Meet Katya, the young Russian sadist who kidnaps gay youth for sport

A horrific (and terrific) documentary (try this link, if the previous doesn’t work) from Liz McKean of the UK’s channel 4, called “Hunted,” looks at anti-gay vigilante gangs in Russia, and the overall Russian religious right anti-gay movement.

Channel 4 literally got inside an anti-gay Russian vigilante group, and filmed them planning and executing a kidnapping of a gay youth in St. Petersburg, Russia.  There are certainly some ethical issues surrounding what Channel 4 did.  But it’s an important video, and a necessary one, that might finally break this long-ignored story wide open.

UPDATE: Read part 2 of this story, “How Russian neo-Nazi anti-gay kidnappers are using Facebook, Instagram and VK.com.”

The video is beyond horrific.  In this small segment, above, the young man is punched repeatedly in a room full of 13 men and one woman named Katya. She’s the ringleader, and a vicious sadist who revels in directing the kidnappings and interrogating the victims herself.

occupy pedophilia russia gay

I want to know who Katya is.  I want her full name, and more.  If anyone knows, please contact me. (We have her name now – I’ll be following up on this in my next post.  But please keep trying to find the full names of the other members of her criminal conspiracy.)

We’ve written about these groups before. I’ll go into it in much more detail below, but in a nutshell, they lure young gays, usually teens, into meeting with someone for a date (or for fooling around), the teen shows up at an apartment and are greeted by a group of men who then kidnap and torture them, sometimes pouring urine on them or raping them with objects.  They film the assault and then publish it online to out the person to the world, which is a disaster for most of these people.

Kidnapped young gay Russian forced to drink urine by vigilante groups the Russian government refuses to prosecute.

Kidnapped young gay Russian forced to drink urine by vigilante groups the Russian government refuses to prosecute.

The biggest network is called Occupy Pedophilia (gays and pedophiles are the same thing to these people).  It has cells in 30 cities across Russia, and the Russian authorities did nothing for a year and a half until CNN finally did a show about it, and the Russians reluctantly arrested the group’s leader for something else totally unrelated to the kidnappings.  Except they refused to arrest anyone else involved with the group, even though there are videos of the committing the crimes, so the group lives on, and keeps kidnapping gay youth.

Russian “family values” leader tells gays to go kill themselves

But before I get to the kidnapping, the documentary starts with a Russian family values leader named Timor, who runs a group called “Parents of Russia.” Timor talks about how he attends gay events and pretends to be someone working with the event, handing out goodie bags. In fact, the bags contain soap-on-a-rope, and a card urging the gay person to go kill themself.

Here’s one of Timor’s accomplices. He tells the event attendees that he’s with the event and hands them the noxious gift bag:

At the same time, Timor and his friends hang outside the entrance to the gay event and yell at any women who are attending, telling them they’ll gladly give them “heterosexual therapy.”   Timor’s friend then say that he thinks gays should be hanged and burned.  This is what counts as a “family values” group in Russia.  And America’s religious right is actually helping Russian anti-gay groups organize to become even stronger.

hang-them-burn-them

Then the family values group appears to call in a bomb scare to the police.

Timor, who lives near St. Petersburg, hints at about 7:40 into the video that his people called in the bomb scare.

Timor, basically admitting to calling in the bomb scare.

Why is this man not in jail?  That question is a recurring theme in Russia, where only dissidents it seems ever end up in jail.

And for the record, Timor, like his American counterparts, doesn’t come across as the biggest heterosexual you’ve ever met (check out Timor clapping his hands about 7:48 into the video).

Dima loses an eye

The documentary also tell the story of Dima, who was attacked at a gay event in St. Petersburg, and lost an eye as a result.  No arrests have been made.

“First they shut us up with their laws so we cannot say anything in our defense, and then they say we are similar to murderers and perverts. If it’s constantly drilled into people that we are murderers, scum and perverts, I understand why these guys shot at me.”

The Russian Orthodox church plays its part

They also interview members of the Russian Orthodox church clergy, who are helping to sow the seeds of hate:

Speak for yourself.

“Occupy Pedophilia” and the far-right vigilantes who kidnap gay youth

Then they meet with a representative of Human Rights Watch, who is monitoring the situation in Russia, and she shows a video of a young gay man kicked in the face and falling to the ground unconscious.  It’s at 17:20 in the video.  Oh, and they’ve got the faces of the guys who did it.  (Guess who’s not in jail?)

The HRW rep shows another video of a man in Novosibirsk, outside, naked, hands tied behind his back, with a gun to his head, forced to say to the camera that he’s gay, and then they force him to rape himself with a bottle.

rape-with-bottlebottle-2

HRW says that the Russian authorities have refused to condemn the attacks, so the attackers think their actions are sanctioned by the government.

The documentary filmmakers were also able to get inside the largest group coordinating many of these attacks, Russia’s anti-gay ultra-nationalist vigilante group called “Occupy Pedophilia.”  The group was formed at least 18 months ago, as we’ve reported earlier, and the Russian government has done nothing about their ongoing kidnapping and torture of gay teens.  Only after CNN reported on the group and its leader, Maxim Martsinkevich, a few weeks ago did the Russian government finally arrest him.

Katya and “Occupy Pedophilia – St. Petersburg” take us inside the kidnapping and torture of a gay youth

The woman with the red hair below is Katya. She heads up Occupy Pedophilia’s St. Petersburg branch (the network is active in over 30 Russian cities).  It’s a wonder Katya is not in jail, as Katya is a vicious sadist who revels in directing the kidnapping of young gay Russians, and then interrogating the victims herself. You’ll see more Katya in action in a moment.

Below, Katya meets with a few members of her cabal to plan the next kidnapping:

That’s Pavel on the left, and Vladimir on the right. They’re Katya’s co-conspirators.

These animals actually let the UK film crew film there.  Here are a few of the members of the conspiracy preparing to trick a young gay teen into coming over to an apartment, so they can kidnap him and film their interrogation:

A better look at Katya, defending her criminal conspiracy.

You have to consider how bad the rule of law is in Russia for these people to be willing to show their faces.

At 22 minutes into the film, they lure a young gay teen to their apartment, thinking he’s coming to hook up with another guy – instead he’ll find the gang ready to assault him.  At 23:30 they catch their prey and a group of them forcibly subdue him, while Katya gives orders. There are 13 men among the kidnappers.

occupy-pedophilia-in-action

Below is another view of the scene, mid-kidnapping. You can see Katya and a few of the other faces from earlier. They lowered the lights and told the UK cameraman not to film, but he pushed his way in and filmed anyway. The images were dark, but I’ve lightened them with Photoshop so you can see the face of the criminals in action:

occupy pedophilia

mid-kidnap-2

kidnappers

You can hear the muffled victim, his mouth either gagged or covered by someone’s hands, while the 13 men subdue him like an animal. The victim starts to cry and scream while muffled.

Throughout the entire kidnapping, Katya is barking orders to the co-conspirators.

kidnap-3

Then at 25:22 you hear and see the man in the middle, in the white sweater, holding the victim down and beating him. Note that, again, it’s easy to identify the various perps from the photos.  If the Russians wanted to, they could easily arrest all of these people.  But they don’t, because Russia isn’t a modern, developed, civilized country with any rule of law.

Katya makes the mistake of identifying the one in white as “Sergei.”

kidnap-4

I made an animated gif of Sergei repeatedly punching the victim while the other conspirators mill about drinking and enjoying themselves, and while Katya continues to giving orders, including finally telling Sergei to perhaps go a bit lighter on the guy he’s punching:

beating-russian-gay-kidnap-victim

Sergei punches the gay kidnap victim twice with his right arm, then once with his left, before Katya suggests perhaps he go a little lighter.

You can find this scene at 25:20 into the video.

You then realize that they’re going to keep punching him until he agrees to do an interview on camera that they will then likely post on Russian social media site VK.com.

They tell the victim that if he doesn’t consent to be interviewed they’ll turn him over to the police where he’ll be raped with a stick:

katya-and-sergei-kidnap

Tell me again why Katya and Sergei aren’t in jail?

More shots during the kidnapping (the least I can do is expose them):

more-shots-during

Katya continues to choreograph the entire crime, barking orders ever few moments.  More kidnapper cameos:

more-kdinappers-3

The victim is now, Katya reports, “hysterical and crying.”  She’s getting into her element now.

katya-more

Not surprisingly, Katya runs the interrogation, while they mock the young man and call him “faggot” repeatedly in Russian:

katya-runs-interrofgation

This pig, below, filmed the entire scene.  In the background you hear a struggle and the muffled cries of the victim:

russian-filming-

Katya then warns the victim that the journalists are going to leave soon, and the 13 boys are going to do far worse to him.

Katya then admits that she’s committed this crime a number of times previously.

occupy pedophilia russia gay

katya-sadist-2

Katya then asks the victim if he’ll lose his job if they publish the video they’re making of him, and everyone finds out he’s gay. He says yes, and they all laugh at him:

katya-laughs-gay

They then discuss whether to pour urine on the victim’s head.  It’s a common “therapy” these groups use to “cure” gays they’ve kidnapped.  Katya decides she’s bored, so they force the young man to dance around the room instead.  They finally let him go after an hour, but as reporter McKean notes, the victim knows that his video is going up online, so he’s going to be outed.

This is torture

This is torture.  It is one of the most disgusting and infuriating things that I have ever witnessed.  But what this video shows is that Occupy Pedophilia was not simply one man.  The branches in the rest of Russia are real, and they’re participating in regular human rights abuses, with impunity.

The rest of the video, thankfully, looks at some amazing gay advocates in St. Petersburg, and their ongoing efforts to protest in a country that has banned protest.

America has its problems, but our government doesn’t collude with ultra-nationalist groups that kidnap and torture kids.  Perhaps the two Yale law professors, and a certain DC-based gay blogger, should watch this video before they post more stories about the equivalence between homophobia in America and homophobia in this Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

The fact that this Katya demon isn’t in jail attests to the fact that Russia under Putin is just as backwards as it was under the Soviets.  This is not Europe.  This is not a modern country.  And I can’t imagine why anyone tourist, or business, would want to have anything to do with the place.

Hi John Aravosis, I read your article and I couldn’t help but notice your background (masters in Foreign Service from Georgetown, worked in US Senate, World Bank). I’m surprised that you seem to be unaware that the neo-nazi’s and nationalists in Russia that have recently started a gay hunting movement are also part of the US powers that be program. The US has been funding skinheads and other nationalist groups for decades in Russia through different oligarchs and organized crime groups. Obviously the guys at Soros’s team and other channels of influence organizing this theater are counting on the Russian government to crack down on the nationalists and thus beckon the nationalists to rally around protests as well. This is obviously why the Russian government has not cracked down on the gay hunters, plus the gay victims themselves are awkward or lazy to get involved with writing complaints to the police. The views of most church clergy and society are dangerously close to that of neo-nazi’s and beligerent nationalists in Russia. That is why Putin is forced to court them and their views. Russia is full of backward and ignorant people and if Putin goes out of power, then most likely there will be a terrible civil war with nationalists or massacres of milions commited by nationalists. This is just what the powers that be in the US would like to see. The situation is complex and the Russian gay movement needs to have some of it’s big strong guys luring and trapping this Katya and her US backed neo-nazi thugs in Russia. This gay hunting neo-nazi movement is so new that most people had never heard of such a thing unless you are in the gay community or read the western internet news feeds. Not many people have ever even heard of this in Russia. It will take some time, and if the gay community in the west would like to have Katya and her gang delivered to them on a plate, it can be organized. You just need to keep in mind that the British TV crew was able to get into the group because the group is supported by the same people that organized the nationalist takeover in Kiev. By the way, the nationalist group Right Sector in Kiev has issued an interesting statement to Russian nationalists that says they need not be angered at Ukrainian nationalists because soon they will be able to attain great success together!

  • Simon

To elaborate – in the Yeltsin years, when the Soviet Union fell apart, liberal economic policies (introduced by Americans) alongside “Democracy” were introduced and the result was disastrous. State assets were flogged for nothing and a handful of people became obscenely rich*. This is the origin of the modern Russian kleptocracy, and this is what ‘Western liberalism’ means to many Russians.

    * As a side note, many of these men were Jewish, which is part of the reason for the worrying rise in Russian antisemitism. Also, Putin is often credited with destroying their power. The fact that some of these hated (former) oligarchs (like Khodorovsky) are uncritically celebrated by Western media as liberal democrats doesn’t help things.

  • Simon

This is horrific, but I don’t think the way you frame it – that the reason for this is that Russia is simply backward and uncivilized, in contrast to the ‘liberal West’ – is helpful at all. A narrative of Russia versus the liberal, pro-gay West plays directly into the hands of Russian homophobic nationalists (like Putin).

I’m a pacifist by nature, but I would be completely okay if someone hunted these disgusting assholes down, sodomized them and then killed them, but very very very slowly.

They’ll never become respectable human beings, and they don’t deserve the right to live in this century, millennium, whatever.

They’re mini hitlers, basically. I am pretty sure the only reason they don’t kill them is because THAT might get them in trouble. If it was government sanctioned, I would not be surprised if they killed them.

Can someone PLEASE explain to me how Russia won the freaking bid? “Oh Russia isn’t at all like you hear!” I see frequently. Sorry, Russia, you suck. Your country sucks. Many of your people suck. Your laws suck. If Germany and Japan can come out on the positive side of socialism, can’t you get your country’s shit together, PLEASE?

Hi Mike. If you bothered reading the story, or actually googling, you’d see that there are 30 of these groups all across Russia and that they’ve kidnapped 1500 people in the last 18 months alone. And that doesn’t take into account the other problems, such as the anti-gay propaganda law, or the government’s collusion in refusing to investigate these crimes. So, there’s a little bitch in this convo, but it’s not me.

You can’t watch too much of that stuff or you will be physically ill for the next two or three days. The raw video that was available online as recently as last summer was disgusting. Even when they edited out the actual assault portions, the victim would be bloody and black and blue at the end of the video and that would be shown.

A favorite move is for them to force the victim to praise Tesak and say that they agree with what he is doing and that people like themselves don’t deserve to live. Tesak sometimes forces his victims to dance around and hold one of his nutritional products and read from a commercial script. In other words, he gets them to endorse one of his online products, especially if the victim is a semi-famous person or celebrity. He loves trapping public figures.

The question as posed above is incorrect. My complaint is not about hypocrisy, it’s about political differences regarding despicable Democrats and Republican politicians and how to evaluate them. My approach is that Democrats and Republicans are indistinguishable and that they have a lot in common with Putin’s United Russia. And that violence is much, much worse here than in Russia, although because Putin’s actions are as dangerous as Bill Clintons in term of fomenting violence, that could change and we’ll know soon after Sochi is over, how much it;s going to change.

That’s the leftist approach to this question and expressing it repeatedly in context advances the discussion. That was the jist of my deleted comment. It continues to be my position and I plan on continuing to press it, just as I will press it in reference to the summer games in Rio, where, except for Iran and possibly Iraq, has the largest numbers of gay murders that we know of.

I remain confident that the left’s viewpoint will win over the Democrat and Republican rightwing viewpoint here and among the working class as a whole. There are a lot of lefties who post here. As for myself, I’ll continue to post as long as I’m able because I enjoy the wit and determination of of people in the LGBT communities.

Some members of the Duma have publicly praised the work of Occupy Pedophilia and Occupy Gerontophilia for doing society a favor.

They entrapped Denis by posting in a gay online chat forum that “Uncle Dima” was looking for a virgin gay boy for sex and would pay the equivalent of several hundred dollars. Denis responded and “Uncle Dima” convinced him in the online chat that it would be okay and he wouldn’t be raped or whatever. In other words, he talked the 15-yr-old boy into agreeing to meet him in a park in Moscow. Then when he showed up, they ganged up on him.

That was an Occupy Gerontophilia gang. They say their goal is to prevent young boys from being “recruited” into the gay lifestyle. They also beat up their victims, give them urine therapy and post the videos online. They also get the victim’s full name, home town, name of school, etc. I have even seen them call all the phone numbers they find in a victim’s cell phone and have the victim confess to the friend/relative on the other end of the call that he’s gay.

They have actually called their victim’s parents, etc., and posted audio of that online.

    Oh, already have it :)

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Right, I was wondering what the deal was with them going after the boy.

  • Ninong

    John,

I don’t know if you say this very detailed article from August 2013 in The Moscow Times: http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/anti-gay-vigilante-groups-face-backlash/484774.html

They’re actually talking about backlash against the Occupy Pedophilia and Occupy Gerontophilia groups. That young boy with Maxim Martsinkevich used to work as “bait” for Martsinkevich but then he founded his own group, called Occupy Pedophilia. I think he’s 17 now. Anyway, he lures young gay teenage boys online with offers of money for sex. He poses as an older gay man offering to pay a young gay teenager for sex. Then when the victim shows up, they go into the same sort of assault mode.

If you remember that video you posted of 15-yr-old Denis, the blond boy who was assaulted on video, that was carried out by one of the Occupy Gerontophilia groups.

Ok thanks, will check it out, doing a longer piece on Katya and what I’ve found, for tomorrow.

  • Ninong

I think Katya is in St. Petersburg. She posted a Restruct video clip of her asking random people on the street what their views were on freedom for Tesak (Maxim Martsinkevich): http://vk.com/zigunovakaterina

She claims Maxim Martsinkevich as her “father” on her VK profile but she gave her age as 24 in that October 2013 interview with Australian TV. Martskinevich lists her as his “daughter” on his VK profile but he’s only 29.

According to Martsinkevich’s Restruct website, he’s in jail in Moscow. There is a discussion posted outlining his defensive strategy. He’s facing charges for violating the same law he was previously convicted of violating. He’s facing up to 5 years in prison but I believe I read that the court is expected to sentence him to 3.5 years this time. Actually what I read was that he had been sentenced to 3.5 years in absentia??

He was last released from prison at the end of December 2010 after serving three years.

  • Olterigo

I believe In the Life does not exist anymore.

    John,
In an October 2013 video interview with an Australian TV documentary producer, Katya gave her age as 24.

  • FLL

I just watched the entire 49-minute documentary (YouTube link here.) I’m sure there have been many more than the two officially reported deaths during the recent terror campaign throughout Russia. (I downloaded the documentary.) This documentary needs to be seen in the U.S., whether on PBS or some other free or cable network. Americans will instantly notice the similarity between the events in this documentary and Ku Klux Klan activity during the heyday of the Klan. The British Channel 4 team has done at least one service by exposing Katya (aka Ekaterina Zigunova) and Sergei. Maxim Martsinkevich is presumably in custody in Moscow awaiting trial, or perhaps a good job offer from Putin’s government. Where are Katya and Sergei?

John, the “family values leader” guy is named Timur Isaev (pronounced teemOOr). Sadly, it looks to me like the “Parents of Russia” page might be a closed private group in comparison. But here’s a VKontakte page of one of his 2 groups “Muslim NGO Action” (that’s what he calls it). https://vk.com/deystvie_islam Their ideology is a kind of mix of Russian patriotism and believing in “morality” and, not surprisingly, fighting Western propaganda.

  • Ninong

Other video clips posted by Katya and her crew start out with video of them meeting to discuss the next victim. Usually there are three or four of them together in a cafe setting having drinks or something. So that’s their usual procedure.

I think what happened with the BBC is that they convinced Katya to speak to them on camera and she agreed because she wanted to get “her message” across. She was stupid enough to allow a BBC cameraman into the room where they “interrogated” their victim. That’s why she kept telling the guy who was beating up the victim to not go so hard on him. You even had guys holding their hands up to block the camera during the more brutal segments but the cameraman was persistent and at least got the audio.

They didn’t complete their interrogation the way they usually do but only because there was “a journalist present.” They even let the victim leave earlier than usual and the cameraman followed him to “offer assistance.”

All of Tesak’s videos start the same way, with them talking about their target and how they came to pick him. They usually show video of chat logs with their “bait” and the “victim” having a conversation about maybe hooking up. Then they have one of their videographers video the entire encounter from beginning to end, after which it is edited down to remove the really brutal parts so that it can be posted online.

That’s because they are not just anti-gay. They are of various right-wing, monarchist, nationalist, white supremacists stripes. I’ve just watched the documentary (having downloaded it before YouTube took it down). “Monsters” is the only word for them. I thought I was prepared for what I’d see, but I’m still shaken by it.

  • Ninong

No, of course not. And their twink videographer is not gay either.

  • Ninong

No, I don’t. I just looked at them again and I don’t think it’s the same guy. That’s because I don’t see a tattoo on the left chest in the second photo. I thought the second photo was the same guy, just a little older. But not anymore.

However, what about the guy captioned as “Sergei” in your photo? The one that reads “Are you getting angry, Sergei?” Is that the same guy in the first photo I linked or not?

P.S. — Too many of them are named Sergei. LOL

I imagine it’s geo-restricted to UK viewers only because of the license fee (which covers all UK TV, not just the BBC channels, although I’m not completely sure of all the whys and wherefores).
There are ways around it (using a VPN service like Tunnelbear, for example), but probably not ones you’d be allowed to officially endorse.
I saw the documentary on TV; it was both brilliant and harrowing.

  • Muko

To be honest, this seems like every American right-winger’s wet dream.

    John,
As you know, the Russian social media sites are full of horrific video clips of gays being beaten by homophobic thugs in Russia, as well as some of the other former republics of the Soviet Union. Almost all of the ones on VK have been edited and reposted to meet whatever minimal standards VK now requires. However, some of them are still on there in individual private personal profile pages. A lot of them appear as “evidence” posted by gays and their allies.

At least two of the victims are reported to have died. One at the hands of his captors and the other after he was turned over to the Russian police, along with the video “evidence” provided by his captors. He has been reported to have “died during trial,” whatever that means. I think it means he was found dead in his cell during the period the trial was going on???

  • mirror

John, I’m especially troubled today because I’m reading your post here side by side with the front page article in The Seattle Times about why people are staying away from Sochi. I doesn’t say anything about the revulsion many world citizens feel toward the idea of supporting a regime which overtly foments and encourages the persecution and open torture of minority groups.

This glossing over by a lot of the media about what Russia and Putin are really like is very disturbing to me. And I’m kind of surprised about The Seattle Times. I’m used to them being a conservative propaganda organ, but this protecting Putin’s reputation takes their twisted values to another level. Maybe they are just the AP’s values. I don’t have other papers to compare to.

Thanks for working on this, John, AmericaBlog, and participants here in the AmericaBlog community.

  • Ninong

Here’s a recent video clip of Katya interviewing random people on the street in Russia (probably St. Petersburg) asking them what they think should be done about Maxim Martsinkevich (her idot and spiritual guru — she claims him as her “father”). http://vk.com/zigunovakaterina?z=photo14570303_313804702%2Falbum14570303_177814744#/zigunovakaterina

There’s a young guy with her holding a sign in Spanish reading “Free Maxim Martsinkevich,” as well as at least one other guy who looks to still be in his teens. There’s a tremendous amount of background noise in that video clip so it’s very hard to understand much of what she is saying after she says “please” to everyone she greets. That’s the English word usually given for the Russian greeting пожалуйста, which is how she starts every conversation. It’s just a polite word they use before they ask a question. In other words, you would say, “please, how are you?” if you wanted to ask someone how they’re doing.

Anyway, she’s obviously asking them if they agree with her that Maxim should be let go.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Good catch, hadn’t seen his naming her

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

You think those two photos are the same guy?

  • Ninong

    John,
I just added a second photo to my above post. Please look at your photo captures, in particular the one captioned “Are you getting angry, Sergei?” and the last one that features “Sergei” standing to the right of Vladimir.

Now look at both of the pics that I linked above. Isn’t this the same guy? When was the BBC documentary made? Wasn’t it a few months ago? Could the first pic I linked be when he was a little younger and the last one I linked him several months later after more pumping iron?

I don’t know, but that looks like the same guy to me, what do you think?

  • pappyvet

Despicable. And to think that there are “Christian” groups here who support the Russian anti gay laws is most disgusting.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

    Yeah, and he’s not gay

  • Ninong

    John,

I think that both Vladimir and Sergei have been featured in previous video clips. Vladimir is the guy who lured the victim in the BBC filmed incident.

I could be wrong but I think that these two photos are of the same guy, who appears in several other photos with Katya.

This is just sadistic shit dressing itself up as morality.

  • Ninong

    John,
No, I don’t think that’s the same Sergei I was talking about. I may be wrong, but the Sergei I was talking about is the guy in the black T-shirt standing to the right of Vladimir in your last photo.

I think that’s Sergei Samsonov in the black T-shirt, but I could be wrong.

P.S. — One more interesting point. Maxim “Tesak” Martsinkevich was born May 8, 1984, so he’s 29 years old. His VK profile lists two children and the first one named is Ekaterina Zigurnova, aka Katya in your BBC film clip. Likewise, her VK profile lists Maxim Martsinkevich as her father. Interesting considering that he is only 29.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

    Monsters. Simply monsters.

The fact they feel free to post and publish abundant evidence of themselves committing horrific crimes, without any apparent fear of legal retaliation or consequences says the Russian government actually approves of what they’re doing.

And as FLL remarks in the comments below, no, if such a thing were posted by Americans on an American social media website, not only would these pictures and videos be taken down, the perpetrators would be arrested and charged at least with kidnapping, assault (sexual and otherwise), and hate crimes.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis
  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Okay, I need to confirm that that is THE Sergei. I’m still trying to track down the names of her accomplices, any help is appreciated.

  • Indigo

Obviously the Russian government does sanction these events. They are well enough publicized that if the government did not sanction them, they would be stopped.

  • KingCranky

Apparently, it hasn’t occurred to Katya or her vile group that the very same tactics they’re using on others-deception, subterfuge, kidnapping, torture-can be just as easily used on them by those they wish to victimize.

That’s one lesson real life teaches on a constant basis, there’s always someone bigger, badder, stronger, faster and smarter than you.

So perhaps one strategy is to let Katya and her merry band of torturers suspect there’s an informer in their midst, say, setting up a meeting where the victim doesn’t show, then claiming they were warned off doing so by someone in her group.

Setting the knuckle-draggers against each other, one way of lessening the damage & danger to innocent victims of these repulsive homophobes.

  • Ninong

John, I believe they say in the BBC video that the victim in this incident was “crafty” and refused to come to the flat, so Vladimir had to go meet him in a public place and then persuade him to come back to the flat. Vladimir went out and managed to talk him into coming back to the flat were his pals were waiting to attack him. They always film the entire event for their personal gratification and “enjoyment,” but they carefully edit it before posting it to VK so that it won’t be taken down.

Both Vladimir and Sergei have been used as “bait” in previous traps. I have seen other video clips with both of them in that role that were probably filmed at least a couple of years ago. Here’s a link to a photo of Ekaterina “Katya” Zigunova with Sergei Samsonov: http://vk.com/zigunovakaterina#/zigunovakaterina?z=photo14570303_314693047%2Falbum14570303_177814744

Don’t you remember the fracas after they aired TALES OF THE CITY back in the 90s? They dropped their plans to do the sequel like a hot rock (and it ended up on Showtime where, typically, it was ruined). PBS executives are afraid of their own shadow, like all bureaucrats everywhere. They will air programs that are pro-gay, like the feeble IN THE LIFE, but not “too gay.”

  • jomicur

It’s amazing how many straights refuse to accept that this is happening and think we’re a bunch of hysterical queens for trying to make it into a major issue. Worse yet, there are gays who say that, too. Over the weekend, I mixed it up with an allegedly clown on another website who kept shrilling that all of this is strictly an internal matter for Russia to deal with, and we are all terribly wrong-headed in making an issue of it. The vehemence with which he argued his viewpoint, and the viciousness with which he attacked anyone, gay or straight, who disagreed with him, struck me as downright pathological. Scum.

I surfed past the Olympics last night. Men’s figure skating was on, and I stopped just long enough to see if they’re actually using Johnny Weir for on-air “analysis.” No sign of him, at least in the two minutes I saw. And that’s probably just as well, because if I’d heard his voice I’d have probably kicked in my TV.

  • FLL

I wish all the history books that are used in American public school systems would describe the KKK activity of past eras as domestic terrorism because that’s what it was. The mainstream media needs to wake up and start calling the current terror campaign in Russia the same thing: domestic terrorism.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Oh, and I don’t have a problem who want to argue that somehow we’re being hypocritical because America is bad too. The problem however is that people who make the charge often kinda sorta hate America and go over the top in the comments about the country, about us, about this blog, etc. Then it stops being a discussion, and ends up a harangue. And we don’t tend to allow those as they don’t tend to help move the discussion forward. But anyone who’s read this blog knows that we let contrary viewspoints remain in the comments. We will however boot you if you’re simply here to cause trouble. So thank you :)

I wish that the LGBT community could organize and retaliate against these terrorist like Katya. I mean they know who they are from watching these videos. The LGBT of Russia will have to form there own army. I would love to see these Nazis get trapped and kidnapped and tortured. I fear after the Olympics is over its going to be open season on the LGBT community. They will reintroduce the law on taking away children of LGBT families for one thing. I fear this will get much worst before it gets better.

  • FLL

Channel 4 in Britain is a public service TV station. I’m so glad they are bringing this campaign of Russian domestic terrorism to light, as well as reporting on the Russian government’s collusion and refusal to prosecute. It’s time for public service TV stations, newspapers and other mainstream media outlets in the U.S. to follow Channel 4’s lead. You’ve been able to influence the discussion in the media before, John, as you did (along with Harvey Fierstein and Dan Savage) when you brought the vodka boycott to the attention of the mainstream media. Please don’t stop reporting on these criminal vigilante groups and the involvement of the Russian government and the Russian Orthodox Church until the mainstream media takes notice. You can truthfully point out to your colleagues in the mainstream media that this is domestic terrorism every bit as much as the activity of the Ku Klux Klan in past eras, and the Russian government’s tacit approval and even support of these groups in Russia is no different than the involvement of Southern states in the violent actions of the KKK during its heyday.

The comment pages of this blog have now accumulated two complaints against you, John, as shown in previous threads. The first complaint—repeated on many, many previous threads—is that your posts about Russia are hypocritical because the actions (or inaction) of American authorities (e.g., in New York) create a similar situation in the United States. That claim would be true only if American authorities refused to prosecute the kind of anti-gay crimes shown in this video. That claim is an obvious lie. Every day, the blogosphere as well as television and print media report on the successful arrest and prosecution of criminals who perpetrate anti-gay attacks in the New York area (and elsewhere in the country). It’s time to put that lie to bed, I think. The second complaint—a very recent one on the previous thread about Putin’s choice of athlete to light the Olympic flame—is that your blog is censoring commenters who claim that your posts about Russia are hypocritical. Based on the sheer number of such comments, I sure haven’t seen evidence of that purported censorship.

“There are certainly some ethical issues surrounding what Channel 4 did.
But it’s an important video, and a necessary one, that might finally
break this long-ignored story wide open.”

Yes, I guess so. The Channel 4 crew must have had to fake (?) acceptance of what the torturers were doing? Eh? And if they have any humanity, I think that they will have to have some counseling and deprogramming? NO?

But I guess that doing this in order to show the time frame of plotting, executing and then exulting after the torture should be enough to get the People angered and possibly officials embarrassed enough to stop this SHITE!

    Ay ay ay….

When actions like this are condoned by a government the perpetrators become more and more emboldened. They don’t care about someone filming them because this is state sponsered violence. Anyone who went to the Sochi Olympics should be shown this video and asked how they can support this. Don’t give me the crap about :”athletes trained so hard” crap. They wouldn’t have been able to train without “our” tax dollars and government support. One can always turn a blind eye to the injustice being perpetrated until the injustice involves them and they cry out for help and expect it. I have not watched a minute of the Olympics and I don’t miss it.
This posting and the pictures are disturbing. I plan on sending this to my senator and congressman and see if they have any feelings. Up to now they have been deaf mutes. Think i will send this to Obama the next time he begs for money.
