The Rocky Horror Picture Show intro (video)

I’d almost forgotten to post some fun Halloween stuff today.

And what better way to begin than with the intro to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Lick it!

Michael Rennie was ill
The Day the Earth Stood Still
But he told us where we stand
And Flash Gordon was there
In silver underwear
Claude Rains was The Invisible Man
Then something went wrong
For Fay Wray and King Kong
They got caught in a celluloid jam
Then at a deadly pace
It Came From Outer Space
And this is how the message ran…

Science fiction (ooh ooh ooh) double feature
Doctor X (ooh ooh ooh) will build a creature
See androids fighting (ooh ooh ooh) Brad and Janet
Anne Francis stars in (ooh ooh ooh) Forbidden Planet
Wo oh oh oh oh oh
At the late night, double feature, picture show

I knew Leo G. Carroll
Was over a barrel
When Tarantula took to the hills
And I really got hot
When I saw Janette Scott
Fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills
Dana Andrews said prunes
Gave him the runes
And passing them used lots of skills
But When Worlds Collide
Said George Pal to his bride
I’m gonna give you some terrible thrills

I mean, obviously not, since it’s the longest running theater release in the history of movies… They must have done SOMETHING right… :P

    this is a interesting game..

Brad and Janet held up the Plain Dealer to cover themselves in the rainstorm. As a teenager watching the movie in Cleveland in the 1970s, that was just the coolest thing!

  • Nunzio

That;s what the O is for.

What is Rocky Horror if not camp? High, Intentional, Camp. The most playful kind of all. Good and bad? That’s not really the point either way around. It’s fun. It’s deliberate. And speaking frank-en-furterly, it’s just a little naughty.

  • Bomer

Hope everyone had a good and safe Halloween. I spent the night watching old Vincent Price movies on TCM, including the Pit and the Pendulum which was the one movie that I saw as a kid that gave me about a decade’s worth or re-occurring nightmares.

  • Bomer

I keep threatening that one year I am going to dress as Frank-N-Furter. I got the legs for it, damn it.

  • FLL

Small sign in front of the Denton Episcopal Church:

    “Be Just and Fear Not”

  • FLL

    Uhh!

  • FLL

    Dr. Scott!

We moved to Minneapolis in the mid-90s. For my husband, it was returning home. We went to the Uptown many times. Of course, the Uptown is in Uptown. That’s where I got confused. Uptown was actually south of Downtown. That was not nearly as dangerous than putting the traffic lights where I couldn’t find them.

  • Monoceros Forth

I know that, and that’s the problem. It’s supposed to be bad which dooms it. Bad movies are entertaining only if they were supposed to be good. RHPS is the least funny sort of bad movie ever, the movie that tries to let you in on the joke ahead of time. Self-awareness is lethal for comedy.

  • Straightnotnarrow

This! Uptown Minneapolis, early ’90s. Fond memories…

Pssst! Rocky Horror isn’t supposed to be ‘good’. That’s its charm.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

‘Waste’?! Pshaw! Rocky Horror was never a waste of time.

With your hands on your hips…

  • Whitewitch

You bring your knees in tight.
    But it’s the pelvic thrust
    That really drives you insane.
    Let’s do the time-warp again.
    Let’s do the time-warp again.

  • Whitewitch

And then a step to the right.

  • Whitewitch

Ahhh Rocky….how many nights in the dark with my lighter and spray bottle did I waste? How many times did I do the Time Warp….and now as an old woman…I dream the dream of youth.

  • Monoceros Forth

Rocky Horror Picture Show? Pfft. This Hallowe’en watch The Phantom of the Paradise instead. It’s like RHPS only good.

I’ve been meaning to screen the semi-recent H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society film The Whisperer in Darkness and this might be an appropriate night for it. It was their earlier The Call of Cthulhu silent film that introduced me to Lovecraft in the first place; I’ve heard that TWiD isn’t quite so good maybe but I’ve been putting off watching it too long.

  • Mike_in_the_Tundra

I was a small town Southern boy in a very big Northern University, and I was invited to see a rather strange sounding movie which I assumed was a horror movie. Then they told me to bring a newspaper, toast, and a water pistol full of water. We shared a few herbal cigarettes on our way there. I really got into it.

One night I was persuaded to show up in a Rocky costume. Okay, maybe more than one night.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

Absolutely, provided someone was sober enough to drive us all down to the Strip District.

It got easier when the Primanti brothers opened a 2nd shop in Oakland. Then we just stumbled on over.

How ya do I see you met my faithful Handyman
He’s just a little brought down because uh when you knocked
He thought you were the Candyman.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

    Rocky!

  • Mark Andrzejczak

From what I’ve heard, the lips were Patricia Quinn (Magenta)’s lips, but the vocal track played during “Science-Fiction Double Feature” was Richard O’Brien (Riff Raff) singing.

  • Mark Andrzejczak

CRUCIFY THE LIPS! CRUCIFY THE LIPS!

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

    Hell yeah!

I can’t begin to tell you how many nights I wasted enjoyed with RHPS at the local midnight theater while at college.

    My ‘Magenta’ costume was awesome.

  • SkippyFlipjack

The lips were Riff Raff’s, right?

  • Indigo

Let’s do the Time Warp again!
