Billie Jean King’s amazing appearance on Colbert to talk Sochi

Billie Jean King was on the Colbert Report last night to talk about her role with the US delegation to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia, and particularly about Russia’s anti-gay crackdown.

King is openly-gay.

She and Colbert had an amazing back and forth on a wide range of topics, including the possibility that she could get arrested in Sochi for violating Russia’s draconian new anti-gay “propaganda” law. She’s really quite good. And I think she’s going to do a great job over in Sochi.

Billie Jean King on Russia’s anti-gay propaganda laws:

COLBERT: Isn’t your mere existence propaganda for homosexuality because you make it look so good?

BILLIE JEAN KING: I hope so!

On whether she’ll protest at Sochi:

BILLIE JEAN KING: I probably won’t protest, but if the media asks me a question, I’m gonna answer it.

COLBERT: You’ll be breaking the law. If you say something positive about homosexuals or about homosexual rights you’ll be breaking the law. Technically you can be thrown into jail.

BILLIE JEAN KING: Well, I’ll take that chance, I guess.

Colbert and King on it being a choice to be gay:

BILLIE JEAN KING: Well, you’ve had a choice, and you’re straight.

COLBERT: Oh I definitely chose, I chose to be, I had plenty of opportunity to be gay, baby. I had my pick of the litter. Yeah. I believe that’s what they call a group of gay men, a “litter of gay men.”

BILLIE JEAN KING: But you have such twinkly brown eyes, I bet they work pretty well.

King on being chosen for the US delegation in part because she’s gay:

COLBERT: You’re not offended that you’re being chosen because you’re gay?

BILLIE JEAN KING: No, I’m proud of it, I LOVE it!

Billie Jean is so brave and will not back down from a verbal battle with ANYONE. She also uses humor to her point accross, which is extremely refreshing. I’m sure that she would love to meet up with Czar Putin directly and educate him about his views, carefully explaining to him why his views are wrong and predjudcial. Billie risks arrest in Sochi, but I do not think that she will be because she now represents the majority view and is such an influential figure regarding this critical civil rights issue. She represents the view point of the majority of the world. She will definitely get her point accross for the good old US of A, one way or another. God Bless You, Billie Jean.

He is a silly little ass, isn’t he. Long-term laryngitis would be suitable.

I have great respect and admiration for Ms. King, and it’s clear that Stephen and his audience do as well. I wish her well on her trip to Russia and know that she’ll do us all proud.

Very true – probably the best pure volleyer the game has ever seen, men or women.

    Definitely! And a keen wit!

I’m a bit sorry for everyone too young to remember her tennis game back when she was in her prime. She was very, very good, and a joy to watch.

What she did for women’s tennis, way back then, is enough to earn her hero’s stripes, even before all the good she’s done since for tennis, for women’s sports generally, and, of course, for equality.

I’ve been a big fan and admirer for decades now, and she continues to amaze me with all she does. Thank you, Billie Jean!

It helps to have a healthy sense of humor. And she does.

Never, ever mess with an old lesbian. You will never win. You may be hurt.

Having said that I hope Vladimir tries to pick a fight with her.

How long before Johnny Weir blasts her in public? While wearing his darling little Russian army uniform, of course.

    I love it!
