Fox News repeatedly, and breathlessly, reported that former FBI Director James Comey had leaked “top secret information” in his memo about Donald Trump trying to pressure him to drop the investigation of Michael Flynn.
Except it wasn’t true.
How did Fox News fix this egregious day-long error?
With a quick ten-second “whoopsie.”
Fox News conveniently pushed the Comey story to deflect attention from the growing scandal over Donald Trump Jr.’s self-professed collusion in agreeing to meet with a Russian government official to receive incriminating information about Hillary Clinton in an effort to help Trump’s election.
And Donald Trump, who spends his days watching TV (Trump has literally nothing on his schedule for today), dutifully joined in the chorus of misinformation:
Cafedotcom did a great compilation of Fox News’ “reporting.”
Fox News spent a whole day claiming James Comey leaked secret info. It wasn’t true, so they issued a 5 second apology (@MattBinder for CAFE) pic.twitter.com/arVrN9Qo01

mmmmmmmm…..ice cream.
This post headline is wrong but so is Fox. They apparently spent the day saying Comey leaked “top secret” info, not classified. The correction was that it wasn’t “top secret”, but rather “classified” info that he’d leaked.
They’re full of it, though, because the allegation made by some unnamed GOP pols was that Comey had included classified info in his memos, and he’d leaked a memo to his friend for sharing to the press, therefore he’d leaked classified info. But there was never any effort to prove that the memo he’d leaked was one of the ones containing the alleged classified info. So it’s a good bet that he didn’t.
Fox “News” is to news what ice cream is to dieting.
