The Values Voters Summit is the biggest religious right conference of the year. All the top Republican presidential wannabes drop in to pay homage to some of the most hateful, intolerant bigots in the GOP (and America). And today was no exception. Let’s walk through some of the lowlights:
Jim Bob Duggar (the guy with the immense family and the ‘reality’ TV show) compares the U.S. now to Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.
Ryan Bomberger, anti-choice activist refers to legal abortion as black genocide. Also says that gays are like kleptomaniacs and homophobia is a myth.
Sand Rios of the American Family Association says the Matthew Shepard murder was ‘a complete fraud. 12 October, by the way, is the anniversary of Shepard’s murder. She also says that gay people are deluded and “caught in a web of deceit.” She says ‘fabulous’ ex-gays want to tell their stories. News flash, Sand: An ex-gay who is ‘fabulous’ probably isn’t ‘ex’.
Todd Starnes of Fox News lies about Obama’s handling of the Saeed Obedini case (an Iranian-American pastor being held in an Iranian jail). Fox News itself said that Obama has actually been working the case. But hey, who ever let facts get in the way of rabble-rousing?
Lila Rose, anti-abortion activist, likens herself to Malala Yousafzai. Nice try…but no, not even close. Malala is fighting for the right of self-determination and equal rights for women and you, Lila, aren’t.
Star Parker, conservative African American activist, says gay people should all get back into the closet and stop bothering conservatives with…well, existing.
Brian Brown, president of NOM, says gay marriage is “an attempt to deconstruct the very nature of reality, the very nature of what it means to be a human being.”
Meanwhile, Heritage president (and former U.S. Senator) Jim DeMint advocates a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage or anything resembling such. (Video of DeMint is on the same page as the Brian Brown report.)
E.W. Jackson, the lunatic GOP candidate for Lt. Gov of Virginia says he’ll never apologize or repudiate any of the crazy, bigoted things he’s said. You go bro! Don’t hold anything back.
Rick Santorum tries to liken the insurance mandate for contraception coverage with the French Revolution, and apparently even his own wing-nut audience has no frickin’ clue what he’s trying to say. Oops, sorry, that first link wasn’t to the RWW post. Here it is.
Gary Bauer, wild-eyed goblin, Gollum stunt-double, and once candidate for the presidency, calls Sandra Fluke an oversexed co-ed slut (not those words exactly, but it’s what he meant).
Representative Robert Aderhold (R-AL) and retired General Jerry Boykin, speaking at a sponsored American Family Association lunch, essentially called for the theocratic overthrow of the American government.
Michelle Bachmann now tries to rename the PPACA as ‘Deathcare’ and warns that health insurance reform will turn American into a police state. God, I can’t wait for this woman to become as irrelevant and forgotten as Sarah Whatsherface.
Louie Gohmert (R-TX) revolts against his own party, calling Senator John McCain (R-AZ) an ally of al Qaeda. The dude really is dumber than a bag of hammers.
Joel Rosenberg, end-times loony, compared legal abortion to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, and says he believes God will destroy America.
Ben Carson, the apparently brilliant neurosurgeon I’d never let raise a scalpel anywhere near me because he’s crazy and a Creationist, says Obamacare is the worst thing to happen in America since slavery.
Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) plays the victim card, claiming there’s a rising tide of intolerance against conservative Christians in America. Time to call the Waaaaaambulance.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) spends most of his speech being heckled, and jokes that Obama will try to kidnap him. No, sorry Ted, you’re likely exactly where Obama wants you right now.
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) says the problem is conservatives haven’t been ‘focused enough’ on school prayer, abortion, and gay marriage. Uh huh. You go right on believing that, Mike.
