Gay Russian protesters attacked, police do nothing (video)

As is typical with the Russian authorities, note how they do nothing at all to the guy who walks up and basically punches a gay protester in the face with a pie.  This wasn’t just a pie in the face, it was a punch in the face.  And the police do nothing in response except take the protester to jail. (Video below.)

The National Cathedral of St. Petersburg posted the video, and called the protester, from the Straight Alliance for LGBT Equality, a “foreign agent.” That’s a cute term the Russians, like their Soviet predecessors, like to use for anyone who’s in favor of human rights. The Cathedral also called the protester a “pervert.”

In a separate incident, activists from the same pro-gay group were attacked while, again, police nearby did nothing.

Here is the protester, Danya Grachev, right before he was punched in the face with the pie (you have to watch the video, below, it was a punch).

This is the same young man who joined a group of young Russians in holding a nationwide event earlier this week in which they thanked the international community for coming to the aid of Russia’s embattled LGBT community.  Here was Danya’s photo that I posted in that earlier story:

One of the most disgusting things about Russian culture is the number of emails sent from whores there. But they’re much less disgusting than the men who want mail order whores. You, Jay, are in a league of your own for wanting to whore out a political refugee. Is that clear?

  • Bobby Rossy

Putin should be tried for crimes against humanity.

  • Mike_in_the_Tundra

I hate to be the one saying this, but that is heteronormative thinking. I was happily married, but I see nothing wrong with my friends who feel they can live happily with a variety of guys entering and departing their lives Besides, do you really think that there is no such thing as a promiscuous straight man?

I thought my husband was gorgeous, but that is not why I decided to live with him.

  • JayRandal

Spunky – WOW who are you to judge me guy? It is guys like you who bring bad name on Gays. I believe in Gays getting married not being promiscuous. I guess according to you nobody should say some guy is cute or handsome?
    Whatever dude.

  • spunky

Posts like the one JayRandal give does nothing to help the GLBT community or cause. He sounds like a gay dude only caring about someones looks. How sad is that!

  • JayRandal

LOL your comment is creepy so whatever floats your boat guy.

Russia, once a shit hole always a shit hole.

  • Rob Dowdy

Just remember, for a very long time now the Russian people have had a very different kind of experience in their day to day lives than we in the West. What they have been shown and allowed to learn about the world has been tightly controlled and brilliantly interwoven with propaganda for many decades. To whatever extent the press here is compromised it is much worse there.

Perceptually, the world we live in and the world they live in are two very different places. Ignorance is no crime, especially when it is being forced on you from above and you may not even know it. Leaders throughout history have used just those tools to distort the views and prey on the fears of the masses to whip them into frenzies of hatred and violence. Not all those people were evil, they were merely tools of it.

  • Rob Dowdy

Every Russia thread becomes your playground, doesn’t it?

Posting pictures of corpses in response to pretty much everything doesn’t make you right, it just makes you an asshole, just like those anti-choice morons plastering dissected fetuses all over the place.

  • Rob Dowdy

That’s borderline creepy. I’m not sure which side of the border …

  • JayRandal

Yuck on me or yuck on Grachev? I think the Russian guy is good looking. Not fat or homely or twinky. If he keeps protesting openly in Russia somebody’s going to beat him
up. Hence he should come to US or go to Europe to live. I have a big house in Georgia so I would take in a Russian Gay guy especially handsome one like Grachev.

  • FLL

Excellent article that you linked to back on August 20 about straight allies in Russia fighting for gay rights. I’m sure that will become common in Russia, just as it is in the U.S. now:

Danya is not the only one who experienced this kind of treatment from those who opposing his belief. There are many like him all over the world. I think Danya knows that as well. I just hope he’ll be more prepared and able to take care of that in the future.

John – you should lobby somebody in Congress to get Danya Grachev out of Russia before he gets
severely injured or killed. Call it a touche asylum here in US to balance out Snowden asylum in Russia.

  • JayRandal

Danya Grachev is a good looking Russian guy. He should depart Russia before some homophobes
beat him up marring his face or kill him. He is welcome to come live with me I am looking for a partner.

  • Tom in Lazybrook

John, I think it might be useful to start listing these attacks and posting the police response to them on a sticky page on your domain so that you can link back to it so that people can see the totality of Russia’s brutal treatment of its LGBT population and the Russian authorities refusal to even pretend to do anything to prosecute those responsible. That way, there could be an easy listing so that everyone can see the totality of the problem. I suggest you categorize the attacks as follows:

    1) Major Felonies – Murder, Kidnapping, Aggravated Sexual Assault. Objective – Show Russia is a DANGEROUS place for Gay persons, and that the violence appears to be occurring with the consent of/negligence by the Russian authorities. Examples would include: The youtube beatings by Occupy Pedophilia etc.

    2) Simple Assault – Reinforces number 1. Examples would include: http://www.ilga-europe.org/home/guide_europe/country_by_country/russia/gay_rights_rally_assault_charge_is_dropped
    Today’s story as well.

    3) Attacks on LGBT Russians in a private setting. Objective, to debunk the Russian PR statement that Gays are free to exist in private. Examples would include: http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/mob-halts-russian-gay-film-festival-and-chases-organizers080612 and http://rt.com/news/nationalists-violence-lgbt-party-295/ and http://www.allvoices.com/news/10262326-police-allegedly-involved-in-attack-at-gay-bar

    4) Denials of basic freedoms of petition, protest, assembly, association, expression, speech, press, religion, and due process. Objective, to show Russia violates its OWN laws and its obligations under multiple articles under the ECHR treaty that they voluntarily signed and to show that Russian assurances of good behavior cannot be trusted. Examples would include: The Pride bans, the bans on public speech in the run up to the passing of the anti-Gay law, and multiple other cases.

  • Bill_Perdue

LBJ and Nixon murdered over a million Vietnamese, Clinton murdered half a million Iraqi children, Bush2 murdered another million Iraqis and Obama is or did commit mass murder in Libya, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen and want to extend those wars of aggression to Syria and Iran, and he pays for mass murder in Egypt, Palestine and a dozen other countries/

Obama and Democrats are the enemies of world peace and so are Republicans.

so how do we focus on getting the US govt to grant asylum for the ones who want to leave? Haven’t they introduced a bill now to remove children – adopted or biological – from gay parents? (@karmanot – not a troll at all, just get annoyed when a totally wrong powerful word is used. for me it weakens the message)

We are going to have to realize we are fighting proxy wars with religious right in this country in other countries. They are losing the war here so they are going elsewhere and spreading their hate and pseudo science elsewhere to turn other governments into their hate proxies. We have to start mobilizing more globally.

  • Anonymous

You’re right, before we had protection for LGBT people America was the same.

  • Mighty

No our anti-gay Christians would love to be doing this. They support Putin’s Pogrom.

  • Mighty

They don’t even respect their own laws yet want us to respect their anti-gay pogrom. Hitler would be so proud of Russia.

  • Anonymous

    Romney would have been better?

  • Timmybear

I’ve tried that. I’ve received no reply at all. In fact, I’ve had no reply at all from my MP or the Canadian Government, not even a ‘thank you for your letter’.

  • Timmybear

Why is it remarkable? It’s what people should be doing. Gay people cannot, by themselves, effect social change. In fact, some of the fiercest warriors for gay rights I know have been straight, because they know it’s important. A lot of gay people are depressingly apathetic, or think that things like gay marriage are the end goal (and I speak as a queer person).

We need to get Obama Administration to offer political or even human rights refugee status to Russian LGBT citizens. It’ll be a slap in the face for Putin and will help bring LGBT people here to America to safety.

  • http://adgitadiaries.com/ karmanot

The Russians are now too provincial and regressive to entertain civilized nations.

  • nicho

It’s like blaming all Americans for the war crimes committed by Obama.

5 – 7 % of all Russian’s are of non traditional sexuality ( lgbti ) according to a member of the Duma who helped pass the recent anti lgbti law’s. Who represents this group in the Duma ( congress ), the vote for these anti lgbti laws was 100 % . What happened to the 5 – 7 % who should be representing the lgbti Russian’s ? . President Putin has said he will meet with homo group’s for ” talk’s “, we can only hope that he is really a good man at heart and not the evil dictator we have seen lately .

  • Bill_Perdue

The oppression will continue to spiral as long as it’s endorsed by cult and political leaders like it is in New York, Kampala, Baghdad and Tehran.

  • Bill_Perdue

Yes they are, or at least some Russians like Putin and the orthodox cults, and no we shouldn’t invade anyone. The US should withdraw all it troops, including mercenary troops and it’s legion of CIA torturers, kidnappers and murderers and it’s air and sea fleets to home bases in the continental US.

Then they can invade New York City and arrest those who promote anti-gay hatred like Diaz Sr, archscumbag Dolan and other Democrats, Republicans and cult leaders who embolden and enable the thugs who kill, kidnap and torture, and beat LGBT folks in that city.

  • jomicur

My admiration for our brave Russian brothers and sisters grows every day. There’s no reason to think it will ever reach a limit of any kind.

  • REALrenovato

Danya Grachev – its in the caption under the top photograph!

  • Bill_Perdue

Make that Putin, United Russia and the cults and you’d be right but if you keep saying all Russians this and all Russians that you’re not being accurate. Millions of Russians are gay and millions more oppose Putin and his base, gangster capitalist, from the left.

  • http://heimaey.us/ jim morrissey

The Russians are torturing and killing their own citizens. Should we invade?

  • Badgerite

Do you know his name? Maybe someone should start contacting the Russian embassy in protest every time anyone lays a hand on him or anyone else openly demonstrating.

  • Monoceros Forth

Not the first time that Russian authorities have suggested that GLBT protestors have been bought off with foreign money. Underlying the gay-bashing is a upwelling of nativism and xenophobia.

And, you know, if the Russians really are afraid of all these supposed foreign infiltrators, why do they want a bunch of foreigners running around their country when the Olympics come to town? Hell, cancelling the games would be a favor to them.

  • pappyvet

It’s an outrage and yet one more stain on the term “humanity.”

  • StraightGrandmother

    Jesus. Damn. Brave young man.
The Russians have accomplished something, they have succeeded in becoming HATED.
