Stephen Colbert on Russian Olympics & the gay

Stephen Colbert weighs in on the growing debacle over Russia’s threat to jail gay and gay-friendly Olympic athletes at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Colbert has harsh words for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the Russians – he even invokes the Nazi Olympic Games in 1936.

COLBERT: “The IOC is just asking gay athletes to knock it off for a couple of weeks, just like at the ’36 Olympics Games Hitler asked Jesse Owens to ease off on the black, you know, ‘don’t be so out there,’ you know?”

  • I love the fellow at the very end who goes on about how he just can’t understand people having a problem with gay folks, since that’s how God made ’em.

You’re right. The Vicco, KY segment was awesome! This bit on Russia was very good too. Colbert is having a great year. He has without a doubt the sharpest, most incisive and funniest show on TV this year – much funnier than Bill Maher or even the Daily Show. Maher’s show always seems to lose steam in non-election years, but he usually gets funny again once campaign season starts.

  • Colbert’s follow-on segment about the tiny Kentucky town of Vicco is must-see as well.—johnny-cummings

Turns out most of them love their gay mayor and are happy about their new pro-gay ‘fair treatment’ ordinance. Most, except for a crusty old preacher (literally) on oxygen support.

The irony wasn’t lost on me.
