Stunning video shows you Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia cathedral as it was meant to be

A technically stunning, and visually beautiful, video of proposed construction work on Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, Spain.

The video shows you Gaudí’s original plan for the cathedral that was never finished. But the way the video shows you what the cathedral could be, would be, if they finished Gaudí’s plans if by virtually constructing the cathedral in front of you on the screen.

It’s just a wonderfully inventive, and gorgeous, video.

Here are some shots from the video – showing the cathedral as it is now, and as it would be (the grey stuff is proposed construction) – followed by the video itself. Enjoy.

    It’s kinda gaudy.

It struck me this afternoon that it also looks like the ‘Alien City’ card in the Starfluxx variation of the Fluxx card games series. Neat, even exotic and off-planet, but still . . .

  • Yep, or complex termite mound.

  • Monoceros Forth

Yeah, it is. No thanks to the church, really; it was only in 2010 that Pope Ratzo got round to consecrating the place.

  • Indigo

They are that. Still, it strikes my eye like marzipan.

  • But the organic details and inventive engineering are so beautiful and unique.

  • Is it a Basilica then?

  • Gaudi’s Cathedral is one of the architectural wonders of the world.

  • On the recently ended show ‘Fringe’, they put Gaudi’s unbuilt ‘Grand Hotel’ into the New York City skyline for the alternate universe.

Personally, I love his architecture and wish there was more of it.

  • TampaZeke

    Gaudi was certainly named right.

i knew if i jabbed the hypocrites they would be upset, no faith in your faith i say.

  • Monoceros Forth

    You are such a child.

  • Monoceros Forth

Possibly so, but I wonder. *chuckles* I’m not into football myself but I find myself thinking that an arena would at least have gotten some practical use. La Sagrada Familia on the other hand is a bit of a white elephant.

  • cole3244

another hypocrite chimes in, chimes was to make you feel good follower.

All in your head. Nobody is offended.

  • Monoceros Forth

Yeah, so far as I know, La Sagrada Familia was never intended to be a cathedral in the literal sense, i.e. the seat of a bishopric. People (including myself) sloppily refer to it as a “cathedral” because it’s fancy and huge.

  • cole3244

amazing i don’t even mention religion and the hypocrites are offended, guilty conscience i guess.

  • rudolf schnaubelt

better this than a football arena

  • The video is impressive. I can see Sagrada Familia from my front terrace. There are details that I really like, but the overall building, isn’t to my taste. The expected finish date is 2026, but that depends upon a continuing stream of donations. But this is not the best work by Gaudi.

It was my understanding that there can be only 1 cathedral in any given city/region. Barcelona already has a cathedral.

  • Monoceros Forth

The funding for the construction of La Sagrada Familia is purely private. The Catholic Church has put no money toward it.

  • cole3244

men build cathedrals for a legacy while the masses live in squalor.

heros are more common than we realize but go unnoticed by a jaded elite class.

Thanks for sharing this video, John. Coolest thing I’ve seen all day.

Whenever I see a photo of Gaudi’s unfinished cathedral I think of George Orwell’s infamous description of the building in Homage to Catalonia as “one of the most hideous buildings in the world…[with] spires exactly the shape of hock bottles.” He also pointed out it was practically the only church in Barcelona not torn down or blown up during the 1931 revolution.

  • Indigo

Nicely done. Thing is, I don’t favor marzipan architecture.

  • HeartlandLiberal

Fascinating, but I am wondering if maybe they should have known when to stop. The cathedral as it is is beautiful. The envisioned finished building just piles layer upon layer to the point it obscures itself.

Oh, well. If you are not familiar with Alan Parson’s album dedicated to this monument, go to YouTube, and listen to the song “La Sagrada Familia”. One of the great concept albums of all time, all the music simply exquisite.

Eight minutes, starting slowly and peacefully, then building.

Lovely but what a waste of money. Reminds me of the German “bling” bishop’s expenses.
