Duck Dynasty toy clock appears to say “Heil Hitler”

In a rather odd trip to Walmart last night (it was mom’s idea), my family was in the “holiday” section looking through half-priced Christmas leftovers when my 17 year old nephew walks up holding a “Duck Dynasty ‘Si’ Clock.”  He pushes the button, and asks me what I think it’s saying.

I thought he’d asked me “who” it sounded like, and told him I didn’t know. No, he said, WHAT’s it SAYING?

My mom and my other nephew, before I could even answer, both respond: “Heil Hitler.”

Mom was so convinced that the toy was saying “Heil Hitler” that I had to explain to her that it was likely (well hopefully likely) that the toy manufacturer did not intend to have the Duck Dynasty clock honor the Führer. Still, it was awfully weird. And the timing couldn’t have been worse.

Duck Dynasty is a reality show on A&E that has been in some hot water lately for the racist, sexist and homophobic words of one of its stars, Phil Robertson.

duck-dynasty-clock-large

Now, I have a hard time believing that A&E intentionally created a Duck Dynasty clock that says “Heil Hitler,” but I can tell you that four of us there in Walmart last night, including my 84 year old mom, couldn’t figure out what the clock could be saying, OTHER than “Heil Hitler.”

Here’s a video I took of the Aryan timepiece. You can make up your own mind.

I was talking with Mike Signorile last night about the whole Duck Dynasty brouhaha, and how the largest American gay rights group, the Human Rights Campaign, appears to have given Duck Dynasty’s Robertson a pass on his homophobia simply because A&E has promised to run some public service announcements about tolerance during the TV show.

The problem for HRC is that even if one accepts that homophobia is somehow okay if it’s cloaked in the Bible (which is what Robertson’s defenders are claiming), that doesn’t really answer the question of why it was also acceptable for Robertson to promote racism and sexism. Does the Bible excuse that bigotry as well?

The sexism charge is based on Robertson’s earlier comments that men should marry 15 year old girls because they’re easier to mold, or something:

Robertson’s racial comments are even more disturbing, and have not received an adequate explanation from either A&E or civil rights groups like HRC that are now providing cover for Robertson’s racism.  Here’s what Robertson recently told GQ:

Phil On Growing Up in Pre-Civil-Rights-Era Louisiana
“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field…. They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!… Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”

Many interpret Robertson’s comments as suggesting that African-Americans had it better, were happier, godlier, before the Civil Rights era came along.  And that “entitlements” and “welfare” somehow ruined blacks.  It’s a popular, and racist, point of view in some uber-conservative circles.

And regardless of whether you believe that the Bible somehow exonerates Robertson’s homophobia, no one in their right mind would claim that the Bible justifies racism (many still use the Bible to justify sexism, but not racism).

So I’m confused about how Robertson has suddenly been let off the hook – why he was suddenly unsuspended by A&E – when he hasn’t adequately explained why he thinks African-Americans were better off during segregation.  When A&E answers that question adequately, then we’ll talk.

I think the issue people has is his general cluelessness about the experience of people who are not like him. I worked in rural NE Louisiana near Monroe (his home turf) in 2010-2011, and *I* witnessed disparaging treatment of blacks by whites who loved in the area. It was like going back in time in some ways.

His comments about gay people, not just with GQ but in sermons he has delivered over the years, is nothing short of appalling. And now his comments about 15-year old girls being marriage material which somehow the mainstream media refuse to pick up, likely out of business concern over a backlash.

He worked the same fields as the blacks, indians and other whites. He said there was no mistreatment of black people. I am assuming that denying mistreatment of blacks is now racism? Even when there is no evidence, in his opinion, of any mistreatment? So you basically want him to lie and not be racist, or be racist LOL? Do you remember how everyone who said global warming was BS was called well…a lot of bad words :) turns out they were right. So maybe Phil is right. Maybe there wasn’t any mistreatment of blacks around him on that cotton farm. Wouldn’t that be a great thing?

But you assume, with no evidence, that he is a liar. That he must be lying. Why do libs always assume the worst in people? Maybe they still cling on to their past racist pro slavery democratic past and just can’t let it go?

  • Imogen Parry

WHAT IT ACTUALLY SAYS: “Hey, it’s on like bing bong, Jack.” And you are hearing the words “Hey, it’s” And then you are trying to say that that, is somehow “Heil Hitler” in a desperate attempt to link a popular TV show, loved by lots of lovely Americans, as somehow racist or evil in some way! Even if it was, wouldn’t the viewers have found out by now? Oh that’s right! You know better than they do! LOL libs.

You won’t see pro journalist John Aravosis correct his misleading article that paints people as Nazi’s, because painting people you don’t like as Nazi’s is totally OK – right John?

At some other blogs, Phil Robertson’s suggestion about 15-year-old girls is getting him branded as a pedophile. And he was so eager to point at us. As my grandmother used to say, whenever you point an accusation at somebody, three other fingers are pointing back at yourself.

HRC’s consistent policy of appeasement allows/guarantees oppression. They are a “corporate” organization that has actually slowed progress (it extends their income over more quarters). I just watched a fantastic PBS documentary about ACT UP and I continue to stand pat on my theory that there is a specific time to speak up and NOT to allow or be abused. That time is now and ALWAYS.

One family member said they watch DD because it “makes me feel smarter than than a millionaire”. I responded, “I also like to feel smart; but, that’s why I DON’T watch the show.” It got a round of laughs.

Security for the Olympics was always going to come primarily from Russian military sources. The state police have lots of manpower, but their training emphasis is on law enforcement, not intelligence gathering, general security, nor large-scale crowd control. Plus, the region of Sochi has been pretty heavily militarized for many years, given the Chechen and Georgian issues.

Finding 15 year old girls to marry, having a doll that says, “Heil Hitler,” and being obnoxiously bigoted are truly the markings of a fine, upstanding “Thank you, Jeeezus” Christian family! No wonder people are giving up religion and the church!

I could say the same thing about an inexplicably popular franchise of greasy chicken sandwiches.

It’s a bright light thing, drawing attention on who is being actively rewarded and enriched despite being a racist bigot, anti-gay homophobe, and borderline pedophillic patriarchist-misogynist.

People have every right to be despicable douche-nozzles. But there should be a social and economic downside to it.

  • http://www.americablog.com/ Naja pallida

I’m confused why we’re still talking about this asshat, and grasping at straws for more to complain about. He’s one random bigot, on one random show, that will be gone the moment they’re no longer drawing the ratings to keep their corporate masters happy with money. There are whole networks dedicated to defending ignorance and bigotry. We need to be looking further up the food chain, and look for the people who actually matter who are condoning this kind of crap.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

Isn’t that how this often goes though? The ‘fans’ of the show have some notion that Robertson and his family are as they’re portrayed: Real-life ‘Beverly Hillbillies.’ Just as charming and folksy but, y’know, REAL. But as we’ve learned, the so-called ‘reality’ show is anything but, and these people are not real at all.

Yeah, the family patriarch grew up poor, uneducated, and backwoods pig-ignorant — not to mention having absorbed all kinds of retrograde prejudices and notions that might’ve been seen as relatively mainstream in certain parts of the country, oh, half a century ago. Not today though.

But then he got lucky with his duck calls, got rich, and his kids promptly turned into full-on Yuppies. But for the sake of the fake reality show — and more money — the already spoiled rich kids and other family members put on their hillbilly personas and clothes, and the men all grew beards because — I dunno, makes ‘em look less civilized or something?

We should be surprised then when we learn the only authentic backwoods type among them is Robertson himself? Or coming from that particular insular and somewhat xenophobic culture doesn’t actually make one charming, folksy, kind-hearted and relatively open-minded like the Clampetts were made out to be? Or how homophobia, misogyny, and racism found fertile ground in a man like him?

So he hates gays — although as ever among anti-gay bigots, he seems especially to object to gay men. Lesbians might as well not exist. But hey, that comes as no surprise, because Robertson doesn’t see women as humans deserving of autonomy and respect, but as ‘girls’ to be captured young and early, trained and broken to service, much like a clever dog. (Makes me wonder if we’d hear something equally shocking from him if asked his opinion about ‘corrective rape.’)

And of course being a man incapable of seeing the world through any eyes or walking in any shoes but his own, he’ll just assume that African Americans don’t mind their status as always “not as good as whites” — since he’ll have been brought up to believe that’s just how it is. I already know this attitude well, having grown up in a family well acquainted with casual bigotry that one of the usual coping mechanisms of being “as low as dirt” in the social status pecking order is being taught to pay attention to who exactly is presumed to be lower still.

It takes a conscious effort to reject these lessons of hate. To be open minded and always to hold suspect any assertion, “Those people aren’t as good as you.” Or worse, “They don’t think or feel like we do.”

Not everybody makes the effort. Robertson clearly didn’t. The false superiority and self-satisfaction of bigotry is always easier. Plus it always provides convenient scapegoats for one’s own failures and shortcomings as a human being.

The saddest thing of all isn’t how there will be millions of Americans out there who will defend Robertson and his phony clan of pretend backwoods yokels or their even more phony ‘reality’ TV show. The saddest thing is how many have no problem at all with what Robertson believes and says.

I can’t see any way that any activism or trying to go for help to LGBT-Friendly nations will end well. Methinks any military action taken against Equality Advocates will be swept under the media’s rug in support of Russian Nationalism.

  • jomicur

Or maybe HRC has decided, as I have, that this whole kerfuffle is nothing but a huge publicity stunt by A&E to build the show’s ratings (it worked, at least in the short term, for Chick-Fil-A, right?), and that buying into it would only generate more publicity for the show. I don’t doubt that Phil Robertson and his clan are every bit as scummy as they seem–and they’re damn proud of it. But I also don’t doubt that A&E knew that when they created the series, and that they were counting on that to rope in more rubes. I’ve been quite highly critical HRC on a lot of issues, but I just can’t get worked up about this one.

Just another instance of the utter emptiness and aridity of American Bible-belt culture. Look at all the things that right-wing Bible-bashers defend and support most fervently, all of creations that they praise as exemplars of the “values” they purport to hold, and they’re all trash, all of them. This is the world that the fundies want to inhabit and protect from all corrupting influences, a world where all music is top-40 country, where all books have a lily-white Jesus on the cover, where all restaurants are Chick-Fil-As, where all shops are Walmarts and all entertainment must be about either God or guns.

And they imagine that they are the pinnacle of human civilization! All the majesty and tragedy of countless years of human endeavor, in their eyes, has been merely preparation for the advent of the Lord’s chosen people, eating greasy assembly-line food at the Lord’s chosen eatery and watching a fake backwoods hunter talking trash on the Lord’s chosen reality show.

Where is the outrage about Phil Robertson saying you should marry girls when they are 15? The fundamentalists had a tizzy years ago when some singer (I believe it was Jerry Lee Lewis) married his teenage cousin and gave her a doll as a wedding present. I guess its because Phil likes that good old all-American country music and not that sinful rock music that the rest of the world identifies as true American music.

  • emjayay

Of course what Jesus was about was replacing all the old rules and stories with a much more modern approach and view of things. Christianists don’t like the actual message of the guy they love so much, and prefer to pick out bits of the old stuff that fits their program instead.

Jesus’ message of compassion and love does NOT excuse reasoning hate through scripture.
“Love your neighbor as YOU would have your neighbor love you in return”

THAT is a message of understanding and compassion with a touch of humility.
No where did Jesus prescribe segregating and isolating people base on cultural or religious reasons. And nowhere did Jesus advocate bigotry toward the “undesirables”. That is a device of mankind… NOT of Christ.

  • timncguy

The reason this ended the way it did is because the African American community didn’t get “up in arms” about the racist portions of Robertson’s comments. The racist parts of his comments were barely discussed in the media. Everyone knows it is still acceptable to hate on gays. But, no way you get away with hating on African Americans if that community calls you out on it.

Just compare what happened to comedian Michael Richards when he made disparaging comments about blacks in a stage show. He was done with. It took him 7 years to get back on TV on a barely seen cable show.

And, what happened when Tracy Morgan said he would kill a gay son in his stage show? He got a slap on the wrist and continued to be employed on a highly rated network TV show.

There is a justification in the bible for racism, blacks are the descendants of Hamm and therefore meant to spend their lives in servitude for repentance. There is a big difference between the simple right of Freedom of Speech and Hate presented as phony reality mass entertainment. I live in France, I have freedom of speech and I can believe anything I want, but this utter crap could not be on French television. We do have laws about racist and homophobic hate speech here. It is not a debate when the two sides aren’t even talking about the same thing, unfortunately, that is the case so often in America. It’s all about hype with out logic or substance.

The most disgusting part of the whole Phil Robertson brouhaha is not the racism… nor the misogyny… nor the homophobia… nor even the spineless greed of A&E. It’s the fact that a large chunk of the American population consider this show to be an important part of their lives.
