Horrific video of Pussy Riot & photographer whipped, tear-gassed by Russian police

I had heard about this earlier today, but hadn’t checked out the video until now. Dear Lord. It’s horrific. The Russian police went to break up an impromptu protest performance by the punk dissident group Pussy Riot at the Sochi Olympics, and the police (a local Cossack militia hired to help with Olympic security) decided it was necessary to tear gas the women and then beat them with whips – for singing a song.

But if that weren’t enough, the police then started whipping a photographer.

It’s ghastly. The Telegraph posted some video online that’s simply incredible to watch.

I’ve made several gifs of the key moments – I’m speechless.

First tear gas:

Then whips:

Then they whip a photographer:

Then they throw one of the women to the ground, and then whip her for good measure:

If you haven’t seen Stephen Colbert’s recent interview with two of the band members of Pussy Riot, it’s a must-see.

If this happens again team USA would be smart to boycott any games. This is not safe and we can and should protest with our dollars. Let’s not let politicians jeopardize our best and brightest again. They want to send us to especially anti-West countries which is horrifying.

It looks like cossacks have either been removed or forced to take off their uniforms. Russian media reports that not one of them was seen the next day on the streets.

  • Olterigo

There was also uniformed police there just watching and afterwards telling people “nothing to see here.” As for Pussy Riot, all of Russian media keeps referring to them as Pussy Riot. So, Pussy Riot is not over.

  • Olterigo

There are currently either 700 or 800 of these cossacks participating in “keeping order” in Sochi. And the location is central. The location is right next to the seaport. I’ve never been to Sochi, but Yandex Maps (Russian version of Google Maps, which actually has higher quality photos of locations within the former USSR than Google) shows a similar looking promenade location near center.

From the Daily Show, Jon Stewart and Jason Jones put together one of their most hilarious and insightful segments: Jason Jones Live From Sochi-ish – Better Off Red. For American right-wing extremists, Putin’s Russia has become something of a Holy Grail, the ideal nation. So John Stewart, Jason Jones and (at the end of the segment) Homer Simpson ask, why don’t go there? A reasonable question:

There’s something fishy about this. Those guys with the whips were on the scene so fast they must have already been there. Why would PR choose to do their extraordinary hopping around when there are guys with whips standing right there?

  • SkippyFlipjack

This photo is called “After horrific tear gas and whipping attack, band members gather their things and head off to lunch.”

“Horrific” video? Really? I know that fits into the narrative of abusive Russian actions but watch the video again — it almost looks staged. When you consider that Pussy Riot recently put out a statement saying that the two members who appeared on the Colbert show (shown prominently in this video) were no longer associated with the group it seems like there’s more to this story. Even if it’s all on the level yes, it’s bad behavior that deserves condemnation, but calling it “horrific” is like giving the first figure skater of the night a 10 — it maxes out the outrage meter and leaves you nowhere to go.

Fortunately, IOC immediately reprimanded Russia and canceled its participation in the next four Olympic Games. NOT

“[IOC spokesman Mark] Adams says the IOC wants to know more details but called it “largely an issue for” the Russian government.

He added that “it’s a shame if the Olympics is used as a political platform” and that “we saw the strong feelings, on both sides, these things can provoke.”” http://www.ctvnews.ca/sochi/ioc-images-of-pussy-riot-members-being-attacked-are-very-unsettling-1.1695146

I’m looking forward to the next Olympics in another “civilized” country to watch public executions; public flogging is not enough for me. On the other hand, it could be made an Olympic event.

Idk, in my opinion some of the things that are “organized” on Youtube are essentially illegal. People are harrassed, threatened, and otherwise bullied en masse. The reporting system is in its infancy and barely works. They don’t have time to go through comments every day. They are no better than VK. They should just close the comments like they did on Yahoo! News for a while. They get enough bad press as it is.
And it’s possible for people to be identified through videos so allowing unlimited comments makes it easy for something to happen to them quickly. There are no rules against posting personal info about someone.

I read the Daily Mail too see what the wingnuts are up to. They have to be somewhat unbiased but the comment section is not. It’s very telling.

The more popular the social site or web commenting platform, it seems their tolerance for rank bigotry just goes up.

From VK to YouTube to FaceBook — and even places like Instagram and the commenting sections in HuffPo — as the number of subscribers goes up, any duty to moderate the community’s behavior seems to go right out the door.

To put it another way, it’s easy to hire a small group of people — or even install an automated computer program — to automatically reject any complaints. And I honestly think that’s what a lot of ‘em are doing. You could submit a report that a video or FB page is openly advocating rape, murder, and mayhem, and I’ll wager anything that at least 9 times out of 10, you’ll get a reply stating that the video or page in question does not violate the ToS.

Saw a youtube coming out story once where the kid said his mother tried to beat
the girl out of him-beginning at six years old until he was a teenager. No mercy.

    Your tea party at work…
Maybe if they’d start with some of the terrible parenting I’ve observed.

It is amazing that anyone is surprised at the brutality that Mr. KGB can allow. The bottom line is that there is really little difference between Putin and many of the hate filled in this country except availability of action.

  • FLL

Putin would be so much more harmless if he had grown up in America. He wouldn’t be jailing journalists and having Pussy Riot publicly beaten in the streets and running the country; he’d just be some guy living in his mother’s basement in Ohio posting his hateful BS on YouTube.

  • MyrddinWilt

This is what bugs me when they compare the UK’s most offensive man (Jeremy Clarkson) to Rush Limbaugh. Clarkson does a show on motor cars where his two co-hosts regularly call him a complete idiot. Rush decides Republican party policy on numerous issues and everyone calls him a genius.

And there is a big difference between a comedian who makes jokes that occasionally come out rather nastier than intended and a shock jock who is getting an audience by targeting people telling his audience to hate them.

Russia is another step further, instead of one party having a very close relationship to hatemongers like Limbaugh and co, the government is writing their talking points to ‘justify’ the attacks that they are orchestrating.

  • FLL

Thank you! Thank you! Someone had to say it.

These police and Putin are the ones who deserve the designation of “thugs.”

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

YouTube’s comments are a cesspool, and always have. Not that they shouldn’t moderate things better. But there are hateful people all over the world. In America, they live on YouTube. In Russia, they run the country. There’s a difference.

  • MyrddinWilt

And Putin will be wondering why people in Ukraine would rather risk civil war than an alliance with Putin’s Russia.

If it were legal, or defacto legal, here…it’d happen.

  • Anonymous

Look at the comments if you dare, the wingnuts comments from here are disgusting. I’m not going to quote them because they make me sick. All I have to say is that Youtube is being used to organize hate with its uncensored comments. People makes threats on there regularly and it’s just as bad as the posts on VK. America has socially become the paranoid, neocon shithole that Russia is.
