HGTV scrubs home show by anti-gay anti-Muslim anti-abortion activist

In another blow for intolerance, HGTV announced that it was scrubbing a reality house-flipping series called “Flip It Forward,” after it was discovered the hosts are anti-gay and anti-abortion activists.

The brothers hosting the show, David and Jason Benham, are the sons of notorious anti-abortion protester Flip Benham, who headed up Operation Rescue, and now runs an off-shoot group. The one brother, David, is the lead activist, though the other, Jason, has been involved with some of the political activities.

RightWingWatch broke the story yesterday, noting that David Benham – who appears to be the far-worst of the brothers – had led a prayer rally outside the Democratic Convention in Raleph, North Carolina in 2012, during which Benham told a conservative radio host that he protesting “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” and “demonic ideologies tak[ing] our universities and our public school systems.”

David Benham "celebrates" outside a family planning clinic that was closed in North Carolina.David Benham said his brother Jason helped him organize the DNC protest.

David also helped to pass Amendment One, which banned gay marriage in North Carolina in 2012.

And David leads protests outside family planning clinics. Here Benham is “celebrating” the closing down of a family planning clinic in North Carolina:

Oh, and RightWingWatch reports that David doesn’t like the Muslims either. David calls Islam “the enemy,” and says it is “attacking” America.

And it gets better. David Benham also compared gay marriage to Nazi Germany:

In terms of Ken’s take on Referendum 74 (same sex marriage vote), if evil is being accepted and appreciated at the national level, aggressive Christian men must lead the charge against it. In the late 1940′s [sic] England realized this truth with Neville Chamberlain’s Policy of Appeasement and the Nazi regime. Chamberlain thought he could somehow “appease” the fuehrer, yet Winston Churchill aggressively stood against this policy and proclaimed that they must kill Hitler and destroy the regime in its entirety. It wasn’t long before Chamberlain’s “politically correct” policy fell flat on its face, and Churchill – the more aggressive man – took the reins and joined America in defeating the beast called, Naziism [sic].

Benham apparently wasn’t aware, or didn’t care, that gays were actually victims of the Holocaust, specifically targeted by Hitler:

Gays in Nazi Germany were considered a threat to German purity. The Nazis arrested 100,000 men, with 10,000 to 15,000 sent to concentration camps to die.

An actual pink triangle worn by a man accused of being gay by the Nazis during the Holocaust. The Nazis required gays to wear the marking, in the same way Jews were required to wear a Star of David.

Oh god, he talks about Leviticus giving gays the death penalty, then says that “homosexual sin” is actually worse than other sins because it “carries with it an agenda, other sins do not”:

In the Leviticus passage above it says that death is the consequence for homosexual sin. This is how detestable this type of sin is to God. However, Jesus came and took the consequences of this sin upon Himself on the cross. Homosexual sin is covered by the blood of Jesus the same way stealing is. The only difference today is that homosexual sin carries with it an agenda, other sins do not. Homosexuality demands acceptance, and the blood of Jesus cannot forgive sins that are no longer sins. The blood of Jesus cleanses sin.

Clearly, this goes far beyond simply having a religion, or an opinion. But don’t let that stop the far-right, and their gay Republican allies, from claiming that yet again their intolerance is the victim of our intolerance. Because, after all, it’s only okay when they do it.

Dan Savage had a nice retort to the “victim” crowd:

Once upon a time white people used to be able to go on TV and say the most racist shit imaginable (argue against legal interracial marriage, argue in favor of segregation) and keep their jobs and be invited back on TV to say that shit a second time. Then one day you couldn’t say that sh*t (not on TV, at least) and keep your job and be invited back to say that sh*t again. Opinions that used to be considered “respectable” were suddenly toxic career enders. We are rapidly reaching the same tipping point on LGBT issues. You can believe whatever you want, but you have to be careful when and how you express your anti-gay animus. Because it could cost you.

As David and Jason Benham just learned.

Amen.

(Maybe they can syndicate it in Brunei?)
