Lindsey Graham’s challenger suggests that he’s a gay

GOP Senator Lindsey Graham’s primary challenger, Nancy Mace, suggested that Mr. Graham, a confirmed life-long bachelor who says he does not want to marry Ricky Martin, is a homersexual (h/t Holy Bullies).

Actually, she called him a “nancy boy,” which is an old slur for “gay.”

Now, I have no problem with anyone suggesting that Lindsey Graham is gay, though I’d prefer they avoid using slurs to do so.

Lindsay Graham chick-fil-a

Lindsey Graham celebrating the anti-gay Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.

And for the record, while Graham denies that he’s gay, he just might be the gayest heterosexual on God’s green earth.

The question has been out there for years about Graham’s sexual orientation, and his – how shall I put this? – nancy-boy answers, like this one he gave to the NYT magazine in 2010, aren’t helping put the rumors to rest:

During a South Carolina Tea Party rally this spring, one speaker created an uproar by postulating that Graham supported a guest-worker program out of fear that the Democrats might otherwise expose his homosexuality. (Graham smirked when I brought this up. “Like maybe I’m having a clandestine affair with Ricky Martin,” he said. “I know it’s really gonna upset a lot of gay men — I’m sure hundreds of ‘em are gonna be jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge — but I ain’t available. I ain’t gay. Sorry.”

Yeah, nothing gay about that answer.

Look, I can’t swear to you that Lindsey Graham is gay.

But let’s just say he might want to avoid stepping foot in Ken Cuccinelli’s Virginia any time in the future.

Here’s something not too many people know. I have numerous gay friends and they swear that Tim Scott, SC other GOTP senator is gay, too. This from several sources, by the way. One told me that Scott just got married, but it was nothing more than cover. What is that called? A beard? Well, whatever. I trust these people – they know the gay community in Charleston – they didn’t’ tell me that out of dislike for Scott. In fact, it was just matter of fact.

  • Artoo45

It still sounds ignorant. But, congratulations for pedantry that far surpasses my own. I bow humbly in the blinding radiance of your pedantic glory.

  • kurtsteinbach

I never said he saw combat and neither did Lindsey Graham. A Gulf War Era Veteran, an Iraqi Era Veteran, Afghanistan Era Veteran refers to when one served, not where. That is how the DoD classifies it. At no time did he refer to where he served. I have seen the interview from then and PRs, they say he was a JAG Lawyer. I am considered a Gulf War Era veteran because I served during the Gulf War Era, which the DOD defines as August 1990 – 1998. Someone who served in the actual Gulf is Operation Desert Storm/Shield . For Iraq and/or Afghanistan war one uses the name of those operations.

  • arguethefacts

Best comment on the entire thread.

He never got close to combat. He was a JAG lawyer sitting behind a desk most of the time.

Ted Cruz is quite a bit flouncy himself. Have you ever watched him with the sound turned off (the best way BTW)? Quite swishy. And, with the sound turned up, well, not the most masculine of voices. Sounds a lot like a whiny Kim Kardashian.

  • arguethefacts

It has nothing to do with gay being dirty. It has everything to do with his hypocrisy.

  • arguethefacts

Wrong. Stepping foot (especially into do-do) is an American colloquialism. It means something entirely different than setting foot. Stepping foot is the ACT of stepping into it. Setting foot is putting a foot down somewhere much like you’d set a basket of daisies on a table.

Next time you want to be pedantic you might want to learn more about colloquialisms and that using them is not mangling English.

BTW not to be too pedantic but “I just can’t stand this mangling of English” is a very poor sentence. This is a much better construct: “I can’t stand people who mangle the English language.” You see the mangled sentence you spoke has no object. You aren’t clear about how English is being mangled. Is it being shaken side-to-side in a lion’s mouth? Maybe English has been tossed into a box of Christmas tree lights and we’ll have to wait until December 24th to sort them out and find that one light is making it so the string won’t light and it’s too late to buy more lights?

So C+ for effort. Try a little harder next time, and be more specific in your examples.

  • arguethefacts

It’s been scientifically proven that the more homophobic one is, the greater the odds they’re a closeted homosexual. Like the Bard said, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

  • Artoo45

It’s setting foot. There’s no such thing as stepping foot. Sorry to be a pedant, but I just can’t stand this mangling of English.

The most dangerous type of person is those who can remove emotions from themselves, usually working as politicians, they are entalky unstable and can call under the label “Sociopath”. Though there are a few levels that fall under the different ‘types’ of this disorder, the one that is generally understood would include people like GW Bush, Mitt Romney and Nancy Boy Himself Limp-Wrist Linds-Gay Graham. Most people can put on an act or perform while separating emotions from current thought process, this is actually normal in many professions. The problem with politicians being like this multiplied by 100, who make laws that effect us all, is what makes them the most dangerous type of person. I say we ship them all off to be on an episode of Survivor!

  • Whitewitch

People like Graham often believe that if they don’t want to be something their denial is proof enough.

They discount and deny their erections in public and then pacify them in private. They are tortured souls whose wish is to torture others – in a word, evil.

  • Whitewitch

He might be asexual…I had a friend that was and didn’t have interest in either sex for any reason. I wish though that implying he is gay is some sort of slur, like being called a liberal – implies it is dirty. I think it is far better to say Mr. Graham is just odd, and rude and not very nice. Because those are all true and none are slurs.

  • fletcher

Only lipstick? No nail polish, eyeliners, industrial-strength corset?

  • DastiusKrazitauc

This South Carolina Republican primary will be the “Miss Tea Party Favorite” pageant, and with that anti-gay slur, Nancy Mace is vying for the crown. She’s already declared Ted Cruz to be someone she emulates.

  • LIndsey’s been a joke for many years. Nancy can’t out him because it would be seen as petty and manipulative. So she just hints around at it.

I’m lost why he has not been outed previously. He has an abysmal record on LGBT rights at all levels. I’d be willing to bet that the MSM has met his same-sex dates at various functions (ala Mark Foley) but has chosen not to report it.

  • Jim, Mehlman is currently working to overturn the marriage bans he helped get on the ballots in 2004 to help GWB. However, to the millions of people who are affected by these bans on a daily basis, a few fundraisers and meetings are not enough to undo the harm he’s done.

  • Tom Chicago

a vigorous probe should be demanded.

  • rextrek

Lindsey Graham is a secret lesbian

  • rextrek

    suggests..? really?!? LOL

  • mr_ed

I dunno if he’s gay, but he does seem to give off those vibes, at least appearing to be a little effeminate or sex indeterminate/wishy washy. But I have to give him demerits for being hostile to some of my gay friends regardless of his orientation. Hypocrisy in politics comes with the territory.

  • I like you, Jim. I really do.

But Ken needed to give US a chance first. I feel the same way about any other closet case.

Let them stop actively working to do us harm and start working to make up for it. Then we can talk about forgiveness.

  • I’m the sort who believes everyone has the right to follow their own paths.

If Mr. Graham wanted to do that and to have a struggle with his sexual orientation such that he chose a life of celibacy rather than to accept he was gay, so be it. It’s a choice everybody has the right to make for themselves.

Unfortunately, Mr. Graham became Representative Graham and then Senator Graham. And his internal struggle became externalized in the form of his votes in favor of upholding DOMA and DADT and against hate crimes laws to protect LGBT people from discrimination and from harm.

That’s when he becomes culpable, when his personal struggle for self-acceptance (or the opposite of that) becomes one that actively harms others. He acquired for himself the ability to make our lives better or worse, and he chose the latter.

There’s a difference between making room for him in our ‘club’ and recognizing him as having become an active enemy of LGBT people everywhere. Whatever the reality of his sexual orientation. I’ll not mistake him for anything but the latter.

I seem to remember similar dismissal of Ken Mehlman when we were all speculation on whether or not he was gay. Lindsay Graham maybe an awful jerk, but some of that may come from being a repressed closet case. If he is gay, we need to give the man a chance. I don’t know what Ken Mehlman is up to these days, but I think I remember hearing some real contrition for the things he did to us (and to himself) before he came out.

  • Exactly! That’s the whole problem in her attack on Graham. She’s attacking him because she thinks he’s gay, and views that as a derogatory personal characteristic. Not the fact that he has attacked LGBT people in his capacity as a Senator.

As difficult as it may be, I’ll take him at his word that he is not gay. But it is awfully difficult to do so with all of the rumors and the awfully strong gaydar echoes I get.

Quite frankly, I don’t think there’s a place for him in the club.

I was in boot camp during the Gulf War. Anyone who served between the dates August of 1990 and the end of 1998 is considered a Gulf War Era Veteran whether they were active duty or reserves. Anyone who served between 2003 and now is considered an Iraq/Afghanistan Era Veteran. It is how the U.S. military classifies veterans.

  • Lisa W.

Nancy Mace actually did Lindsey Graham a favor by trying to make his sexual orientation a deal-breaking issue in their upcoming race.

As a Democrat, I have found that Lindsey Graham’s pompous, obstructionist, narrow-minded behavior over the past 4 1/2 years has, quite frankly, made my head damn near explode. But the fact that Ms. Mace thinks anyone’s sexual orientation is relevant in a political race tells me that, really, Lindsey Graham isn’t so bad. And the fact that, to her way of thinking, implying that Mr. Graham is gay and CALLING HIM NAMES (really?) has somehow scored her points or made her seem sophisticated and cool to others, should be more than enough reasons for Democrats and Republicans alike, to give their support to Lindsey Graham.

There are already too many immature, narcissistic, hate-filled obstructionists in D.C., with little to no integrity. Let’s not send Nancy Mace to Washington knowing that her character is, at best, weak. Let her stay what she is, which is essentially, a schoolyard bully.

  • Cecil

During the Iraq war, he served and did his duty where he was assigned. He received a medal for his service, so if the military considers him a veteran, he is a veteran.

  • Anthony_McCarthy

That Lindsay Graham is gay has been well known in DC for decades, everyone, including the entire DC press corps know it. He is one in a line of South Carolina racists who happen to be gay that go back to the period before the Civil War.

  • Mike_in_the_Tundra

I’m certain Ricky Martin was greatly relieved to hear Graham doesn’t want to marry him.

  • Mike_in_the_Tundra

No, he may be homosexual, but he’s not gay. My husband always said that the word gay indicates a comfort with one’s sexuality. Graham is not that. Anyone with his voting record can not be comfortable with his sexuality despite who’s bed he gets into. I’m certain Ricky Martin is happy he’s staying out of his bed.

  • wildwildwest

I’m from New Orleans, and I’ve never heard the term “sister boy”.

I would prefer she didn’t say it as if there is something wrong with being gay. If she wanted to say Graham was a self-hating gay, a homophobe, a hypocrite — or just a self-serving prick — fine. There’s nothing wrong with being gay.

If it is then he’s a closeted, anti-gay homosexual like so many others in both parties. The fact that these creatures lied for many years renders and that most of them fought against or voted against us makes them incapable of ever being part of our communities whether or not they rebrand.

  • silas1898

I wouldn’t expect anything less from a Teabagger like Nancy “girl”. The long knives are out.

  • Just so we’re clear here–

“Lindsey Graham is gay” = Not a problem, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

“Lindsey Graham is a closeted self-hating homosexual who has consistently used his power as an elected member of Congress to oppress openly gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered Americans and their families” = This is the problem.

What Nancy Mace is doing is taking the first of those two statements and making it a derogatory slur. I doubt she’d diverge at all with Senator Graham on LGBT issues. Being a Tea Bagger, she’d probably be even worse.

  • mm

  • SkippyFlipjack

So when you retweet something, you’re saying it? I thought you’re just quoting someone else. Yes it’s clear her campaign liked the “nancy boy” thing, but I think that’s different from Mace calling him one. If I retweet something because it’s ridiculous am I saying it?

  • There really is no excuse- she is using negative, nasty campaign tactics that demean the office and the voters. Her tactics completely turn me off and make me feel sorry for her.

    Now, as for Nancy Mace…

  • Phil Perspective

So, Nancy Mace is just voicing, in an ugly way, what apparently everyone in DC knows but will not talk about? I wonder what the responses will be, if any.
