Must-see: Pussy Riot, Russian dissident band, forces Stephen Colbert to crack up (video)

Stephen Colbert interviewed the Russian dissident band Pussy Riot last night, and I am blown away at how good these women are.

They did an amazing interview, funny, witty, fearless. Simply amazing. I actually worried that they wouldn’t get Colbert’s humor. Hardly. They cracked him up.

Pussy Riot is a feminist punk band, and they were thrown in jail for two years for having staged an impromptu performance/protest in a Russian church.  They were only released recently, mostly likely as part of a Putin ploy to improve the country’s image before the 2014 Winter Olympics, which are taking place in Sochi, Russia.

The interview was wide-ranging.  They talked about prison, Russia’s anti-gay laws, why they’re here in the US.  The two women were amazing.  I’m just blown away.  Their courage.  Their humor.  Their fearlessness.

STEPHEN COLBERT: What did you do that got your arrested?

PUSSY RIOT: We sang a fun song in a church.

STEPHEN COLBERT: Okay. So you broke the law?

PUSSY RIOT: Yes, and seemingly we broke it many times before that, because we had a lot of fun songs. One of them was called “Putin, piss off.”

STEPHEN COLBERT: Okay, now Vladimir’s a friend. I’m going to edit out anything bad you say about him, I want you to know that, okay?

PUSSY RIOT: It’s okay, we’re making our own taping right now.

STEPHEN COLBERT: All right, well, you will be searched before you leave the building.

PUSSY RIOT: We’ve had two years of practice hiding things from searches.

This was Colbert’s face after that last line:

Then it continues:

STEPHEN COLBERT: What do you have against Vladimir Putin, he’s a strong man, that’s what Russia needs.

PUSSY RIOT: We have different ideas about a bright future, and we don’t want a shirtless man on a horse leading us into that.

Your timeline is completely wrong, Pussy Riot was founded in August 2011, the possibility of US troops going in did not arise until last year when the girls were already in prison.

Khodorkovsky was also in jail on trumped up charges because Putin wanted to steal his money. So an endorsement hardly constituted a vote for oligarchy.

Indeed plenty of native English speaking Americans don’t understand Colbert’s humor. I can certainly imagine a non-native English speaking foreign person being uncertain about Colbert’s deadpan irony at times.

Hawt, they are. I’d do ‘em in a heartbeat. ;-)

Pray for me guys-these young women are sowing seeds of doubt…
Maybe it is a choice after all like mom insisted.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/dameocrat Dameocrat

Sorry I don’t believe a real libertarian socialist would support an oligarch! By all rights they should be apolitical and if they do support someone it should be a lefty not a righty. It has nothing to do with nihilism. It is about paying attention. The American political establishment never met an American feminist, anarchist are gay person that was worthy of support. They only support those things in foreign counties that resist the goals of our political establishment. In this case it is a war in Syria.

I think it’s pretty nihilistic to be so skeptical of people who are trying to move their country in the right direction. You can’t hold them to the standard of American liberals who are able to freely express themselves.

  • pappyvet

I see the strength in their faces. And the comment about not wanting Putin to lead them into the future is as brave for a Russian woman to say as it is uncommon.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/dameocrat Dameocrat

They would probably back the republicans. This is about Syria!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/dameocrat Dameocrat

They endorsed oligarch Mikael Khodorkovsky as president. Just because they oppose Putin doesn’t make them liberals. Their protest conveniently coincided with Putin’s resistance to going to war in Syria. If it weren’t for Putin our guys would be dying there for no reason just like the did in Iraq. They have a name that doesn’t translate to Russian. They were probably a Ned destabilization campaign. It is naive for gays and feminist not to see how we have been used by neocons for some of their war campaigns. http://theredphoenixapl.org/2013/12/27/pussy-riot-says-oligarch-khodorkovsky-should-replace-putin-as-president/

    So amazing! So brave. Wow.

They need them there rather more.

But imagine for the sake of argument that they had the opportunity to work with the song writers and arrangers that made Miley Cirus for a year or two. If they could get the sound right they could be the biggest band on the planet and that is a pretty big platform.

The problem right now is that they have everything in place but the actual music. And they need to be singing in English as well as Russian. If they only record in Russian it will be too easy for Putin and his cronies to cut them off from the market. If they record in English he doesn’t have that leverage.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

With wicked smart, rebellious, outspoken and courageous women like that, no wonder Putin and his fellow oligarchs are terrified of them.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

That’s part of it. They come off as these demure beautiful young women… who then kick you in the balls, repeatedly.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Still, his brand of humor, I can’t imagine that isn’t difficult to understand as a foreigner (ignore the double negative). They’re amazing.

  • Silver_Witch

John – most Russian’s don’t speak English….well that is not very American is it?

Seriously, they are clearly laughing at his words before they are translated…so they must understand some of what he is saying. It was cool to hear Russian and the translations.

to me this just proves the 99% of all nations should be united against the 1% everywhere who are the real problem and the enemy of peace and harmony.

  • http://musephotos.wordpress.com/ GarySFBCN

We all are Pussy Riot. And I hope they defect. We could use them here.

  • cole3244

me too, thanks for the video i will watch the replay again tonight.

colberts reaction was what got me laughing the most, they completely outflanked him on each question, classic

  • http://heimaey.us/ heimaey

Exactly. I fell more in love with them.

  • http://heimaey.us/ heimaey

I can’t get past the fact of how beautiful they both are and how pretty the Russian language is. What a shame everything that’s going on there.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

    I was blown away.

  • cole3244

so many things i want to say.
what amazing young women and courageous to boot, they had colbert at a loss for words which never happens.
i can think of many here i would gladly trade for them to set an example in america of what standing up for what you believe in is all about.

brave, intelligent, and as attractive on the inside as they are on the outside what a combination.

i am now a fan of pussy riot not because of their music or beauty but these gals are the vision of what i hope the future has in store if they are any indication of some of the youth to follow.

by putin releasing them they have already won the argument.
