The merits of yelling at Ivanka Trump

A man was reportedly kicked off a flight today after yelling at fellow passenger Ivanka Trump that her father was “ruining the country.”

My friend Brett Di Resta tweeted about it today, writing: “Democrats and Progressives, don’t do this please. In other words, don’t be an a-hole.”

Is Brett right? Let’s discuss.

First off, while Ivanka Trump is Donald Trump’s daughter, and de facto First Lady (at least for the time being), Ivanka is also soon to be one of Donald Trump’s most trusted White House advisers. She’s far more than a “first child,” and shouldn’t be treated any differently than we would any other top Trump official.

So the question becomes not “whether it’s fair to yell at Ivanka,” but rather, “whether it’s a good idea to yell at Trump officials at all.” And I’m not entirely convinced Brett is right.

Putting aside the fact that this happened on a plane — planes are notoriously bad places to cause a scene — is yelling at government officials off limits? It isn’t for Republicans. If you’ll remember during the Bush v. Gore recount in 2000, Republican operatives from DC (I knew one of them) stormed the room in Florida where local officials were examining ballots. Those 20-some operatives pretended to be an angry mob of angry voters, irate that the recount was still going on — when in fact, they were working on behalf of the Republican party. And they accomplished their goal: The media fell for it, and reported that the recount was simply out of control!

________________

Fast forward to the debate over health care reform and “Obamacare.” In that summer of 2009, reminiscent of the winter of Bush v. Gore, the Republicans organized mobs of supporters to storm congressional townhall meetings (the meetings members of Congress hold with constituents back home), and effectively scare the bejeesus out of any legislators thinking of supporting President Obama’s reforms.

Again, it was fake grassroots intended to create a perception that the country was rising up, and it worked.

And just a few days ago, I read about Republican congressmen who are afraid of standing up to Donald Trump, lest Breitbart, Hannity, the racist Alt Right and the rest of the GOP mob descend on them. It happened to one congressman, and all the others got the message. Yet again, Republican bullying tactics did their job.

Yelling at elected officials works.

I remember when I worked for Senator Ted Stevens back in the early 1990s. The Senator had just gotten back from a trip to Alaska, came to see me, and barked at me because some constituent had yelled at him in the airport. It didn’t matter whether the constituent was right — the voter back home had yelled about some issue I worked on, and that was enough to convince the Senator that I had messed up, and that I’d better fix it fast.

The other thing that regularly set Stevens off? Angry letters to the editor in the papers back home.

Republicans understand that mean girls rule.

I’m not necessarily suggesting that folks yell at Ivanka during take-off. But people like Ivanka, who seem to have their heart in the right place (if we can believe what we read about her), and who have zero experience in politics, need to hear from real people about just how concerned we are about her father. (As do the rest of the Trump’s staff, who seem far less good-hearted than his daughter.)

Then again, I once gave a quick snort while walking by Ed Meese.

Ivanka has helped her father to fraud innocent people. She is a con artist, a phony and a show off. She is ignorant in political matters and those who know her husband and it was also acknowledged by Obamas team that Jared is not very smart. Her brothers are just plain idiots.

  • A2er

Maybe we should just say (politely) ‘Thank you for your efforts to make America white again, sick again and more profitable for your family. We appreciate your family’s zero record of public service and unwillingness to pay taxes like the rest of us True Americans do.’

  • JetBlue is only coach, I think, but it’s a lot nicer coach than any other US airline. The seats are comfortable and large enough for adults with enough legroom and a tv screen with multiple channels for every seat. As coach goes it’s better than any other domestic carrier.

Not that I’m an Ivanka fan. I think she’s going to be the somewhat liberal family member they trot out to make themselves look less monstrous than they really are. Fuck that shit. Look at the cabinet appointments. Everything about this is worse than I would have imagined. If Ivanka has any influence with her father at all, it’s bad influence, not good.

  • Demosthenes

” I think this makes her more dangerous than her brothers.”

I agree. In contrast to Uday and Usay Trump, Ivanka doesn’t come across as a rich spoiled scumbag. She hides her true colors with skill and panache.

  • Katemon

Yes. One of my concerns is that Ivanka’s main role is to confuse the soft hearts of liberals, to give us false hope that her presence and influence will make a positive difference. She presents well, and is indeed the “liberal face” of her father. I think this makes her more dangerous than her brothers. I’m unsure of the merits of yelling at her, but I feel sure that trusting her intentions is a mistake.

I heard Ed Meese has never been the same since that day.

That they’re a-h***s? Yes, your team managed to confirm that

  • subframer

Not on a plane (duh) and not in front of children. Even a soulless prog like you knows what simple bad taste looks like. And had this ever happened to Michelle and family , you’d be going bananas. Spare me your “analysis.”

And as for posters on this board, you similarly have no class or tact.

She’s worth millions. Why was she on Jet Blue? Where were her security? The Trumps better get used to people disliking them, 3 million more than like them, in fact.

I agree that Ivanka is a member of the Trump administration, and hence deserves to be treated as such, rather than as some sort of child who should be exempt from criticism (which is bizarrely the argument I’ve seen in a lot of places) – That argument absolutely holds true for Barron or the grandkids, who are actual children, not an adult woman who is sitting in meetings with world leaders.

But not on a plane – don’t fuck up the flights of 150 other people who didn’t ask for this. Don’t be the liberal equivalent of that yelling Trump asshole, Don’t be the youtube pranksters, Don’t be the drunk old bitch I was on a flight with in 2006 who refused to sit in her assigned seat in coach and parked herself in first class and literally screamed at the top of her lungs about how she “deserved” the better seat until she had to be forcibly removed by security.

Even the people who agree with you will hate you, because on a plane, the only thing anyone cares about is experiencing as little friction as humanly possible.

Watching LBJ being driven out of political power has been the high point of my life. Good can defeat bad, it just takes more work than throwing in the towel and accepting the “lessor evil” – a true oxy-moron

Social pressure is important. For years, as the pig LBJ brutally murdered hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese and tens of thousands of working class GIs, we surrounded WH chanting “Hey, Hey LBJ. How many did you kill today?”

It wasn’t as important as our organizing slogan “Bring All the Troops Home Now” but it helped to paint a true picture of his mad dog regime, forcing him out of and setting the stage to do the same thing to Nixon.

She deserves to be yelled at; she is part of the grifting scam that is TRUMPkin & Co.

  • ORAXX

I’m pretty sure it was her idea of ‘slumming’.

  • Demosthenes

The GOP is expert at repetitive messaging of simple messages. The Democrats have a lot of material and can do itin return if they have the “cojones”. Do they or will they spend the next 4 years in a fetal position?

  • ORAXX

I suspect Ivanka’s attempt to rub shoulders with the unwashed masses was a one time event. Her experience, no doubt, confirmed her darkest fears regarding the peasant classes.

“need to hear from real people about just how concerned we are about her father.”

Agreed, but unfortunately angry aggression on a plane (especially to a woman traveling with her children) and getting thrown off the plane probably doesn’t really express “I am concerned” so much as “I am an angry irrational aggressive asshole who only confirms whatever negative stereotypes you have about The Other Side”. :/ Regardless of what one thinks of Ivanka Trump (or her jackass father), this was surely bad PR.

  • mf_roe

The only tRUMP child worthy of support is Barron. Apparently he has issues and has had bullying problems, which explains his mother’s focus on addressing the issue. there are reports of tapes showing Don the Con calling him a negative name. The rest are all adults and are fair game, especially in light of their plans of using the powers of their father’s office to enrich themselves. Call them out, make them respond, document their lies, BUILD the CASE.

  • Demosthenes

Like all New York social climbers, Ivanka Trump seeks respect. She is the “liberal” face for her father, so it is crucial she not be accorded any level of “liberal buy-in”. Remember: all she has done during the transition is help Daddy with corrupt pay for play deal with foreign leaders in Japan and elsewhere, and humiliate Al Gore by pretending her scientifically ignorant father may actually believe the science of global climate change. Like her father, Ivanka is a con artist.

  • Unlike the rest of her sociopathic family, Ivanka may well just be faking being human better than the rest. I’m not sure she has any more of a conscience than any of the others. Attempting to shame her is probably not going to accomplish anything. I do, however, understand the impulse and would probably not have been able to restrain myself from yelling at the spawn of a sexist racist neo-Nazi either.

  • Ivanka riding coach on Jet Blue? Family finances must be in a bad way.

  • Kansachusetts

John, I can’t find a Facebook “share” button anywhere but just above the comments. Unless I’ve somehow missed it, you really need to put it prominently next to the article, like other websites do. That will definitely increase your visibility. A lot of liberal readers are also sub-aggregators, who post to Facebook friends in the hundreds and thousands.

  • Nicholas A Kocal

Do not be fooled, Ivanka is probably more ruthless than her father. She just uses her beauty and sex to distract while going for the kill.
