William Shatner interprets Elton John’s “Rocket Man” (video)

I’d never seen this video before. I’d never even heard about it.

It’s Star Trek’s “Captain Kirk,” William Shatner, singing – well, speaking – Elton John’s and Bernie Taupin’s “Rocket Man.”

How terribly disturbing.

Oof. Please don’t remind me how high is the ratio between XKCD’s use of ink and the quality of its jokes.

  • Monophylos Fortikos

The thing is, though, William Shatner was just about the last person in the world who came to realize what a joke William Shatner was. Oh, he embraced his status enthusiastically once he finally caught on…sort of like how Wil Wheaton enthusiastically reinvented himself into an Internet geek about a year or two late.

But Shatner’s golden lining is his sense of self parody….there’s cool and then there is COOL! Check out some of the stuff from his foray into pop…HAS BEEN! His cover of Pulp’s “Common People” almost blows the original away. But then again there’s:http://youtu.be/olCJUtlev7M

Plus the cross-eyed ’70s dirty beauty Karen Black!

That must have been some freaky TV special, that I probably deliberately avoided back in the day.

I vaguely remember seeing this years ago, so I didn’t click the link. I wanted to keep it that way.

I love this, every time I hear it. Thanks for lightening up my day!

Supposedly he’s teaching the bit Zachery Quinto.

Never heard of it? Congrats. You’re one of today’s Lucky 10K.

You know about the Star Wars Holiday Special, don’t you?

Try “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” by mr Leonard Nimoy…

Here in Austin the Alamo Drafthouse movie theatre plays stuff like this before movies. it’s unbelievable.

  • Lantor

This was spoofed on Family Guy a while back. I knew he had done this and I want to say Lenord Nimoy did a spoken word album as well but I had not seen the actual video. How awesome! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UXuSWUXDnuo#

There’s also Mr. Shatner’s rendition of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. Next time you want the party guests to leave, and you don’t mind them running screaming into the night – try that cover.

All great artists have a disturbing aspect to them.
    Goes with the territory.
