Pat Robertson: Gays are confused straights, or have “chromosomal damage,” or something

God bless, Pat Robertson. The one-time Republican presidential candidate, and longtime religious right leader, has opined once again on the evils of being gay. And this time, Robertson has actually outdone himself.

You see, as Robertson explains it, there are no gay people (Pat seems to be channeling his inner Scalia).  And to the extent there are gay people, Robertson says, it’s because they have “chromosomal damage.”

Uh huh.

Pat-Robertson-gays

RightWingWatch has the video and some of the transcript.  First the transcript, then the video:

I am very pleased that we have many, many, many homosexuals watching this program, and many of them are looking for love and acceptance and help. And I’m glad to report that we have thousands of these people who are saying, ‘yes we want to follow Jesus, we’re not happy with the lifestyle we’re in and we want to have a better way.’ So I think it’s wonderful that’s happening….

There are a lot of people are into this homosexual thing because they’ve been abused by a parent, abused by a coach, abused by a sibling, abused by a friend, and they’re little boys and little girls and they don’t know any better, and then they somehow think, ‘well I must be gay.’ Well they aren’t, they are heterosexual and they just need to come out of that.

There are others, maybe they’ve got some chromosomal damage that’s different from heterosexuals.

That’s sort of like Pope Benedict saying gays are “intrinsically disordered,” which is why he said they should be banned from “studying” for the priesthood. Notice he didn’t say banned from the priesthood itself, just from studying for it. They don’t have enough priests already, so they can’t consider letting about 40% (or more) of them go, intrinsically disordered or not.

I guess the way they set up their new banning policy in the seminaries is that the seminarian has to proclaim three times that he is gay and intends to engage in gay stuff. He probably has to publish bans in the local Catholic press for three weeks running before they will take him at his word that he is indeed gay. Then they might want to examine him in private to see if he’s really and truly gay and whether he’s a top or a bottom. Yeah, right!

  • benb

‘Chromosomal damage’?? Oh my god, Robertson is so close to admitting that some homosexuals are born that way.

  • Lee

Hey Pat… what about men who naturally develop full double D breast without taking any hormones? Or men that naturally have huge, child-bearing hips and cannot fit into men’s clothes. Or women with big broad shoulders and absolutely no hips. Maybe the solution is to redefine the definition of male and female. But of course these ultra-conservative, self-righteous, religious bigots would never think of this, because they are incapable of critical thinking.

  • Butch1

Let’s see, Dr. Robertson got his M.D. at his own University? That would explain it.

  • Badgerite

Ahhh! But Pat Robertson defines chromosomal damage, don’t you think? I would not think him good enough to sit in the same room and breathe the same air as those whom he routinely lumps in with those pedophiles and rapists. Jerk!

  • John (not McCain)

I doubt he’s gay, but he is a fornicator. He fucked his whore before they were married and planted some mutant in her.

  • GrantLV

Gays are just straights that need to correct themselves? Actually I think “straights” are just bisexuals that haven’t discovered themselves.

  • John Masters

I’ve got two interesting experiences about that kind of thing. Once had a guy at my church, when were debating a non-discrimination statement, say, “I’m not homophobic. I work with gay people at my job, and I treat them with respect.” I whipped out my phone, and checked his company’s website, to find they have a very complete non-discrimination statement, so I pointed out to him that I would expect nothing less since that was the policy of his company, so she would welcome nothing short of that at his church.

The best one was a debate I was having the past Bishop of the Methodist Church in Florida. The best he could come up with the refute a charge of bigotry was that it was “just not possible because there were gay couples living in his neighborhood.” Apparently he couldn’t, or wouldn’t, call them friends, just neighbors. I busted out laughing at that Archie Bunker comment, and asked him, “So what, do you get to vote to on who moves in?”

  • John Masters

OK…it’s chromosomal (damaged or not), that means it’s not a choice…we’re born this way. Yaaaa, the Christian right finally comes around! Thank you Pat.

I think it is very telling that whenever so many topics on the blog are discussed, we get all manner of trolls coming in to defend them with farcical statements and straw man arguments. When it comes to Pat Robertson, nobody even bothers to try to defend him. He’s simply not at all relevant, even within his own, sad, little bigoted corner of the country. So repeating his nonsense is basically a waste of a blog post.

  • BillFromDover

Why this washed-up has-been believes that he is even relevant is way beyond me.

  • JayRandal

Pat Robertson would actually like to eliminate Gays in gas chambers just like Nazis in Germany
did to Jews. Actually Gay men in Germany were sent to concentration camps too.

  • Sweetie

    He’s not gay. He’s just a troll.

Oh, I think he’ll be going to the
‘Special Hell’ that Shepherd Book warned Captain Mal about in Firefly!
Not because he molests teenagers or talks in the theater (well, maybe he
does THAT… The theater thing), but because he’s such a HATEFUL
BASTARD that the ‘regular’ Hell wouldn’t be punishing enough!

  • angela

    couldn’t have said it better

  • eahopp

Okay Pat, so gays have “chromosomal damage.” What do you do? As “chromosomal damage” would be a genetic defect, then how do you treat such a defect? I doubt that praying, or attending church, or spiritual guidance will help gays who are suffering from this genetic condition. Are you willing to put some of your preaching fortune into finding a medical cure to this “chromosomal damage” so that gays can become straight, correct, Christian members of society. If no medical cure for this “chromosomal damage” to gays can be found, should we just abort all gay fetuses? If the “chromosomal damage” among gay fetuses, early in the pregnancy, then perhaps we should just eliminate the “chromosomal damaged” fetuses, thus solving the problem of all these gays running around, seducing good Christian heterosexuals into their evil lifestyle that they had no choice because it is a genetic defect. Oh wait, you believe that abortion should be illegal.

    Again, what do you do?

  • SyntheticPhylum

Or that “all his gay friends” are fucking with him, because they secretly know he’s full of shit, don’t really like him (but maybe they have to work with him, or something, and that he’s an easy mark!

  • SyntheticPhylum

Oh, I think he’ll be going to the ‘Special Hell’ that Shepherd Book warned Captain Mal about in Firefly! Not because he molests teenagers or talks in the theater (well, maybe he does THAT… The theater thing), but because he’s such a HATEFUL BASTARD that the ‘regular’ Hell wouldn’t be punishing enough!

  • NMRon

Brother Robertson’s accusations, as usual, have no factual basis. Unlike the mountain of evidence for the congenital brain deformities of conservatives. Lizard brained is actually quite an accurate epithet when referring to his crowd.

  • http://fighttherightwingnuts.blogspot.com/ mike31c

So what he said was god made gay people ?

And tell me again who said the line about beware of false prophets?

  • JayRandal

Robertson is a diamond smuggler. He is a religious fraud hypocrite. He is a freak and a crazy loon.

  • bayhuntr

We’re heterosexuals who are pretending to be homosexuals. That’s as stupid as saying a left handed man is pretending to be right handed or even a black man is a Caucasian pretending to be black.

This is why so many gays are atheists, we heard this shit when we were young, knew for a fact it was BS and figured if this creepy old man, would lie about that, he would lie about anything. How many children at 12. 13 or 14 had a chance to know, their church lied? Not many.

This is how it works, you start as a young boy with all the fantasies of a white picket fence, dog, wife and kids. Then you hit puberty, you look at a girl, nothing, then you look at a guy, fireworks and wood! Wait, that’s not right. Maybe if I make out with Cheryl the girl down the street, that will fix it, Nope, nothing at all, but then I see her big sister’s boy friend, fireworks and wood! The creepy old guy on TV is a liar and he’s a minister. Only conclusion you can real come to, Ministers are liars.

  • dcinsider

You have to admit, he has a point . . . on the top of his head.

  • erickMcG

Pat is a confused gay, or has chromosomal damage. Or something.

  • http://adgitadiaries.com/ karmanot

Make that doo doo and I’m on board.

  • Sweetie

After the faulty logic and bandwagon fallacies fail, ad hominem is sure to come next — often with an appeal to authority (demands for censorship of some sort).

  • Sweetie

It’s just one of the innumerable examples of the “all my gay friends” bit.

Pat’s just dressing it up with a bit more spite and condescension.

Here is how the “all my gay friends” bit works:

    1. Person A makes heterosexist comment.
    2. Person B rebuts said comment.
    3. Person A argues with poor logic.
    4. Person B rebuts said logic with sound logic.
    5. Person A invokes (his) many gay friends who agree with his heterosexist assertion(s). This, of course, is the bandwagon fallacy, and it’s also obvious that either Person A does not actually have many gay friends or these gay people have poor taste in friends.

The “all my gay friends” routine is extremely common in any debate involving heterosexists.

  • lynchie

    nice one.

  • http://adgitadiaries.com/ karmanot

God? I suspect he’ll catch one when the heat gets him.

  • http://adgitadiaries.com/ karmanot

He does star in his own movies—good one.

  • http://adgitadiaries.com/ karmanot

The clearest way to detect the more blatant affects of chromosomal damage is to determine if someone is a Republican or not.

  • http://adgitadiaries.com/ karmanot

“we have many, many, many homosexuals watching this program” ROTFL, yeah, like when SNL is doing reruns and a good comedy hour is needed.

  • goulo

In case there was misunderstanding: my comment was just parodying Pat Robertson’s statement. I was certainly not defending Christian fundamentalism.

  • Ted Hayes

“I am very pleased that we have many, many, many homosexuals watching this program, and many of them are looking for love and acceptance and help.” ~ Pat Robertson

Well, they’ve gone to the wrong freakin’ place if they expect anything other than condemnation from this POS!

  • Sweetie
  • ArthurH

Pat Robertson’s TV program is one honey of a boo boo.

  • cole3244

if anyone is confused its a religious bigot like robertson who spreads his hate through the supposed word of god, in my opinion pat is a likely self hating homosexual who can’t deal with his sexual orientation.

  • ArthurH

It could be that Theodore J. Flicker was correct. He theorized that one person’s heaven was another person’s hell and that we occupy it simultaneously. It makes it seem so wonderful that in our heaven we are giving Pat Robertson hell.

  • http://parkandbark.wordpress.com/ Houndentenor

The sad part of that is that there ARE gay people watching his show and shows like it looking for “love and acceptance” an they aren’t going to find it there.

  • PLAINTOM

The last one is a fatal flaw :)

  • http://www.americablog.com/ Naja pallida

Anything Pat Robertson says should be translated into English for the bigot impaired: Send me money.

  • Barry_G_Wick

as most of his followers are anti-science, what about his mention of a topic regarding genetics…chromosomal damage? like he would know of or approve of anything scientific? oh sure, use science when it suits you, Mr. Robertson, then discount everything science knows about how old the earth is, the distant path of human genetics, etc, etc, etc, etc.

  • TampaZeke

In the same way that left-handedness is the result of chromosomal damage, and blue eyes and blond hair and susceptibility to religion.

  • Barry_G_Wick

“many homosexuals watching this program” ??? oh yes, it’s so much more entertaining than Honey Booboo…maybe even Wheel of Fortune…but I doubt that many watch for spiritual guidance, this outdated mentality and more for a good laugh while crying copious tears that such bigotry still exists. I feel sorry for ABC Family channel that has to air this crap….even their disclaimer can’t wipe away the stench.

  • gaylib

Pot meet kettle. I imagine there has been so much inbreeding among the Robertson clan that their chromosomes must be mutated beyond recognition. I think it was actually Jerry Falwell that Larry Flynt accused of fucking his mother, but close enough. (Is it bad that thinking about Falwell and remembering that he is burning in hell made me feel all warm inside? )

  • nicho

I’ve often thought that this was Pat Robertson’s hell. He doesn’t seem to like anything about the place and really wants to be someplace else. Maybe it’s his punishment for being a corporate criminal.

  • nicho

“This Christian fundamentalism thing” IS child abuse. You take a kid, scare the bejeesus out of him with made up stories about hell and damnation, tell him that if he doesn’t conform to your twisted view of sexuality, teach him false things about science, the world, and his own body — and you are abusing him.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

It must be that Pat Robertson’s got some kind of brain damage that’s different from normal openhearted and tolerant people and makes him such a hateful bigot.

  • http://heimaey.us/ jim morrissey

I still don’t understand how anyone can rationalize ancient texts that were written down 20+ years after the events transpired, then translated back and forth over and over by different cultures and had the Romans hand-pick the excerpts they liked best. Do they really believe Paul said this? How can they even be remotely sure about it? I can’t get past that fact. When I can, I can have a logical argument about the other insanity that is pouring out of his pie hole.

  • UncleBucky

    “to follow Jesus”

Doesn’t he mean: “to obey Pat Robertson” and “to give Robertson money” as well?

    Meh.

  • TheOriginalLiz

I suppose we should be grateful that he isn’t talking to a chair …

  • jomicur

Robertson’s notions about human psychology are even more squirrelly than his religious beliefs.

  • PeteWa

what about those of us whose chromosomal damage was the direct result of our gay-causing abuse?

  • goulo

There are a lot of people into this Christian fundamentalism thing because they’ve been abused by a parent, abused by a coach, abused by a sibling, abused by a friend, and they’re little boys and little girls and they don’t know any better, and then they somehow think, ‘well I must be a Christian fundamentalist.’ Well they aren’t, they are rational human beings and they just need to come out of that.

There are others, maybe they’ve got some chromosomal damage that’s different from rational human beings.

As a gay man I think about gay sex 1,000,000 times less than this nasty old thing.

I’m glad he isn’t confused about the definitions of love and hate.
