Russian gay activist Alexeyev has huge new anti-Semitic meltdown on Facebook, Twitter

Russian gay activist Nikolai Alexeyev, who until now was considered Russia’s top lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocate, appears to have ended his political career tonight in a series of anti-Semitic Facebook and Twitter posts that have even his most ardent supporters calling out his ongoing anti-Semitism.

I’d reported earlier on Alexeyev’s anti-Semitic social media posts last week, and on his earlier run-in with charges of anti-Semitism.  Last week, in an apparent fit of ire against a (Jewish) man who penned an op ed in OUT magazine critical of him, Alexeyev retweeted comments calling the (non-Jewish) editor of the magazine a “jewish pig” and “israeli monkey,” and calling OUT magazine a “jewish slut magazine that supports jews and their filthy faggotry propaganda.”  Alexeyev then tweeted and posted on Facebook his own comments about Jewish vodka being made from sperm, and repeatedly use the word “kike” in both English and Russian, in addition to other anti-Jewish comments about the “Jewish mafia” trying to control the world.

Today things got worse.

In apparent anger over cancellation of his participation in a conference call hosted by human rights group Human Rights First tomorrow, Alexeyev responded via Twitter and Facebook with a slew of hateful anti-Jewish comments, since he is now convinced that “the Jewish mafia” did him in, rather than his own rank prejudice.

Alexeyev talked about how “yids” are trying to take over the world, and how they’re now as bad as Nazi collaborators.  (“Yid” is a slur for “Jew,” based on the word “Yiddish,” commonly used by anti-Semites.)  He also uses the word “kikes” at one point, an abominable slur word to use against Jews.  In addition, in his Russian posts, he uses the word “zhid,” which is a Russian slur for “Jew” that several Russians who speak both English and Russian translate as “kike.”

Here is what Alexeyev posted on Facebook this evening.

To their credit, a number of Alexeyev’s most ardent defenders are now criticizing his anti-Semitism.  This woman was a particularly strident defender, until now:

Nikolai-alexeyev-supporter-1

Ironically, American Jews are some of the strongest gay rights allies in the world.  But there’s no point in trying to make sense of bigotry.

While I earlier worried that perhaps Alexeyev had been co-opted by the Russian authorities, after seeing him on Russian TV this past Saturday night he seemed perfectly at ease and perfectly normal.  Short of a miracle, I now believe that this is the real Nikolai Alexeyev.  And it ain’t pretty.

He had an illustrious career.  And it’s now finished.

Wy do you hate Jesus so much? He was Jewish, or didn’t you know?

  • nycloyalreader

The man is under enormous pressure, and sometimes when that happens bad thoughts that so many of us might feel momentarily and then suppress as wrong, just get out there without a censor. This kind of deep set prejudice is probably an echo of what his dad, mom or teachers said. It reflects the society as well as the man who gives them their expression. I think he needs a long rest and good counseling, something that under the present climate in Russia he is unlikely to get.

This is just the strategy that government leaders really like, minorities fighting minorities instead of finding common cause, for heaven forbid a united front might arise to contest wicked policies.

The correct thing to do in a time of crisis (like the LGBT community is facing in Russia) is not to keep attacking Mr. Alexeyev and dividing attention from what needs to be done, but correct him at every opportunity that the statements he is making are hurtful, divisive and just plain wrong and do more for the established government than for the community, AND then move on, pick up the thread, contact another person, do not let one person be the entire opposition, let a chorus of voices be heard from Russia and promoted here by
    all of us.

  • L. Tokomoto

I’ve been watching Russian news media lately in Russian, and this is pretty much par for the course. Russia media has been saying that human rights for gays, women, racial and religious minorities, immigrants, all of them are a Zionist plot to take over the world with the US as their media/military machine. We’ve heard this before guys.
The only way the russians can deflect responsibility from teh government is to pull out the old chestnut – the west is planning against us, The Jews want you as slaves!.
I hope rational russians don’t fall for that garbage.

Jewish privilege? The people posting hate here are the anti-Jewish bigots.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Okay that doesn’t even make sense. Jewish are the biggest supporters of civil rights because they’re really evil? Well that’s an awfully f’d up way to advance your evil agenda by being the biggest defenders of civil rights in the country.

Or perhaps, you’re just a fucking anti-semitic troll?

  • Rob Dowdy

I suggest you actually read it.

  • DaShawn Jackson

American Jews are the biggest gay rights, multiculturalism, etc. promoters in the world because they exist to divide and conquer their host nation. A gay son or daughter is one of the Jew’s biggest nightmares, and so is dating outside your race. Jews are demonic and even mentally ill homosexuals are smart enough to see it.

  • fxx

And what’s wrong with the Anti-Defamation League? How dare you direct hate towards an organization that has helped quell the possible eruption of an American Nazi movement. I suggest you edit your comment. You are an idiot and a fool.

  • Rob Dowdy

No great loss. Except now, scanning the thread, I’m apparently a crazy person who argues with myself on the internet.

That’s awesome! No one will mess with me now. Who knows what crazy thing I might do next?

It’s bedtime here in the upside down part of the world. I’m glad I saw this before I called it a night.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Putin wasn’t wildly popular at all. That’s why he grabbed onto the gay bashing, to find an enemy, like the Jews, that he could beat up on and rally the troops at home.

You’re right, a bunch of Catholic school whelps that troll all day and regurgitate FOX News BS are more credible. After all, college professors and the highly educated are so scary in their intellect. Education is a liberal conspiracy, that’s why I work at a gas station.

  • Anonymous

Still waiting for your “evidence.” Instead we got more conspiracy theory whackjob ramblings about how no journalist in the West can be trusted. Again, no investigation from Russia can be impartial, since it’s NOT ALLOWED to allege leaders of these things or insult them. This is like saying there’s no “evidence” of cruelty in North Korean prisons according to North Koreans, so it must not happen.

I guess you don’t realize that Putin didn’t table this legislation. He only signed it because it passed unanimously in the Duma and accurately reflects Russian social mores, as conceded by western outfits like the Levada Center.

And sorry, but The Economist long ago declared jihad on post-Yeltsin Russia, so its ‘reports’ on the country are to be taken with a large grain of salt.

American liberal Mark Ames explains why The Economist isn’t to be trusted on this topic:

    http://exiledonline.com/exile-classic-the-economist-the-worlds-sleaziest-magazine/

Serious, intelligent people simply don’t trust major western media when it comes to Russia as they are fully on board in propagandizing against the regime to support American hegemonic ambitions, just like we’re now seeing with Syria.

  • Rob Dowdy

A man who would casually steal a piece of valuable jewelry from a guest is certainly the be held in the highest regard, right?

    Then there’s this:

A RIGGED election, a jailed popular blogger, an arrogant leader and quiescent television: in the past week the Kremlin has used all of these to trigger Russia’s deepest political crisis in years. This may not be the beginning of a revolution, but it is the end of Vladimir Putin’s era of alleged stability, which started over a decade ago.

Only a few weeks ago Russia’s Duma election looked likely to be a non-event with a predetermined outcome. Genuine opposition was barred, state TV propaganda was at full throttle and Mr Putin, Russia’s prime minister, and Dmitry Medvedev, the outgoing president, were competing to make pledges of handouts. Governors were set specific targets for how many votes their region should deliver to United Russia, the ruling party. Yet the election, on December 4th, has burst open Mr Putin’s political monopoly.

United Russia’s official result was less than 50%, down from 64% at the last election, four years ago. The true figure, say independent monitors, was 15 to 20 points lower. In some regions the party could lose control over local councils. In the polling station where Mr Putin himself voted (and which was probably not tampered with) United Russia got only 23.7%, losing to the Communists, who took 26.3%. Mr Putin seemed furious. Mr Medvedev denied electoral violations but called Vladimir Churov, the head of the electoral commission, “almost a magician”.

But now that’s all faded into the background since he’s got everyone riled up about the gays and about evil Westerners wanting to force our deviant notions of “human rights” and “decency” onto fine, upstanding Russian patriots who attack, humiliate, and urinate on defenseless young boys in the name of Mother Russia (and the “police” who are working so hard to bring them to justice).

I’m sure the timing is just a coincidence.

  • http://www.saloforum.com/ Niccolo Salo

As expected, you can’t provide any evidence of your claim. No surprise here.

Russia is not worth the effort to “smear,” it convinces itself it’s a productive country but it’s just full of peasants and greedy leaders

  • Rob Dowdy

And then went back and edited his comments to change their content much later (several times throughout the thread, actually).

That’s not pathetic at all, is it?

  • http://www.saloforum.com/ Niccolo Salo

Which evidence? Smears are easy to make and they are a staple of western journalism, especially when it comes to Russia.

  • Anonymous

Like your friends, you simply deny any evidence with no proof that these are “lies.” I’m not sure you are aware that Serbia is not Russia and your example is worthless. And in a country where it’s illegal to insult politicians, you won’t find a credible investigation regardless. Niccolo Salo, what part of Russia are you from with that name? It sounds like you are just as nosy and concerned with other countries.

  • Rob Dowdy

Do you realize how obvious and pathetic it is that you are going back and editing your comments to totally change their content after people have replied to them?

  • http://www.saloforum.com/ Niccolo Salo

The accusations of rigging refer to the Duma election and the accusations come from the two largest opposition parties who are actually in favour of re-criminalizing homosexuality in Russia. Putin is a moderating influence in respect to prevailing Russian social mores.

As for ‘stealing money’ those are simply cheap journalistic lies that ignorant people in the Anglosphere lap up like milk. The same charges were levied against Milosevic to the tune of of 20 billion dollars worth in the lead up to the bombing of Serbia. All they ever found was 1.2 million in family wealth. It’s a cheap smear tactic used against anyone that won’t bend over to Washington and its dictates.

In short, western media isn’t to be trusted when discussing Russia.

Lol. How exactly is the Holocaust a “card”? Citing a recent genocide as evidence for prejudice in the modern world is far from a “card.” You’re just an attention-seeking idiot that will believe any conspiracy theory. Time to put on a tinfoil hat and eat a solid protein meal.
If you have evidence refuting the Holocaust, let’s hear it. Instead, I think you’re just a crybaby who tries to shut down any valid point, because you’ve got nothing.

You seem to not be aware of Russian affairs and how wildly popular Putin is amongst Russian citizens, especially in light of how his leadership has greatly increased the standard of living in Russia since the disaster of the Yeltsin years.

It’s little wonder why he’s popular, which even pro-western outfits like the Levada Center have conceded.

Levada pegs his support at over 60%. Using your ‘logic’, you’re condemning 60% of Russians as idiots.

Odds are that you are either American or from some other place in the Anglosphere where ignorance of Russian affairs is legendary.

  • Rob Dowdy

I believe in ending bigotry and I’m parroting the lines in some manual somewhere? You kept mentioning it (Hasbara/JIDF), so I Googled it. I’d never heard of it before, believe it or not.

Why don’t you look through my comment history.

This is the first time I’ve ever uttered the word “Jew” in any of them, I think. I’ve never had occasion.

I post under my own name. I am no one special, on no one’s payroll. I’m a gay guy who grew up in extremely rural north Florida in an environment festering with racism and bigotry. I often feared for my safety as a teenager because there were people who would have hurt me, or worse, for being gay. I spent many years listening to my “friends” and many of the adults in my life talk about blacks as if they were vermin and about gays as if they were something even more unspeakably despicable.

I heard it, I lived it, for years until it almost broke me because it was just so wrong and so pervasive and there was nothing I could do about it. All I could do was keep my head down until finally the chance came for me to slink away with my tail between my legs in the hopes of finding somewhere bigger and better where I could finally be free.

So now when I see people being treated unfairly I speak out. I do it to make up for all the times I was too cowardly (with good reason or not) to speak out before.

I don’t need any damn PR manual or talking points for that. I say what I believe and, again, I use my own name to do it (unlike you).

If you disagree with my ideas, fine. But they are my ideas and I earned them the hard way.

  • Turtaan

I never said that, you just have all of the right lines out of the official Hasbara playbook (The WUJS 2002 Hasbara handbook, for those curious to know what I’m talking about) to make me doubt your sincerity in intent.

  • Rob Dowdy

Because anyone who doesn’t agree with you about the Jews is beholden to the Jews.

However, you’re name is Rebecca and your modus operandi is right out of the Hasbara playbook, so I’m going to go ahead and say you’re Jewish.

  • Rob Dowdy

“Politically incorrect”? Goes a bit beyond that, I think.

But tell me, is it awful, going about your daily life so full of anger and hate and resentment? I’ve always imagined it would be a deeply frustrating and unrewarding way to live.

But you get to be the star of the show, right, in this world you’ve constructed where you play both victim and hero, the lone cryer shouting into the wind, trying to save the world from the gathering threat it refuses to acknowledge, the dark storm just beyond the horizon that will scrub the land clean of us.

People like me, who see you for what you are, must bug the hell out of you. So why don’t you scurry back under the stove? The lights are on now and people see you for what you are.

I’m sorry for you that you turned out this way.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

    Projecting much?

    Hint: I’m not Jewish.

  • Turtaan

The signs of being on the Hasbara/JIDF payroll are strong in this one.

  • Turtaan

Tell me, do you think of “Republicans”? “College students”? “Catholics”? How about “Russia” or “Iran”? If you have thought of any group before in such a way, you are an insidious bigot!

Just kidding. Maybe it means you’re a human and you think of people in turns of groups because that’s what people do. You see I’m Russian ethncitiy, and my culture is a collectivist culture, much like the Japanese, and rather unlike American individualism.

In my culture, if you’re part of the group and you do harm, then since it’s the group’s responsibility to keep you in line/look after you, the group is partially to blame. This is why Stalin’s collective deportations were horrifying to westerners, but made sense to Russians and to the Chinese and Koreans who later emulated such techniques.

I don’t hold all Jews equally responsible, as that’s silly. What I don’t like is the Jewish penchant, through their lobbying empire of ADL, Simon Wiesenthal, AIPAC, SPLC, etc. etc. manage to control the debate and frame of the debate in the media, and thus we’re supposed to accept accusations of antisemitism without question, or even consider them immediately wrong in an emotional, knee-jerk reaction.

I’m not a racist; I believe in no such thing as biological race. But I’d be damned if I said I thought all cultures are created intrinsically equal, and I doubt you really believe that in your heart as well.

  • Rob Dowdy

See what you did there? When you referred to what “The Jews” think as if the entire race is just one big, amorphous hive mind? A ravenous blob of selfish intent, out to take over the world and devour all that stands before it?

    That’s the definition of racism.

It’s stupid. It’s pathetic. It’s juvenile. It shuts down debate and destroys any chance for a meeting of the minds. I mean, how does one reason with a scary, giant Jewish hive mind?

Of course, I’d wager it’d be somewhat easier than reasoning with the likes of you.

  • Turtaan

I call BS. You have no evidence for anything to say. You’re just another hog looking for media spotlight and victimhood.

  • Turtaan

He didn’t blast every Jew, he blasted American Jews, and how exactly is he wrong? American Jews are the ones trying to get him canceled from speaking engagements! Just how the media can say white people do wrong or act like a group, here are Jews acting like a group and terrorizing this guy, so he lashes out in an unfortunate meltdown. It’s politically incorrect the way he said it, but it’s not exactly incorrect.

  • Turtaan

Antisemitic = “People the Jews see as enemies to their interests.”

    Iran? Antisemitic!

    Catholic Church? Antisemitic!

    Syria? Antisemitic!

    Opposition to Israeli colonialism? Anti-Semitic!

    Ron Paul? Duh! Anti-Semite!

Wanting to see more diversity in the media (in key positions that matter, not just token roles or acting), rather than just Jews? Anti-Semitic!

People are sick and tired of it. You have used up your Holocaust card one too many times, and people are sick and tired of having to feel sorry for something that didn’t happen in their lifetime, and thus they need no strong emotional reaction to charges of “antisemitism” the way we’re expected to as good little goy slobs.

  • Rob Dowdy

Very true, if a bit over the top in its characterization. Back home (Deep South) I know a lot of gay guys who “aren’t into” black guys. As in, you know, “They’re okay and all but I wouldn’t want to date one. Or have one in my house, come to think of it … I’m just not into them is all, but it’s not really about race.” Right. Of course it isn’t.

But the point is, that person is not fit to be the face of a civil rights movement.

Civil rights are for everyone, they’re not just for whatever oppressed group the activist happens to be a member of. A “civil rights activist” who would gleefully throw another oppressed group to the wolves to divert them from his own is worse than those he claims to fight against.

Robin: Would you consider sending John Aravosis a more detailed account of what happened in 2011? And perhaps explain for all the folks here now, how for Alexeyev (Alexeev, etc.), this latest behavior and statements aren’t new — and neither are the reactions of those who want to overlook what he’s done.

It would be AMAZING to get the real story from someone who was actually there.

    There’s a tips email available — contact(at)americablog.com.

  • Rob Dowdy

I’ve been typing furiously at them the last few minutes — not for their sake, of course, but for those who might be swayed by their swill.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

I was wondering when the anti-Semitic trolls would show up… Guess it’s now.

  • Rob Dowdy

Why would anyone possibly bother to silence him when his behavior is so craven, unhinged, and self-defeating that the only harm he’s doing is to himself and the ideals he claims to represent?

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

If you’ve been reading John’s coverage over the last couple of weeks, there isn’t ‘reasonable’ doubt, and if I came across as impatient, it’s because your question has been asked and answered several times already.

  • Rob Dowdy

Is that what you think he did? You think he “criticized the Jewish lobby”? He sat down and wrote a thoughtful essay on the topic, did he?

It’s okay to disagree with a Jewish person, because Jews are people and sometimes they are jerks or idiots or just plain wrongheaded just like anyone else. It’s also okay to constructively criticize the actions of, say, Israel or the Anti-Defamation League.

But if I became angry at a Jew who had slighted me by canceling a speaking engagement and then took to social media and blasted every Jew in existence as being evil and out to take over the world (using the very talking points of the government I was railing against for oppressing my own people), well, that’s not just bigoted or anti-Semitic, it’s unhinged and craven. And that’s what we’re talking about here.

Bigotry is wrong because it’s wrong, not just because you happen to have been born into a group currently being mistreated.

I don’t care how awesome someone is at activism or raising the profile of a given issue, if the only cause they are fighting for is their own selfish interests then they have no place on the world stage and should be shown the exit.

  • ElcubanitoKC

I guess that changes things quite a bit. By the way, there is no need to get aggressively defensive. I was just, again, bringing *reasonable* doubt into the discussion.

  • Gus Thalo

I think some poasters here should check their Jewish Privilege before spewing all this ‘anti-homo’ hate.

  • Turtaan

let me get this logic: It’s bigoted and “antisemitic” to criticize the Jewish lobby and say they have power way beyond what they should have, and yet you write:

“He had an illustrious career. And it’s now finished.”

    Am I missing something here?

As for whether it’s him – some of the interactions that I’ve seen (from the head of a Russian site lesbi.ru) seem to include a casual enough tone and references to their common history that implies enough familiarity between them. She’s been convinced it’s him. (And she knows him much better than I do.)
As for whether he’s under duress – anything is possible.
Either way, independent of what people outside Russia think, in the LGBT community within Russia itself, he has now lost most of the support he had. If not after the outburst, certainly after he has appeared on Russia Today claiming everything is fine.

I would agree, if he had said talk to “any” black guy or “every” black guy. I guess I read it as casually saying it’s not that hard to find a black guy–and that Carl knows some–with some pretty hostile ideas about Jews or Asians.

What actually seemed most problematic to me was the effort at silencing. One black guy marrying a Jew doesn’t somehow erase the phenomenon of the intergroup strife in places like New York. I imagine it struck a chord with oriole77 because he actually knows there is a history of some strife. So his retort struck me as a way of trying to shut down any mention of that strife, even though it seems like a pretty undeniable phenomenon to me given all the unfortunate incidents in New York over the last couple of decades. I hope it’s better today than it has been, but it’s been pretty ugly at times in some fairly recent years. I just don’t think it’s a forbidden topic.

The initial comment was a tad too broad-stroke – it struck me as a bit odd too, even though, as I note, I get the general point that all communities have their biases. The comment suggested that all black guys hate Asians and Jews, and I’m willing to bet that’s not true, case in point, commenter Oriole77.

  • Skeptical Cicada

Well, it’s moot at this point, because the comments over the last week crossed far over the line.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

I think Carl has a point – the way you phrased was a bit overgeneralized to say the least. I think the point, which is correct, is that minorities are not exempt being prejudiced against other minorities.

  • Skeptical Cicada

Yeah, you’re done because lording over people isn’t as satisfying when they don’t submit.

  • Skeptical Cicada

Wait, so you’re denying that there’s a history of some animosity between the black community and Jews and Asians? Been to New York?

  • http://firefeeder.blogspot.com/ Stratplayer

Oh, for Pete’s sake. Get over yourself, honey. I didn’t see your comment on that point before posting mine. These things happen all the time, in case you didn’t know. Sometimes one’s ideas are not as original as they might initially seem to one. I, for one, did not fancy myself sharing a unique insight, so it didn’t surprise me to learn that it had also occurred to someone else. Feel free to go forth and spread all the bile you like. I’m done.

  • Sergey

Many Russsian LGBT don’t like Alexeev activity like that.

If you wish to “push back” back at Moderators, Skeptical Cicada, which you appear to be doing, you will find yourself in time-out. We would recommend that you police yourself.

  • Skeptical Cicada

When a stranger shows up and presumes to lord over me like a schoolmarm, I will push back hard. Police the arrogant comment-policer.

  • Skeptical Cicada

No, you feel “compelled” to prance about policing other people’s comments like a schoolmarm–even when, as here, you have absolutely no inkling what we’re even talking about–because presuming to lord over other people and pompously “correct” them services some pathetic emotional need of yours. Spending hours sifting through comment history is called being obsessive. Well, you won’t be lording over me, you ass. Go find somebody who will submit to your pomposity. It sure as hell won’t be me.

Perhaps it is time to refer to him as an anti-gay activist, in light of the damage he is doing to the cause.

Skeptical Cicada, you need to tone it down a bit. And Sratplayer is not a “newbie,” by the way.

I am proud to stand up as the Jewish (or ‘yid or kike’ as Alexeev likes to call us) organizer who canceled Alexeev’s speaking in California a few years ago. Although he deleted his anti-Jewish remarks from his blog back then, I saw them and immediately canceled his speaking appearances in Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. I had worked hard to help him by getting organizations to ‘sponsor’ his engagements using their huge lists to announce he was coming. Both synagogues and churches were signed on, and Equality California helped get venues in Palm Springs and San Francisco. I got the venue here in LA.
What shocked me is that a few activists decided to help him anyway. After all, they said, ‘ he had come a long way to speak.’ Thank you to everyone whose comment’s on this blog have condemned his anti-Jewish rants. And especially thanks to John Aravosis for exposing him, and for Karen Ocamb, the reporter who believed me and stood by me when I canceled him. Neither of them are Jewish, and therefore, not a part of what Nicolai calls ‘the Jewish Mafia’ but both of them exposed this bigot for what he is.

‘Rapidly’? There are allegations of anti-Semitic remarks going back to 2011.

  • oriole77

Really? I’m a black guy married to a Jew. Shut the hell up.

  • http://firefeeder.blogspot.com/ Stratplayer

Newbie?? I’ve been commenting regularly on this blog for years. Although I’m not a constant poster I’m pretty sure John knows who I am and what I’m about by now. One thing I am not typically about is policing comments according to my standards of propriety. I felt compelled to respond to you, however, because I was quite struck by the level of nastiness in so many of your comments. One can be forceful and impassioned, even scathing, without being vicious and hateful. You seem to thrive on dishing out mass quantities of personal invective against any and all who might not fall into lockstep with your positions. Your penchant for over-the-top vituperation does not serve your cause well, in my opinion. God forbid anyone should have the temerity to call you on it.

  • A Smith

Of course someone in an oppressed minority could have irrational hatred of another minority. In the USA, try talking to a black guy about Jews or Asians sometime. Yowza.

  • Skeptical Cicada

Did they make the anti-Semitic comments for him in 2011 too? How do you feel about Russian Jews?

  • Skeptical Cicada

Save yourself the trouble of paraphrasing and just cut and paste my comment next time. You’re welcome.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Actually if you did a bit of research you’d see that his social media meltdown began about a week and a half before they raided his apartment. So that is not what led to the twitter and Facebook meltdown. Not naive at all when we google first and opine later :-)

  • Skeptical Cicada

Fuck you, newbie. Shove that up your pompous, comment-policing ass.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

My point is that I can understand perhaps a level of anger and frustration. But what you do with your anger and frustration, how you channel it, is what defines you as a person. Reminds me of how your true accent comes out when you’re drunk. When you’re pushed to the limits the real you comes out sometimes. Dumbledore had a good quote for Harry potter about this:

“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

  • Skeptical Cicada

No. Just because you ran to this site two seconds ago and decided to set yourself up as the site’s schoolmarm in no way obligates any of the rest of us to facilitate your pompous preening. If you haven’t found it, keep wasting your time digging. Perhaps she deleted the embarrassing comments. I have no idea, nor do I care. You see, I’m not spending one instant doing any investigation or offering one word to service the obnoxious authoritarian personality disorder of someone who has no idea what I’m talking about because you’re the equivalent of an embryo around here.

  • Carl

So, they have raided his apartment and have taken over his twitter/facebook and are now doing the classic KGB-playbook of character defamation. And they clearly found a journalist naive enough and media outlet willing enough to serve as their mouth piece. Congratulations. Time for the West to wake up and know when they are being used.
My thoughts are with the Russian LGBT community and their key members, who find themselves prosecuted and their civil and human rights taken away.

  • Skeptical Cicada

    Exactly!

  • Skeptical Cicada

John, you’re tying that comment to the wrong vehicle. Nothing justifies, rationalizes, or excuses his anti-Semitism.

  • Yekaterina Edrich Shkolnikova

Thank you, John Aravosis. I am glad you can see, I wrote this out of my heart out of genuine concern. I hope we all move forward and continue to make life better for all of us. This has bern sort of a set back but for me, it is over, I am done as I concentrate on what really matters, all LHBT that suffer discrimination & hatred not just in Russia but in many other parts of the world such as most muslim countries. We still have a long way to go but we certainly have the drive to get there, so, let’s all get back to work! :-)

  • Skeptical Cicada

No sympathy and no excuses. It makes no difference how hard he was squeezed, there is no justification for virulent anti-Semitism coming out.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Then I see crap like this, and it so perfectly parrots the anti-gay party line that Putin and the Interior Ministry would pay millions to get a “gay activist” to say on their behalf, that it does still make me wonder. I think it’s hard for most of us to imagine one person having gone this far out of their mind, that we look for other explanations.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

We’ve discussed that possibility for a good week now. People who have known him for a while generally think this is the real him. Sadly, if this were the Russian authorities, there’s a boy who cried wolf element to all of this. He’s acted just crazy enough in the past, just anti-semitic enough, that now when he melts down entirely it’s difficult to simply write this off as “out of character” for him. Apparently, it’s quite in character, several say, though over the top compared to his past outbursts. At this point, to me at least, this is looking less and less like the KGB (I know, they were disbanded) and more and more like he himself.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Not to mention, most of us complaining the loudest the past few days were not Jews. The assumption that we are Jews (because, you know, jews control everything) is a further indication of the problem at hand.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

It’s not easy being an activist anywhere. You’re living every day worrying about people who hate you, hating them back, and then not getting nearly enough support from your own community, and that includes financial support. He’s not wrong when he writes, recently, about no one supporting him financially. Having said that, I’m not sure anyone should NOW. But more generally there simply is not a support network in place to reward/support good independent activists. People just assume we’re all independently wealthy, or that the ads on our web pages mean we’re raking in the bucks, and we’re not. I’ve said for a long time now that someone should establish McArthur Foundation Genius Grants for activism. Find someone doing kick ass work and drop them $25k, $50k, $100k, or even $250k. At the very least give them a real reward for the selflessness, and at best give them the kind of money that will set them free to SOAR in their work. It has never happened.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

Some things happened in 2011, but I think it was never 100% clear as it is now. Many criticized him then, but for many it wasn’t entirely clear. Now it is. Having said that, I did notice – as a non-Jew – that even this time people were slow to warm up to the notion that his new anti-semitism should be called out. Fortunately, people are calling it now, but for a while the lack of general outrage did strike me as somewhat troubling.

  • http://AMERICAblog.com/ John Aravosis

I agree wholeheartedly. And I believe you and I may have shared some harsh words on Twitter (I think), but I appreciate you being up front, and honest, about this. I don’t think anyone here is any less committed to fighting for gay and trans rights anywhere, in America or Russia. I do think that, unfortunately, this issue needed to be discussed, as it’s the only way to root out those prejudices, is to expose them. I’ve often heard claims that our community harbors certain prejudices, though usually the claim is that we’re racist, not anti-semitic (at least, that’s what I’ve heard in the past). And I think that any overt bigotry like this – about things that aren’t even debatable – has to be shut down immediately, or it gives the impression that we think it’s okay, and worse, that we as civil rights advocates therefore don’t see bigotry against other communities AS a civil rights violation, thus giving that bigotry almost a patina of approval.

Anyway, I do appreciate you weighing. I was impressed with your honesty. So thank you.

  • voltronforce

Isn’t it all too obvious that Russia security services are behind this. Isn’t it just a little all too convenient for the leading glbtq activist to suddenly be a rapid anti semite? I don’t know if they have threatened him or what.

  • Yekateriina Edriich Shkolnikov

After assessing this unfortunate situation overnight, I have decided this morning to withdraw my support for Mr. Alekseev. I am sadden by the direction, Mr. Alekseev has decided to take perhaps out of frustration and/or stress, however, anti-semitism is as senseless and unacceptable as homophobia or any other type of hatred. I cannot in clear conscience patronize bigotry and find it disturbing that such intolerance is part of our community. This war of words became emotionally draining, painfully exhausting and frankly, feel quite betrayed by someone, I once looked up to, admire and felt respect for. As a Jewish TransGender woman, Mr. Alekseev’s despicable comments are not only hurtful but alarmingly dangerous and harming to the cause of the Russian LHBT community. Despite, this adversity, we must not forget, the real mission at hand nor should we give up on our Russian sisters & brothers. We must continue on our struggle to protect the well-being of Russian LHBT community. The most damaging part of Mr. Alekseev’s derangement is the fact that we are being distracted from the real issue! It is time, we focus again on the real issue and not let bigotry win any more of our attention.

Really? If so, then this has been going on since 2011, when he wrote on his blog:

“The Israeli Prime Minister urged Western leaders to support Egyptian dictator Mubarak … And who after this are the Jews? In fact, I always knew who they were.”

His response at the time? Nearly the exact same temper tantrum he’s been throwing lately.

He was asked on Russia Today Saturday night if he had anything to say in response to claims he’d posted threats to quit the LGBT rights movement and drop the human rights cases he had before the international court.

His response was not to deny those allegations. His bizarre response was to claim it was “tabloid” journalism, and that furthermore, Russian prosecutors could not (in his rather Internet-ignorant fashion) tie him to the social media accounts.

He’s had ample opportunities to deny the posts and tweets. At this point, it’s like asking if the man who beats his wife is being forced to do it, or maybe it’s someone else doing the beating, because everybody thought he was such a nice guy.

  • ElcubanitoKC

What if he is not the person posting this? Or what if he has done this under duress? Putin is a KGB man, and this would not be at all unprecedented from them. Has anyone tried to contact him in person (NOT via phone or email) to verify these statements?

It looks to me as if Nicolai has got himself tangled up into a flame war with the entire gay community. Trouble is, when angry old queens flame, they too often flame out. He’s already burned so many bridges it’s unlikely he’ll find his way back and that’s too bad but he’s the one who did it to himself. Poor thing.

And if you think I only police comments and never offer anything of substance, I suggest you go through my Disqus comment history to see what I have had to say about many different topics over the years. I suspect that you know very little about me, indeed.

  • Thom Allen

Yeah, I remember the good vs bad debate. And, you’re right, it’s still there, just less visible, mostly until some emboldened politician posts a, “Shoot the n*gger!” on Facebook. Then the veneer gets peeled back. Or when a trigger happy conservative police chief in PA makes a You Tube video of him shooting at targets named Pelosi.

But the Supreme Court says that discrimination and bigotry don’t exist anymore. Paula Deen’s restaurant didn’t get packed with customers supporting her – – uh – – right to free speech (and separate entrances and bathrooms). Chik-fil-A didn’t get crowded with Palin and Graham types who were just supporting – more free speech.

I think that more heads will be exploding in the future as the Republicons continue to go down. But the neo-Nazis will continue to persist for quite some time.

Jörg Haider was a politician from Carinthia in Austria who hated everyone who wasn’t 100% German. His particular bete noir was Slovenians (Slovenia borders on Carinthia). He started his own party and it got quite a few votes, enough to become part of a coalition government shortly thereafter resulting in Austria’s having to live through a re-run of the Kurt Waldheim problem they had in the ’80s.

The Freedom Party, founded by Haider, is still the second highest polling party in Austria, but far below the Social Democrats. Haider was killed in an auto accident in 2008 after leaving a gay bar having had a quarrel with his lover. It’s hotly denied by the Freedom Party that he was gay, but the evidence says otherwise.

  • http://firefeeder.blogspot.com/ Stratplayer

In the end, it doesn’t matter whether Alexeyev is genuinely evil or merely a sad mental case. He is just as worthless to the movement either way. I only hope that if it’s the latter he gets the help and support he needs.

  • Matt Rogers

Hitler was paranoid about Jews just as Alexeyev seems to be. In Mein Kampf, he called Jewish people “yids.”

  • Rob Dowdy

Do you know why this individual needs to be shunned from polite company?

He is fighting for the rights of gays because he happens to be one of us. If he had been born a Jew he’d no doubt be fighting anti-Semites instead (and railing against the homosexuals in an attempt to divert attention elsewhere).

There is apparently nothing in him that instinctively recoils from the injustice of bigotry, only a petulant child wailing in self-pity and acting in self-interest.

He is not an activist for anything beyond himself.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

Sorry, but I can’t go there. Growing up in the family I did, I’ve seen alcohol blamed for a variety of abusive and unacceptable behaviors and violence. Unfortunately, focusing on that and raising alcoholism as a theory tends to absolve the abuser of responsibility for their actions.

As Skeptical Cicada says, it doesn’t matter whether his mental illness comes ‘naturally’ or is exacerbated by alcohol or drug abuse. The fact remains he is grossly unfit to serve as the public face and voice for any minority rights movement.

  • BHCh

Haider liked Hitler and hated Jews, so it kinda makes sense. No idea what Fortuyn has got to do with this.

  • Rob Dowdy

But those are the good ones, he’s not talking about them. Only the bad ones. You can tell the difference somehow, apparently, though I never figured it out.

Seriously, though, I grew up in the Deep South and the notion of “good” black folk (knew their place) and “bad” ones (uppity) was still very prevalent as I was coming up in the 80s and early 90s. It’s still there today, bubbling under the surface even if not so freely expressed, you can count on it.

Obama’s ascension stirred quite a few of those types into a frenzy of existential horror. I still recall my mom messaging me in 2008 and again in 2012 with gleeful stories about their poor, bigoted heads exploding after the results came in.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

We can HOPE his career as a political activist is over. The real problems is he keeps getting a pass for his prior work, as well as a great big pile of denial on the part of his supporters, who keep wanting to insist it isn’t really him, or his accounts have been hacked, or he’s doing this under duress.

I call BS. He’d said some questionably anti-Semitic things BEFORE all this hit. Now he’s going over the top, I feel, because he believes he’ll never be held accountable. This is what abusive narcissists do.

Let’s go over the list one more time and apply Occam’s Razor (as well as its corollary ‘Switchblade’ variant, which is “When you can’t figure out why someone did something, just assume its because they wanted to”):

Theory 1: The online social media accounts in question are not Alexeyev’s at all and never were. Undercut by the fact he’s had ample opportunities in interviews for both print and broadcast media to say they weren’t his, and to refute what was being said in his name. In fact, on Saturday’s Russia Today broadcast, he literally echoed something often said by his online persona, that he feels there’s no way to prove the accounts are his. (Proving mainly he has no idea how the Internet works, and neither does his online counterpart identity.)

Theory 2: The accounts were his, but are now under the control of the Russian police / government. Same undercutting as #1. He’s never said his social media accounts aren’t under his control. In fact, he frequently expresses defiance and scoffs that anybody could get in the way of him getting his word out, even the Russian government.

Theory 3: He is under duress. Sorry, but several details jumped out in that Russia Today interview. One was he seemed totally relaxed. Another was he did not recant his opposition to the anti-gay laws (although he did indicate his opinion that they wouldn’t be that big a deal and people wouldn’t be prosecuted, which we already know is false). For those of Alexeyev’s supporters who believe this third theory, I must ask this: If he was such a powerful and brave gay rights activist, why has he found no way to confirm to the outside world that the Russian government is coercing him, and not to trust what is coming from the social media accounts purporting to be his? If the Russians would go so far as to threaten the ultimate sanctions if he should reveal this detail, why didn’t they tell him to drop out of the movement altogether and drop those human rights court cases?

In other words, why is the only tangible result of the alleged coercion the existence of these social media accounts where Alexeyev comes across as an unstable, egotistical, narcissistic, rabidly anti-Semitic asshole?

Occam’s Switchblade: He’s saying these things because he wants to.

By the way, I have a question for people to think about: At what point has Alexeyev ever given credit to other people for their hard work in advancing gay rights and social acceptance in Russia? Or is it always “I did this” and “I’m the leader”? “I have so many cases pending at the European Court of Human Rights…”

I’m hoping this news gains traction. The gay rights movement — in Russia or anywhere — is not well served by being tainted with Alexeyev’s Jew-hating bigotry.

He uses a variant of the hallmark phrase of the racist/bigot “Some of my best friends are . . . ” when he says, “I have terrific Jewish friends, but . . .”

  • Matt Rogers

As nearly as I can tell, Haider and Fortuyn were rightist politicians who opposed immigration and harshly criticized Islam. Fortuyn, at least, was openly gay. Maybe Alexeyev sees himself as following in their footsteps, and scapegoating Jews as Haider and Fortuyn seemed to scapegoat Muslims.

Then, she’ll come around tossing out super-PC language like “LGBTQI” and pretend to be an ally.

In these messages he is simply angry, I wouldn’t peg them as written while drunk, but his earlier messages, 3 sheets to the wind, alcohol fueled rage. He’s a MEAN Narcissistic DRUNK.
No psychotic break, No mental problems, his account isn’t hacked we all saw him on tv Saturday lucid as ever no mention of being hacked he gave some lame excuse about his comments being a social test, he’s a Narcissistic anti Semite DRUNK.

  • Skeptical Cicada

She’s only here to try to stop the gay rights movement from doing anything on gay issues and divert all our resources to her straight agenda. She made that clear some time ago before you started commenting here I think.

  • Skeptical Cicada

We’ve been over that, dear. I guess it’s hard to keep up when you’re so busy wallowing in heterosexual privilege with that husband you can marry over and over any time you want. That was your bigoted taunt, wasn’t it? Yes, it was. Get out of here and stop trying to commandeer our movement for your straight agenda.

What you see there is people too stupid to know you put the torches above your head to avoid burning your neighbor. Also, they simply are unable to recognize Bulgarians are Turkic, not Aryan. Tsar Boris, may he rest in peace, is watching over Bulgaria, keeping fascist tendencies to the less intelligent fraction of the population. So it is with this gay Russian bigot.

Be grateful when the bigots in your midst are this obvious & stupid.

“@n_alexeyev It’s not a secret anymore that I am Russian Jorg Haider or Pim Fortuyan. I will do what they were not able to finish.” WTF does he mean by this? He is also retweeting people calling him a Nazi. Is this a smear campaign? What’s going on?

Whoever it is saying these things, “they” need to be set straight.

This reads like someone is taunting people. Still no proof it is him. Russia is a shady place, man.

“Do you know how many Jews fucked up my speaking engagements in America in the past and in the future?” -Alexeyev
Maybe because he is an offensive anti-Semite. So done! He needs mental help, to accept Jews into his heart and have his computer taken away. He doesn’t realize he’s the cause of all this.

  • Jim Olson

Yep. Time to stop giving him time.

OK, Alexeyev performed a service in 2010 when he got the European Human Rights Court to declare Russia’s prohibition of Moscow Pride in violation of the European Convention treaty that Russia signed. Now will someone get the old vaudeville cane, hook Alexeyev around the neck with it and yank him offstage? We’re begging Alexeyev to stop running his mouth—for the sake of our sanity. If this goes on any longer, Ester Goldberg is going to do a new sendup of Chris Crocker: Leave Nikolai Alexeyev alone:
