Ben Carson doesn’t hate gays hard enough for Tony Perkins

Ha. Haha. Hahahahahahaha.

You guys, remember how during the Republican debate on Wednesday Ben Carson got asked to reconcile his flagrantly anti-gay views with the fact that he was on the Costco’s and Kellogg’s board while the company was implementing some rather pro-equality company policies?

The audience booed the question. The LGBT community rolled its eyes. And Tony Perkins apparently did a spit take at how unacceptably pro-gay Carson’s answer was.

Yep, really. From Reuters:

“I think he has to explain this,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Christian conservative lobbying group Family Research Council. “As he is pursuing the presidency, what he has to make clear is that the board positions should not be reflective of his public policy.”

Perkins and other conservative leaders say they fear that some of the changes at American corporations could be used to punish employees with unpopular political views. They worry, for instance, that workers who do not support same-sex marriage could be found in violation of anti-discrimination policies.

That Ben Carson — who thinks being gay is a choice, same-sex marriage caused the fall of the Roman Empire and ex-gay conversion therapy isn’t all that bad — is somehow not homophobic enough for Tony Perkins is so, so cute.

Because for Perkins, it isn’t enough to protect people’s deeply-held religious beliefs. In order to earn his vote, you have to prove that you have worked to make life more difficult for LGBT people in both public and private capacities.

Never mind the fact that Costco and Kellogg’s are now considered two of the best brands in the country precisely because of the strong LGBT protections they put in place while Carson was on the board — such as banning discrimination based on gender identity and providing health insurance for employees’ same-sex partners — Perkins is a thousand percent sure that discrimination was and always will be a necessary and good business decision.

And everyone else is a thousand percent sure that he’s wrong.

    IOW . . . they are fantasies

  • and did he succeed? (the bear asked with a smirk) After all, the appendix operation would be considered successful if the patient got the appendix out and lived. And there’s no question that somebody successfully removed Carson’s brain…

I would not agree that theological statements are lies. I would say they are mythic statements subject to private understanding. They are never strong arguments for any point under discussion but they can make meaningful metaphors.

That’s easy, “government isn’t supposed to be in every part of our lives” except when it is!

Notice how you rarely hear or see Tony Perkins or Ralph Reed anymore.
Now that gay marriage is legal they have lost their hateful platform AND donation base.
The whole world has turned against them.

  • Me not sure

Perkins should understand that people with unpopular views have always been punished or challenged in one way or another. That’s a part of the way in which social change occurs. As long as the government doesn’t participate through the use of its police powers to enforce a political orthodoxy, the dynamic will play itself out. The unpopular views will either come into popularity or fall away into a minority view or even into obscurity. Being unpopular is not the same as being oppressed

Some doctors have been known to remove their own appendix — but brain surgery is probably something you don’t want to do on yourself. Apparently, Carson tried.

It almost sounded like Carson supports equal rights for gays (and everyone). He also said that the government isn’t supposed to be in every part of our lives. I wonder how he reconciles those ideas with prohibiting gay marriage and the attempts to control women’s healthcare?

  • I’m angered by everything Carson is doing, including his active and willing participation in the continuing debasement of this country.

  • emjayay

I don’t think he’s typical at all. Many Republicans are perhaps ignorant and hateful, but not so much detached from reality lying grifters.

  • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Q: How can you tell when a politician is lying?

    A: Their mouth is open.

My concern is his lying about prostate cancer. He couldn’t tell if the cancer had gone away without a biopsy. If he was having “symptoms”, he would be in the late stages of prostate cancer. I know a couple guys with prostate cancer, and I’m angered about his deliberate misrepresentation.

  • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Perkins wouldn’t be happy unless a candidate advocates for our execution.

  • Indigo

You have to know the difference between fact and fiction before you can lie. Carson just makes up stuff, it might not be theological lies, but it’s fiction, story-telling, kinda like your avatar.

Do you feel, as I do, that Carson is running as a way to sell his book? I have a feeling that he knows he has NO chance to be president so he may as well rake in the book cash and enjoy the ride!

The restoration of “early mid-twentieth century German political values” you say? , I suspect they remain operative at certain socio-ecoomic levels among Euro-caucasian Americans. Any impression that it has been eradicated is not looking at the full spectrum of the American caste system.

  • So says the kid whose milk-drinking avatar would suggest he may be young enough to be my grandkid…

In addition to claiming no connection at all with Mannatech just the other night, there’s fairly substantive evidence:
    – Carson has lied about that alleged Popeye’s robbery (police have no record of any such robbery)
    – Lied regarding the stabbing he says he attempted on his friend or the stranger bully (this is one of the many details that keeps changing each time he tells the story)
    – Lied about the well-documented history of gun control in early 20th century Germany.
    – Lied about knowing for certain that Mahmoud Abbas was good friends with Vladimir Putin at university in Moscow in 1968, when in that year Putin was 16 and living in St. Petersburg (and presumably still in the Russian equivalent of high school).
    – Lied about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr being a conservative, when in fact Dr. King described himself as a democratic socialist; Republicans and conservatives at the time regularly referred to him as a communist subversive.
    – Lied about an MSNBC commentator calling him an Uncle Tom and of using ‘plantation rhetoric’ (the accused remarks never happened).
    – And he lies like a sack of horse manure every time he equates something he doesn’t like with 9/11, slavery, and/or Hitler.

Here’s the proof Carson lied about Mannatech:

o- yeah, bush lied and people died.

People who think Carson has not lied need to grow up. E.g. what do you consider about his claiming to have no connection to the fraudulent medical supplement company Mannatech, for which he did a video while supposedly having no connection to them?

  • Christian Garner

People who demonize Carson need to grow up, you can think some of his idea’s are “bat-shit crazy” but he still hasn’t lied yet o-

  • Nicholas A Kocal

Carson is a typical republican who will do anything for money.

Sounds like Carson was being very PC. I mean, if you are called a homophobe, to defend yourself, you need to give reasons why you aren’t a homophobe, right? If you only give an argument about not being called a homophobe, then you are giving a PC argument…you are being PC. If you give reasons why you are afraid of same-sex marriages and your reasons are proved to be good reasons, you can get rid of the homophobe label. Calling Dr Carson a homophobe is not PC. It’s a direct challenge. I’m afraid he failed to distinguish himself from a homophobe. He failed to answer a tough question and he resorted to PCism. So he is hypocritical.

  • The Family Research Council (triple sic for that) has been identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group, meeting all of the criteria — and repeatedly — required for such a designation.

It’s nice to see Tony Perkins once again confirming beyond any shadow of a doubt that they fully deserve it. I just wish Reuters would join the Associated Press in mentioning the fact, rather than simply characterizing the FRC as a ‘conservative Christian lobbying group.’

It’s like citing the Aryan Nations as a “conservative Christian group focused on religion and race issues” or the American Nazi party as “advocates for early-to-mid-20th century German political values.”

  • douglas01

Maybe a stockholder in those 2 companies could ask for a copy of the board minutes and see how Carson actually voted.
