Niagara Falls stupendous HD video from remote-control helicopter

YouTube user QuestPac a GoPro Hero 3 camera, and a DJI Phantom remote control helicopter (called a quad-copter, apparently), to remotely fly his camera over Niagara falls and take video.

The video is beyond stunning.

First, here’s the man and his camera already inside the quad-copter, on the ground (small white Cylon basestar looking thingy on the left):

Next the images – these are from his video, which is at the bottom of this post.  Make sure you put the vid on HD and widescreen.

These guys have some pretty neat fixed wing rc plane flights on their youtube site. Visually stunning footage.

The dolphin-jumping GoPro fake viral video wasn’t fake. It looks like it was filmed in Carolina and there is nothing extraordinary in it.

Looks like the quad copter crossed the border a few times. Dude might be getting a visit from the DHS in his future. From what I recall, the DJI Phantom sells for around $700, and then there is the cost for extra batteries, gimballed camera mount, almost real time video feed to a small add on monitor usually attached to the controller. But I have to say the quad copter is a cool tool for enabling joe schmoe to do some brilliant aerial videography out in the wide open spaces. The DJI website has some pretty cool videos taken with the Phantom. If I had the disposable income, I would be tempted.

Kept waiting for the drone to fly down the vertical face of the fall.

mother nature’s power and majesty will outlast us all and that is a very good thing.
ps – the music was inspirational.

    John,

I’m sure you’re tired of hearing this but the AdChoices ad in the first first spot at the top left is displaced lower so that it covers the text and intrudes onto the large photo of the man in shorts.

I don’t know if it makes any difference, but this particular ad is titled Small Cap Swing Trades:

    It’s already happening.

In Latin America, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has been collaborating with narcocartels to create remote-controlled drug-smuggling submarines capable of transporting 1,800 kilos of cocaine more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) without refueling. (snip)

And just last year, criminals piloted a $600 remote-controlled quadcopter over a Brazilian prison fence to deliver cell phones to the incarcerated, as was also done in a 2009 attempt involving a drone to deliver drugs to prisoners in the U.K.

My contribution to the video palate-cleansing (h/t to Digby): A livestream of the bears at Brooks Falls in Alaska, in Katmai National Park.

As I type this, they’re showing a big mama with her cubs at the river. Note: When the bears move out of frame, sometimes it takes a few minutes before someone changes the view or switches cams.

I worked a Zombie 5k event and a bunch of runners were wearing a GoPro.

I was wondering about the permission thing. The GoPro’s do grab great video, when they work – the reviews on Amazon are only 3.5 out of 5, a lot of complaints that this version isn’t as good as the previous, or not ready for prime time

  • Drew2u

    Holy shit, that’s a Hero 3!?
Wait, is this a fake viral video like the dolphin-jumping GoPro video that was released a few months ago?

  • Drew2u

I get the joke, but I am against these RC planes that have been around for decades being redefined as, and as such equated to, the same kind of long-range, endurance machines controlled by remote operators, and potentially equipped with a lethal payload.

See, and we thought drones were a bad thing.

Y’know, I’m surprised he could keep that little thing aloft; I don’t know if you’ve ever been, but the wind that Niagara Falls generates at the base is tremendous — lord knows what the updraft must be like. Very cool video.
