Patrick Stewart bids Earth goodbye, dressed as China’s dying moon rover (video)

You might have heard the news that China landed a rover on the moon. Unfortunately, their lunar rover, named Jade Rabbit, has a technical malfunction, and is facing imminent death. Well, actor Patrick Stewart, of Star Trek fame, dressed up as the rover and bid Earth farewell in a short clip on Jon Stewart.

Before we get to that, Jade Rabbit has been tweeting, and tweeted a rather touching goodbye:

Although I should’ve gone to bed this morning, my masters discovered something abnormal with my mechanical control system. My masters are staying up all night working for a solution. I heard their eyes are looking more like my red rabbit eyes. Nevertheless, I’m aware that I might not survive this lunar night.

If this journey must come to an early end, I am not afraid. Whether or not the repairs are successful, I believe even my malfunctions will provide my masters with valuable information and experience.

The sun has already set here and the temperature is falling very quickly. I’ve said a lot today, yet still feel like it’s not enough. I’ll tell everyone a secret. Actually, I’m not feeling especially sad. Just like any other hero, I’ve only encountered a little problem while on my own adventure.

Good night, planet Earth. Good night, humanity.

Indeed, they should be proud. Very few countries have managed to land anything on the moon, much less a probe and a rover at the same time.

Actually, I was rather moved and touched by the Jade Rabbit’s probably farewell message.

We anthropomorphize the heck out of our Mars rovers. It is what we do, we think of our machines, and our domestic animals, in terms that mirror our own existence and experience.

I think the Chinese have every reason to be proud of their accomplishment in landing the moon rover.

When AOL blocked the word ‘sex’ from their Newsgroups (back in the 1990s), they inadvertently blocked the Patrick Stewart fan group, “Bald Sexy Captain”

Colbert did a piece on this a couple nights ago and it was hilarious, too. By the end of the narrated account, he was openly bawling.

    Amen to that.

  6. Bose says:

Oddest example of anthropomorphism I’ve seen in a long time, or is it just social media gone wrong?

I’m genuinely saddened that the Chinese rover is most likely doomed. We can snicker at the failures of some particular country’s ambitions but when when it comes to science and exploration, one nation’s setback is a defeat we all suffer.

    Yeah, me too.

    Patrick Stewart is awesome.

I still have a crush on him.

I loved this last night on Jon’s show. It was beyond cute and funny. Thanks for posting.
