Groupon selling Uzi target practice same week girl shoots Uzi instructor dead

Only days after a 9-year-old girl accidentally shot her firearms instructor to death with an Uzi submachine gun, Groupon is offering its subscribers target practice packages that include Uzis.

Groupon initially shut down its gun packages after the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre in Newton, Connecticut, where nearly two dozen young grade school kids were shot to death. The packages however started up again six months later.

Here’s one from Groupon’s Florida operation. It, and the deal below from Texas, include Uzis:

The AR-15, also mentioned in the above ad, is the weapon used by Adam Lanza to kill the schoolchildren in Newtown.

Gun safety advocates were not amused by the latest news.

“It’s clear now that Groupon’s concern after Newtown was about perceptions, not the underlying problem of gun violence,” said Naomi Seligman, director of the Gun Truth Project, which has successfully campaigned against gun-range deals in the past. “They’re putting aside the safety of their customers to service their own bottom line.”

The Uzi accident earlier this week happened in Las Vegas, after some tourists thought it would be a good idea to train their daughter how to shoot an Uzi submachine gun. The instructor set the 9-year-old girl’s gun on automatic, which lets the gun shoot 600 bullets per minute, and the girl quickly lost control of the gun, swinging around and shooting her instructor in the head. He later died.

Hmmm. I wonder why the USA has, by far, the largest number of shootings of all advanced industrialized countries. I’m sure it’s a happenstance. Move on. Nothing here.

In related news “‘Hands Up, Don’t Ship!’ Minneapolis UPS Workers Protest Shipments to Missouri Police – A dozen part-time UPS workers in Minneapolis took protest action on the job August 22, after discovering ties between Missouri law enforcement and a company, Law Enforcement Targets, whose shipments we handle each day. Some of us removed the company’s packages from trucks that would deliver them to law enforcement. Others, in solidarity, refused to ferry these packages to their intended trailers.

After public controversy last year, Law Enforcement Targets (the shipper- BP) withdrew a line of targets called “No More Hesitation,” which featured young children and pregnant women with guns. … It still offers an “Urban Street Violence” line that’s predictably messed-up, and a “Missouri” line designed with the Kansas City police.” http://labornotes.org/blogs/2014/08/hands-dont-ship-minneapolis-ups-workers-protest-shipments-missouri-police

About 400 people are killed by cops every year but the number is not exact. Although Congress instructed the Attorney General in 1994 to compile and publish annual statistics on police use of excessive force, this was never carried out, and the FBI does not collect this data either. wiki ” From 2005-2010, almost 3,800 people in the U.S. died from unintentional shootings. More than a third of the victims were under 25 years of age.” http://nyagv.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Accidental-Shootings-NYAGV.pdf

I can’t claim credit. Pretty sure Atrios came up with it first.

Good coinage! I’m going to appropriate it. Ammosexuals . . . hiding in their gun clubs.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

Oh I know. I’m actually surprised we haven’t seen more ammosexuals coming by to insist toddlers are stunted for life if they don’t know how to fire a semi-auto shotgun before they’re fully potty-trained.

“Rational adult.” See, right there’s the problem. There’s no rationality beyond emo-logic coming from the Gun Nuts. They need their gun-experience the way drug addicts need their Oxycontin.

Actually, it’s more accurate to say the Uzi fires 10 rounds a second — because on full-auto and with the trigger down, a 30 round clip will empty in just three seconds.

Still, that’s enough time to completely lose control of the gun and kill bystanders.

This post here, by the way, is more evidence of the almost entirely unregulated “gun rental” market. As I noted yesterday, the Federal Firearms License required to own fully-automatic weapons is expensive; it also requires a rather more detailed background check than, say, if you walk into a gun shop and buy any old hunting rifle.

However, once you have that license and own the full-auto firearms, you can rent them out to just about anybody you like. Moreover, the federal NICS (the instant background check service) does not allow gun renters to be checked. The reason for this is that if you rent a gun and do not take it off the premises, you can’t be said to be in possession of the firearm — even if you happen to be a convicted felon who is not legally entitled to own firearms. Or a child who any rational adult would realize is simply not big enough or strong enough to control an Uzi on full-auto…
