaign were colluding with the Russian government. Junior comes right out and admits it — and PROVIDES DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE.

Regarding pardons…yeah, probably coming at some point, but remember always Donald’s psychology: A pardon is an admission of guilt. He’s still locked in the mindset of “I did nothing wrong, nobody near me ever did anything wrong, do not ever admit failure or responsibility..”

The other problem is the instant a pardon is granted, the person thus pardoned can no longer invoke the 5th Amendment regarding the matter. Since they can’t be prosecuted on the original crime, there’s no self-incrimination and thus testimony can be compelled after that. But then subsequent charges of obstruction and perjury then become entirely possible.

Uday/Freddo is a chip off the old block.

  • The entire thing is just beyond belief. Had junior not released the emails himself, I’d have been concerned that they were fake. No one does this.

  • Demosthenes

Nice piece, John. Uday/Freddo Trump is a real idiot who now has placed Kushner and Manafort in greater legal jeopardy. One wonders how Mueller can keep track of all this.
