Catholic bishop of Springfield, IL to do “exorcism” on day governor signs gay marriage bill

The Catholic bishop of Springfield, Illinois has announced that he will conduct an exorcism on the day that Illinois officially legalizes gay marriages, since “same-sex ‘marriage’ comes from the devil.”

Illinois just passed legislation last week legalizes gay unions.

Marriages in the state won’t begin until June 1, 2014, but the legislation is going to be signed by the governor on November 20, 2013, and that’s when Bishop Thomas John Paprocki plans to exorcise the devil from Illinois, its governor, its legislature, gay people, or someone.

Bishop Thomas John Paprocki

Bishop Thomas John Paprocki

The bishop is clearly freaked out that a number of Catholic legislators quoted Pope Francis’ recently words of tolerance about gay people in justifying their votes in favor of legalizing gay marriages in the state.

So the bishop thought it would be a neat idea to wrap his exorcism in the name of the Pope, who I’m sure is going to be thrilled to have his name attached to this farce.

Here’s the statement from the bishop, it’s a piece of work:

Bishop Thomas John Paprocki to Offer “Prayers of Supplication and Exorcism in Reparation for the Sin of Same-sex Marriage”

SPRINGFIELD — Scheduled for approximately the same time that Gov. Pat Quinn signs into Illinois law the redefinition of civil marriage, Bishop Thomas John Paprocki will offer “Prayers of Supplication and Exorcism in Reparation for the Sin of Same-Sex Marriage” at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Sixth and Lawrence streets in Springfield, on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m. Clergy, religious and laity are invited to attend.

The context for this prayer service may be understood by recalling the words of Pope Francis when he faced a similar situation as Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 2010,” Bishop Paprocki said.

Regarding the proposed redefinition of civil marriage in Argentina, then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio wrote on June 22, 2010: “The Argentine people must face, in the next few weeks, a situation whose result may gravely harm the family. It is the bill on matrimony of persons of the same sex. The identity of the family, and its survival, are in jeopardy here: father, mother, and children. The life of so many children who will be discriminated beforehand due to the lack of human maturity that God willed them to have with a father and a mother is in jeopardy. At stake is the total rejection of God’s law engraved in our hearts. … Let us not be naive: it is not a simple political struggle; it is an intention [which is] destructive of the plan of God. It is not a mere legislative project (this is a mere instrument), but rather a ‘move’ of the father of lies who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God.”

Bishop Paprocki noted, “The pope’s reference to the ‘father of lies’ comes from the Gospel of John (8:44), where Jesus refers to the devil as ‘a liar and the father of lies.’ So Pope Francis is saying that same-sex ‘marriage’ comes from the devil and should be condemned as such.”

The prayers for “Supplication and Exorcism Which May Be Used in Particular Circumstances of the Church” are taken from the Appendices to the 2004 Latin edition of the Rite of Exorcism, the introduction to which explains, “The presence of the Devil and other demons appears and exists not only in the tempting or tormenting of persons, but also in the penetration of things and places in a certain manner by their activity, and in various forms of opposition to and persecution of the church. If the diocesan bishop, in particular situations, judges it appropriate to announce gatherings of the faithful for prayer, under the leadership and direction of a priest, elements for arranging a rite of supplication may be taken from [the texts provided in these appendices].”

Bishop Paprocki said that since same-sex marriage is contrary to the plan of God (see Genesis 1:27 and 2:24, Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-9), those who contract civil same-sex marriage are culpable of serious sin. He also noted that politicians who enacted civil same-sex marriage legislation are “morally complicit as co-operators in facilitating this grave sin.”

“It is scandalous that so many Catholic politicians are responsible for enabling the passage of this legislation and even twisting the words of the pope to rationalize their actions despite the clear teaching of the church,” he said. “All politicians now have the moral obligation to work for the repeal of this sinful and objectionable legislation. We must pray for deliverance from this evil which has penetrated our state and our church.”

Bishop Paprocki concluded, “Pope Francis has also urged us to be mindful of God’s mercy, so it is good to recall the profound expression of divine mercy uttered by Jesus as he was dying on the cross to save us from our sins, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do’ (Luke 23:34).”

The Catholic Diocese of Springfield in Illinois is 130 parishes in 28 counties in central Illinois.

Bishop Paprocki recently banned Catholics from praying in favor of gay marriage, and said that he will kick anyone out of church who prays in favor of gay marriage.

Oh, and here’s a surprise – there are allegations of child sexual abuse in Paprocki’s diocese. Perhaps he should be focusing his energies on saving the children from his brethren, but that would be like expecting the scorpion not to sting the frog.

Good job, Bishop Paprocki, we’re proud of you!!

Paprocki was a priest of the archdiocese of Chicago. In 2003 he was appointed as an auxiliary bishop of Chicago and in 2010 was appointed by Pope Benedict as the bishop of Springfield in Illinois.

The fear mongering statements being made by isolated Catholic leaders regarding the use of Exorcisms and denial of the Eucharist is an indictment of their personal and psychological
disconnections with their vocations to witness the Gospel and their sacramental obligations to embrace the historical Catholic teachings of Social Justice and Peace. The specific threat of the Rite
of Exorcism demeans the purpose of the Rite and makes of mockery of the Rite and of the office of the Episcopacy.

This is not what Catholicism is about and I apologize for what has happened.

….it’s the first church service I’ve heard of where everyone attending must bring a mop!

…and come June, 2014, we will have objective evidence of the irrelevance of the Catholic Church!

He should forget this and try exorcising the demon of pedophilia instead. It’ll be just as effective (meaning it will have no effect), but will definitely be more constructive. But he’s not going to do that.

Check out rule #8 for exorcisms: “at the same time, an exorcism should never turn into a “show” for the faithful. For that reason, media representatives and journalists must not be allowed to attend. The success or failure of an exorcism is not to be announced or published.” http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?recnum=2824

The justification, the acceptance, the legality, of gay marriage is founded on the belief of freedom of rights / equality of rights.

The belief that it is right to be free to worship ‘any god’, known as freedom of religions, is also founded on the same belief of freedom / equality of self-rights.

The RCC / ‘pope Francis’ / Jorge Bergoglio has confessed that freedom of religions / freedom of rights is just and good.

…therefore the RCC worships and lives by the same way of life as those who believe that gay marriage is right….they both worship FREEDOM of self-rights.

…they both believe that it is RIGHT to serve and magnify oneself (XES).

If enough Catholics in Illinois complained to the Archbishop of Chicago, Francis Cardinal George, about Bishop Paprocki’s planned publicity stunt, maybe Cardinal George would order him to call it off?

The Diocese of Springfield in Illinois is one of the six dioceses of the Metropolitan Province of Chicago. The metropolitan bishop of Springfield in Illinois is the Archbishop of Chicago. The Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield is Thomas J. Paprocki. He was formerly one of Cardinal George’s auxillary bishops in Chicago.

In other words, all of Illinois is under the jurisdiction of the Ecclesiastical Province of Chicago, making Cardinal George the provincial superior of Bishop Paprocki.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

The 1999 revision to the official Rite of Exorcism allows any local Bishop to authorize it. And the 2004 revision allows ‘places’ to be exorcised, rather than just people.

However, Bishop Paprocki is committing a heresy by holding an exorcism as a public event. The rules still clearly state that exorcisms are supposed to be done quietly, with a minimum of public attention and absolutely no media coverage.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

Even though the 2004 addendum to the Latin rite of Excommunication was amended to include ‘place’ as well as person for potential exorcism, one thing did not change: The rule stating unambiguously that any exorcism performed is supposed to be done quietly, with a minimum of public exposure, and no media attention or spectacle.

Thus making Bishop Paprocki’s intended exorcism rite an act of Catholic heresy.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuAyvo9JCmg Ritorna Vincitor

So on the day that gays start marrying in Illinois, some Catholics are going to stand around sprinkling holy water and mumbling in Latin. Too funny! Honestly, if they want to stand around mumbling prayers, why not pray for the victims of priestly sexual abuse? According to bishopaccountability.org, the six diocese of Illinois have contributed 211 priests to the Catholic Church’s list of abusers. And if you’re going to quote Christ on the cross, for heaven’s sake be aware that the bible can’t even agree with itself on what he supposedly said.

Matthew 27:46,50: “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?’ that is to say, ‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?’ …Jesus, when he cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.”

Luke 23:46: “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, ‘Father, unto thy hands I commend my spirit:’ and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.”

John 19:30: “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, ‘It is finished:’ and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

Hello, to all who read this….

On November 20th, in Tucson Arizona, a Shamanic Ceremony will be held to bring no power to Bishop Thomas Paprocki’s exorcism (being held without consent of those just married) of those of the same sex who have gotten married. At the Ceremony, Shaman, Peter Deane, of Chicago Illinois (attended St. Denis School on Chicago’s Southwest Side) will also be offering un-baptisms. To participate in ceremony please contact me at [email protected].

You need not want to get un-baptized to participate in the Ceremony to nullify the Bishop’s Ceremony. But those that want to be un-baptized will be unbaptized after Ceremony of Exorcism Nullification….

    My Bio

I have always been a Shaman but the Catholic Church tried to cover this up during the time I was raised in the church. I have many credentials and travel across America now bringing truth, dignity, and calm back to the peoples of the land. I have held Shamanic Ceremony in over 30 different states.

  • bpollen

This kinda crap is why I say that I used to be Catholic… but I got better!

  • Ninong

I think this is more a theatrical performance than an actual exorcism directed at a specific person believed (by him) to be possessed by the devil. No, exorcisms don’t have to be authorized by the Vatican but they are usually referred to a “trained” exorcist and the Vatican issued guidelines in 1999 requiring that a person believed to be possessed by the devil must first be evaluated by medical doctors to determine if their condition could be the result of a medical or psychiatric problem.

Exorcisms are still part of Catholic tradition but they are not nearly as common in the U.S. as they are in Europe, Latin America and Africa. The Vatican still has an official exorcist and, from some of his pronouncements, I would say he’s crazy as a loon. Exorcism is something most of them try to avoid talking about lest the rest of the world think they’re nuts.

If Paprocki gets a lot of publicity from this stunt it will show the less insane members of society just how ridiculous religion really is in the 21st century. He’s a strong believer in the devil and believes the devil is responsible for all the problems in the world. This guy is only 61 but he laments the changes that were instituted by Vatican II, which didn’t go into effect until March 1965, when he was only 12 years old! One of those changes Vatican II instituted, besides instructing that the Mass should be said in the vernacular instead of Latin, was that the prayer to St. Michael, which was often said following Mass, should be discontinued. That was a prayer calling on St. Michael, the Archangel, to cast the devil into hell.

Bishop Paprocki said that everything went to hell in this country when we stopped saying the prayer to St. Michael, so he had 50,000 little holy cards printed up with the prayer to St. Michael and distributed them to the Catholic schools in his diocese. I don’t know if you went to Catholic school as a kid but the nuns used to give us holy cards all the time. In kindergarten they gave us St. Christopher medals to keep us from getting lost and then much later on the Vatican decided that there was no proof that St. Christopher ever lived, so he was demoted to Mr. Christopher. I guess that means his medals no longer have any magical powers?

We shouldn’t think too hard about this stuff or we’ll crack up laughing at what we were taught as children.

  • Russell C Lewis

This man is a loon and should just shut the heck up except when speaking to his own flock.
An exorcism, really, what is the point? The people who are against gay marriage already know how he feels and the people who are pro gay marriage, don’t care.
And of the day after the exorcism, when the world is still revolving around the sun (yeah, the Church taught that was wrong once), and gay marriage is still on the books and Illinois has not sunk into a pit of fire… all that exorcism will prove is, they don’t work… what then?

Bishop Paprocki may himself be in violation of an edict of Pope Francis who stated that the church should spend less time on niche issues like abortion and not enough on the main teachings of the Catholic Church such as comforting the poor and helpless, and promoting fairness. While he’s so busy finding scriptures, where is one Biblical source that advocates a POPE and his eunuch followers? There is not one. Hate to tell you, Catholics, but the Pope is a madeup title for a man who decides what you can pray, who you can marry, and how many children you should have, and tries to tell governments what to do. It’s no wonder they kept the Bible in latin for so long; they were afraid you all might read it and start questioning from whom they get their power (hint: it’s not Jesus.)

  • Sally

“he banned Catholics from praying?” Seriously? I don’t know about you, but my prayers are private. And if someone told me they’d throw me out of my church due to my private prayers, I would be out the door before they tried that and take my offerings with me. It’s about time these pedophiles stopped preaching morality, since they have no clue what it even is. In a spirit of true ecumenism, Paprocki has invited Fred Phelps, Pat Robertson and Billy Graham to participate in the gay exorcisms with him. Since all of these men seem to be very interested in the demons causing homosexual sex and may, indeed, be somewhat possed themselves. There are the butt-possessing demons ASSmodeus and ASStaroth. And the cock and testicle possessing demons Leviathan and Baal. The demons of the hand Phistopheles and Palmaris. And the mouth demons GlarggkaAKAKAKKK and Pitooee.

These ministers will start with the genital demons. They will use oil and magic gestures culminating in the laying on of hands to these poor men. As they work, the demons will be heard groaning and finally will be totally expelled in clouds of white ectoplasm that the ministers must sanctify and then eat.

Next week they will do another exorcism, this time to drive out the butt demons through the insertion of anointed Holy Scepters.

These exorcisms will be held at a Christian Science Church that was specially prepared for this ceremony: http://perezhilton.com/2013-10-31-christian-science-building-illinois-giant-brown-space-dong-google-satellites

That the Roman Catholic Church defies Jesus is all we need to know about who the RCC worships…

MATT 19: 12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

That Jesus discussing who’s welcome in Heaven re. marriage and adultery.

That the RCC seeks to shut out the follower they lead to the gates, well…

… Jesus spoke out against that, also.

MATT 23: 13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

    And again

MATT 23: 15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

    And with this warning…

MATT 23: 33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

May the RCC rot in Hell…

  • Ninong

Well, as I pointed out 11 hours ago in that thread about Pope Francis being perceived as kinda sorta nice to gays, his position on gay marriage and gays in general is well documented. He thinks gay marriage is intrinsically evil and the work of the devil and designed to destroy the family. He has said so repeatedly. He’s also very much against anything that’s anywhere close to abortion, including all forms of contraception. So nothing Paprocki brings up about Francis’ preaching in Buenos Aires comes as a shock but this guy Paprocki is more of a nutcase that he seems from this piece above.

You won’t believe what shows up in his Wiki profile. He not only hates gay marriage (and the gays, too), he hates the Democrats and he especially hates the Muslims. And he very open about it, too. What he is big on is satan and exorcism. In fact, he organized a conference on exorcism in November 2010.

Who does he blame for the sexual abuse crises that have racked the Catholic Church? If you guessed satan you would be correct.

Who did he call out for particular criticism in his Christmas Eve 2010 sermon? The gays? No. The Democrats? No. Wait for it…

    TSA!

Why TSA? What they they do to him? Nothing. It’s what they’re not doing about another hated group of people that has him up in arms.

During midnight mass, Paprocki ripped airport security personnel for not profiling Arabs and warned that Muslims could impose Islamist values in the United States if they keep moving here until they reach a majority. He also gave a history lesson about a failed invasion of Europe by Muslim soldiers.

“The commander of the defeated Ottoman army, Kara Mustafa Pasha, was executed in Belgrade on Dec. 25, 1683,” Paprocki preached. “Merry Christmas!”

    The homily shocked many.
Yep! That was the theme of his Midnight Mass sermon Christmas Eve 2010. OMG! This guy is a piece of work!
