Catholic, Episcopal leaders in Liberia: Ebola is God’s punishment for “penetrating homosexualism”

Continuing their descent into some rather un-Christian actions, Catholic and Episcopal leaders in the west African state of Liberia signed on to a resolution that blames gays for the recent Ebola outbreak in the region.

Specifically, Archbishop of the Catholic Church of Liberia, Lewis Zeigler, and other church leaders came up with the notion that God is punishing Liberia for being too gay.

But they’re hoping that three days of fasting will help God get over his retributive homophobia.

(UPDATE: Apparently there’s some confusion as to the use of Episcopal vs Anglican. Yes, Episcopal is the US branch, but the Liberians apparently never got the message, as Episcopal is the term they use in their own article linked to in the story. So feel free to have a chat with them :)

Here’s their resolution:

That God is angry with Liberia, and that Ebola is a plague. Liberians have to pray and seek God’s forgiveness over the corruption and immoral acts (such as homosexualism, etc.) that continue to penetrate our society.

As Christians, we must repent and seek God’s forgiveness.

That a three-day indoor fast and prayer across the nation be observed, commencing next Wednesday, August 6th, and concluding Friday, August 8th.

That an inter-denominational committee be constituted to present said resolution to government.

That if government is in agreement, the Republic of Liberia be locked up for three days of fast and prayer. All movement should be restricted during those three days. People should stay at home for three days of silence, fasting and prayer.

Homosexualism. That’s a new one. (And don’t even get me started on “penetrate.”)

Of course, this wasn’t the first time the Catholic leadership in Liberia tried to blame gays for Ebola.  Zeigler had this to say earlier this year:

Archbishop-Lewis-ZieglerOne of the major transgressions against God for which He may be punishing Liberia, according to Archbishop Ziegler, is the act of homosexuality.

The Archbishop said Liberians are “whole-heartedly” engaging themselves in this act and that is being promoted in the country.

The Catholic Archbishop also stated: “Where are we going as Liberians if we are advocating for homosexuality? Are we not calling for curses upon ourselves? How will a man marry his fellow man, this is an abomination. These are the same things that brought down Sodom and Gomorrah.”

The thing is, I get that the Catholics and the Anglicans are increasingly distraught over the fact their membership is decreasing in developed countries. But is it really wise to align the church with the theological equivalent of witch doctors? No sane religious leader talks about God striking entire countries down with a plague because he’s mad at the gays.

And this isn’t the first time we’ve had to deal with rogue Catholic and Anglican leaders around the globe.  Whether it’s a Catholic cardinal in the Dominican Republic calling the American ambassador the Spanish equivalent of a “f*g,” simply because the ambassador is gay, or the Anglican leader in Nigeria who called gay marriage a “Holocaust,” things have gotten a tad out of hand in a very un-Christian way.

Then again, the head of the entire Anglican Church earlier this spring said that Anglicans simply must discriminate against gays, lest anyone misinterpret a show of tolerance as evidence that the Anglicans themselves are gay, and then they might get gay-bashed. (I am not making this up.)

So, perhaps the church in Africa is simply taking its orders from headquarters.
