Saudi comedian/activist’s brilliant video challenges ban on women driving

Hisham Fageeh is a 26 year old Saudi Arabian comedian and social activist. And he’s done a brilliant video taking on Saudi Arabia’s ban on women driving.

no-woman-no-drive

You’ve got to have some major cojones to be a comedian, let alone a social activist, in Saudi Arabia.

Hisham explains at the beginning of the video that he used to study in the US. Now, no one knows what he was like before he lived in the US, but he’s a prime example of why it’s important for people to travel – including Americans. International travel – any travel – expands your horizons. And it can show you things like the fact that “socialist” health care isn’t the big bad that washed-up-70s-sit-com-stars claim it is, and that yes, Virginia, women can drive without harming their ovaries.

Just as remarkable, Fageeh sings all the parts of the song, simultaneously.  Really brilliant.

Here are the lyrics, sung to Bob Marley’s “No woman, no cry”:

No woman, no drive. No woman, no drive.
No woman, no drive. No woman, no drive.

Say, say, say I remember when you used to sit
In the family car, but backseat.
Ova-ovaries all safe and well,
So you can make lots and lots of babies.

Good friends we had and good friends we lost
On the highway.
In this bright future you can’t forget your past,
So put your car key away.

No woman, no drive. No woman, no drive.
Hey little sister, don’t touch that wheel.
No woman, no drive.

I remember when you used to sit
in the family car, but backseat.
Of course the driver can take you everywhere,
Because the queens don’t drive.

But you can cook for me my dinner,
of which I’d share with you.
Your feet is your only carriage,
But only inside the house.
And when I say it I mean it!

Everything’s gonna be alright, everything’s gonna be alright. (repeated several times)
No woman, no drive. No woman, no drive.
Hey little sister, don’t touch that wheel.
No woman, no drive.
