Dan Savage has no respect for child-raping Catholic priests

Conservative anti-gay Catholics are upset with writer, advice columnist, and gay rights advocate Dan Savage for disparaging pedophile priests the other day on the Bill Maher show.

Dan referred to the child rapists as “kiddie f—ing priests,” which caused Catholic League head Bill Donohue to demand that Maher’s show be canceled.

Because, you know, who in their right mind would criticize grown men who rape 5 year olds?

Dan-Savage-Bill-Maher

Maher was asking Dan about a Catholic bishop in Hawaii who claimed, absurdly, that children of gay parents will end up killing themselves.

Honolulu bishop Larry Silva wrote in a letter that “children will be the greatest casualties [if same-sex marriage were legalized in Hawaii - and it was, the marriages began this morning at midnight Hawaii time, 5am Eastern], in that they will be deprived of being raised in a loving home by a mother and a father who loves them and whose love cooperated with God’s plan in creating them.”

Silva added, “when children are deprived of such a home, there will be more poverty, more social ills, more juvenile suicides, and more problems than we can imagine.”

Silva is of course wrong, and Civil Beat did a great job hunting down the scientific proof.

Dan Savage, God bless him, was having none of Silva’s bs:

He’s confusing children with gay parents with children who were raped by Catholic priests….

I hate to go there, but they don’t have the moral high ground when they talk about the welfare and safety of children, they just don’t….

Dan went on to note the Illinois Catholic bishop who held an exorcism on the day the new gay marriage law was signed in the state, since the bishop claims that gay marriage is inspired by the devil.

Dan added that it was interesting that the Illinois bishop didn’t bother having any exorcisms for the demons of “kiddie-f—ing Catholic priests.”

That’s what set Donohue off.

Which of course begs the question of with how much respect exactly one should refer to grown men who rape children.

Donohue’s suggestion that it’s “anti-Catholic” to disparage pedophilia – no, let’s be more accurate – that it’s anti-Catholic to refer to Catholic pedophiles in a disparaging way, only goes to prove Dan’s point: The leadership of the Catholic church simply has not come to terms with the gravity of its own crimes.

The windmills that he duels continue to slap him down; the man is a joke and now a sideshow.

There should be no statute of limitations for these bastards. They should all be hunted down when they prey on innocent children and are protected by such a powerful institution such as this powerful church. Cardinal Law is still hiding in the Vatican walls from being questioned by Boston authorities. He will never set foot on US soil again. He knows better.

Before bishop SILVA of Hawaii, there was a bishop named Joseph Ferrerio.. Ferrerio was a rapist bishop. He raped the son of his housekeeper. David Figueroa. David Figueroa was also raped by several other catholic priests in Hawaii along with bishop ferrerio.. Davids mother had something like 7 or more children and was a single parent (because of domestic violence).. David, the victim of the Hawaii catholic bishop and other Hawaii priest went on to become a prostitute and eventually died of HIV Aids….before HE DIED HE AND HIS MOTHER TRIED TO GET COMPENSATION for the crimes of the bishop and priests.. they hid behind the statute of limitations.. I think I read bishop ferrerio gave them 300 dollars…The past 6 years here on Oahu.. I have personally been involved in trying to remove the Statute of limitations on child sex abuse..The biggest opponent has been Bishop Larry SIlva and his catholic lobby.. Bishop Silva has to be totally insane to say what he did..

While some may argue with some of what Dan says on occasion, he is absolutely right on this.

The RCC has not come to terms with its many sins, and made no effort toward proper “penance”, to use a term with which they may be familiar.

Donohue is getting to be a joke, his incessant whining about how “injured” the RCC is can’t be taken seriously. This is a tax-exempt organization that has had free reign for many, many years. They’ve broken laws, fleeced people and have been involved in all sorts of nefarious things. We’re supposed to feel sorry for them, to think of them as a victim when someone points out the truth?

    I don’t think so.

It all depends on whether the victims of the clerical rape were male or female. If female, then that’s apparently not so bad. Remember Bishop Fernando Lugo of Paraguay? He ran for and was elected president of Paraguay. After previously refusing to grant him laicization, the Vatican finally relented, but only after he had already been elected to the political office of president of a country.

Shortly thereafter, it became public that he had fathered a son out of wedlock with a young woman he had been sexually involved with since she was a 16-yr-old girl. He admitted that paternity. Then another woman came forward to claim he had fathered her child. Apparently she was upset to learn that she wasn’t his only girlfriend. I don’t remember how many were proven but he admitted paternity of one son and admitted being sexually active with other women, including the second woman who came forward. Paraguayans began calling him the father of all Paraguayans.

He was president of Paraguay from 2008 to 2012. He was impeached in 2012 but it had nothing to do with his personal life. It was more a political coup.

It was the Dutch Catholic Church that was accused of surgically castrating at least 11 boys in their care at a boarding school in the 1950′s. The last one was 18 years old at the time of his castration in 1958, which was performed to “cure” him shortly after he reported to the local authorities that he had been raped for years by priests at the boarding school. His name was Henk Hethuis. He died two years later in a car crash.

That’s not the only documented investigation that has been published involving clerical sexual abuse by Catholic clergy of children and teens in their care. The Irish Catholic Church was one of the worst!

They were still castrating boys to “cure” them when I was 20 years old. They said homosexuality was a sin and a disease that had to be “cured.” In the US, as far as I know, the “cure” was limited to psychological brainwashing by a Catholic psychiatrist. The Vatican still calls homosexual acts “intrinsically disordered” and a “sin” but at the same time they say they “love” gay people — make that “chaste” gay people. Their term, not mine.

Not just Catholics. I was raised in a strong Methodist/Southern Baptist household. While my mom was a bit more lenient, her sisters who were both evangelical Baptists literally gave me nightmares when they took me to their respective churches. It took me what seemed forever to get over any guilt I had about just being me.

  • cole3244

good for you i know it was a hard thing to do.
i was raised catholic but i became an atheist in 1963 when in boot camp, i was 17 but i thought this is a bunch of nonsense and i haven’t looked back or regretted it one bit.
the world would be a better place without any religion especially with the charlatans that are drawn to it for all the wrong reasons.
    thanks for your thoughts.

Sociopaths don’t know they’re doing anything wrong.

Donahue is indeed a laughing stock—an alcoholic, divorced, mean tempered cracked-pot with disillusions of grandeur, who thinks he embodies the best values of the church. —Actually, he’s not far off.

  • http://adgitadiaries.com/ karmanot

Yep, and channeled the worst of the mass murders to havens in South America with Vatican visas.

  • nicho

And let’s not forget the Roman church’s love for the Nazis — to the point where the previous pope actually belonged to a Nazi organization.

If they’re throwing out smokescreens, no one will question their own morality. They always need to create a distraction…make sure the focus is never on them.

You can’t put the blame on just the pedophiles. What’s particularly deplorable about the church is that they knew about the crimes, but covered them up. If a football coach covered up for his team’s illegal behavior, he’d be sacked. Why doesn’t that happen in the church? Arbitrating morality is a scary thing – it gives people absolute power. I was born and raised Catholic. It is difficult to leave. The brainwashing is intense.

I finally had the courage to do it and it was the result of people like you (and Dan Savage and this blogger). They refused to respect this choice I was making, which was inconsistent with my value system. They still loved and supported me, but could not approve of the fact that I chose to remain inside a backward, repressive cult.

Keep talking this kind of truth. You are actually doing brainwashed Catholics a favor. Eventually, more will find a way out, and at least refuse to indoctrinate their children.

  • trinu

Or the fact that they castrated one of the boys who reported them (in either Belgium or the Netherlands, I can’t remember which).

  • http://adgitadiaries.com/ karmanot

Exactly, the Catholic Church has been heresy since the 4th century.

I long for the day Mr. god cancels Bill Donohue and Bishop Silva.

    Remember: It’s always projection.

The casualties aren’t the children of gay parents. The legitimate scientific research has indicated if anything these kids do better than the norm because on average, these children are almost never unplanned or unwanted.

The casualties — the suicides, the homeless, the broken ones — are the LGBTQ children of straight, fundamentalist parents who decide that bigotry motivated by a Bronze Age culture is preferable to doing their parental duties and simply loving their kids, no matter how they turn out.

  • cole3244

imo opinion anyone that supports or belongs to the catholic cult has moral and integrity problems or they are child molesters themselves, which is it followers.

  • mf_roe

Religions, ALL RELIGIONS, are Faith based belief systems. Since Faith disregards the need for Proof these systems are completely flexible. The only real requirement is that a sufficient number of followers want something to be true. Most Catholics don’t condone pedophilia but they are so desperate to believe the rest of the teachings of the church they just pretend that it is not happening.

We all have a belief system, science, rationalism, democracy ALL require that the followers believe the principles that define the system. Religion denies the possibility that it can be wrong and effectively condemns itself to perversion by those who choose to manipulate the teachings to purposes outside of the stated values. Belief systems that do accept challenge and revision can be perverted as well, but there is a mechanism to correct errors if you accept the reality of error. Science has often been wrong, sometimes spectacularly so. But science submits to trial of fact and tends to correct itself and strengthened its claims. By refusal to correct flawed Dogma Religion insures a downward spiral of ever increasing manipulation by those who see Religion as a path to power.

  • lainnj

I’m glad to see people losing respect for pedophiles, and for the Catholic Church which continues to cover up their crimes. Good for Dan Savage.

  • slappymagoo

“Dan added that it was interesting that the Illinois bishop didn’t bother
having any exorcisms for the demons of ‘kiddie-f—ing Catholic priests.’”

Maybe if those priests tried marrying their victims, there would have been an exorcism or other such outrage. Thank goodness those priests had the good taste to just keep it to raping children. Otherwise it might have become quite the scandal.

  • keirmeister

Excellent quote! I was thinking more in terms of “This is how we beat them, this is how we win.”

  • http://www.americablog.com/ Naja pallida

You don’t need to go to a fictional President for such a thing.

Harry S. Truman’s “I don’t give them Hell. I just tell the truth about them and they think it’s Hell.” is a little of something we could use from everyone, from pundits, to reporters, to politicians.

  • cold340t

If the Priest’s would keep their privates away from kids’, well, maybe, no A pedophile is a pedophile. I walk by homeless men on the street, and I know how.why and who drove them here. The f*&*^%ng Priest at the Rectory on Chabot rd. I was taken their to be a victim by a friend (victim). The Pedo saw I was not a mark, and chewed out his recruiter for bringing me unannounced. I still haven’t forgotten the look on his face when he saw, me, The neighborhood cops son. Priceless!!!!! I was 10. My friends, his victims haven’t faired so well since. You can see them panhandling around the city. Church protects Peds! Period, Fact!

  • fletcher

Donahue has become a joke by his going off in indignant froths raising trivial things into big anti-Catholic conspiracies. He once accused Time Magazine of anti-Catholic bigotry because an article that was highly favorable to religion contained five paragraphs of quotes from an atheist who argued there was no archeological proof of anything in the Bible. And despite those comments being followed by nine paragraphs from archeologists saying there was proof. But Donahue isn’t alone. New York Cardinal Tim Dolan was recently quoted as saying that the trend favoring gay marriage and civil unions was getting traction only because the gay community has engaged in “better marketing.” If it is marketing then Donahue and Dolan are getting their advice from J Walter Schmuck.

  • nicho

And let’s not forget the case in Springfield, MA, in which the bishop prevailed on the DA to drop the investigation into the murder of a 10-year-old altar boy. The one and only suspect was and is a known pedophile priest.

  • Bill_Perdue

Exactly. The roman cult is an international criminal conspiracy to abet and enable the sexual abuse of children.

  • keirmeister

Dan Savage did exactly what Democrats need to do more: do not accept Right Wing premises, do not accept being lectured to by people who are always wrong, and throw their crap right back in their faces so that they can’t escape it.

As President Bartlett tells Tobey, “That’s how I beat him.”

  • http://parkandbark.wordpress.com/ Houndentenor

If they had been school teachers instead of priests and if those bishops had been school superintendents or state education officials, they’d ALL be in jail now. They got away with heinous crimes by hiding behind their religion. And it’s not as if this is a freedom of religion issue. Their religion doesn’t teach them to do this. They used their religion to hide and escape justice and other Catholics enabled them in doing so. I have no respect for any of them. I have Catholic friends but I have to admit that I think less of them for continuing to attend and support their church.

  • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Gee Dan, don’t be so honest next time.

  • http://voenixrising.com/ Mark Alexander

I have more respect for Dan Savage than I’ll ever have for a thousand kiddie-raping Catholic priests.

  • ronbo

What can you add to this obvious truth? I say that Donohue should be indicted for knowingly creating and contributing to an environment encouraging illegal acts of organized crime against children and their parents.
