Billie Jean King was on the Colbert Report last night to talk about her role with the US delegation to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia, and particularly about Russia’s anti-gay crackdown.
King is openly-gay.
She and Colbert had an amazing back and forth on a wide range of topics, including the possibility that she could get arrested in Sochi for violating Russia’s draconian new anti-gay “propaganda” law. She’s really quite good. And I think she’s going to do a great job over in Sochi.
Billie Jean King on Russia’s anti-gay propaganda laws:
COLBERT: Isn’t your mere existence propaganda for homosexuality because you make it look so good?
BILLIE JEAN KING: I hope so!
On whether she’ll protest at Sochi:
BILLIE JEAN KING: I probably won’t protest, but if the media asks me a question, I’m gonna answer it.
COLBERT: You’ll be breaking the law. If you say something positive about homosexuals or about homosexual rights you’ll be breaking the law. Technically you can be thrown into jail.
BILLIE JEAN KING: Well, I’ll take that chance, I guess.
Colbert and King on it being a choice to be gay:
BILLIE JEAN KING: Well, you’ve had a choice, and you’re straight.
COLBERT: Oh I definitely chose, I chose to be, I had plenty of opportunity to be gay, baby. I had my pick of the litter. Yeah. I believe that’s what they call a group of gay men, a “litter of gay men.”
BILLIE JEAN KING: But you have such twinkly brown eyes, I bet they work pretty well.
King on being chosen for the US delegation in part because she’s gay:
COLBERT: You’re not offended that you’re being chosen because you’re gay?
BILLIE JEAN KING: No, I’m proud of it, I LOVE it!
