Detroit archbishop wants gay marriage supporters to self-excommunicate (practically)

The Catholic Archbishop of Detroit, under the mistaken belief that people have any remaining respect for the moral opinions of pedophile-enablers, said that Catholics who support gay marriage should not receive communion, lest they be perjuring themselves before God.  The archbishop was backed up by a local legal adviser to the Vatican, who said pro-gay-marriage Catholics should not take communion.

Raw Story calls this “self-excommunication,” and they’re not far from the truth.

Here’s Detroit’s Archbishop Vigneron:

“For a Catholic to receive holy Communion and still deny the revelation Christ entrusted to the church is to try to say two contradictory things at once: ‘I believe the church offers the saving truth of Jesus, and I reject what the church teaches.’ In effect, they would contradict themselves. This sort of behavior would result in publicly renouncing one’s integrity and logically bring shame for a double-dealing that is not unlike perjury.”

Yeah, that’d be kind of like claiming to be a man of God while having, or enabling those who have, sex with five-year-old kids.

Of course, what the archbishop is really saying is that not only can you not be a good Catholic, but you shouldn’t partake in good-Catholic rituals, if you support gay marriage.  So, basically, you should self-excommunicate, at least de facto, from the church.

And to that I can only say, hallelujah.  Why any self-respecting Christian would remain a dues-paying member of a church that rapes children and then proceeds to hide the crime, enabling even more child-rape, and then blaming the victims, is beyond me.  Not to mention the Catholic church’s bizarre fixation with gay-bashing and oppressing women.  It’s a free country, and you’re free not finance hateful predators.

As an aside, I’m sure you’ll be shocked – simply shocked – to hear that the oh-so-moralizing Archbishop Vigneron is yet another pedophile enabler:

Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 862 7688)

Vigneron fits the mold of recent papal appointees who tend to be extraordinarily conservative yet very media savvy. In public sometimes he says refreshing things but in private, he largely act in the same secretive, hurtful ways, especially regarding clergy sex crimes and cover ups.

- Barely a year ago (November 2007), he quietly promoted a priest “who masturbated in front of an Oakland police officer at a park frequented by children” (according to news sources)….

- He repeatedly did nothing while The Salesians of St. John Bosco played legal hardball and attacked victims in his diocese. (According to a victim’s attorney in the Oakland area, the Salesians have been “the most aggressive church group fighting lawsuits against its priests.”)

- According to an Oakland newspaper “What diocese officials have not done, however, is release complete information about accused priests and the long history of abuse.”

The Catholic church self-excommunicated itself from morality and common decency a long time ago.  Good riddance.

I wanted to leave when the Bishop said I couldn’t be a bride of Christ. Irony is that when he went down the line at Confirmation he had had a bit O’the Bourbon and was behind in names, so I got confirmed as Marie Teresa instead of Patrick. So in a fate of the miraculous (a miracle I say) I was confirmed as a bride of Christ.

  • RepubAnon

Yeah, I was wondering about all the other folks who deviate, however slightly, from the Vatican’s official position. There won’t be very many young women taking Communion if birth control gets added to that list.

One also wonders whether the reason the Catholic is so adamant on this subject is that they’re afraid that the priests would have to start marrying their altar boys.

Another stupid RC bishop with nothing better to do.

the “local legal adviser to the Vatican” is the father of NOM’s Thomas Peters who posts not only for NOM but other hateful sites. the apples don’t fall far from the tree…

I explain that I was RAISED Catholic, but clearly tell people I am an atheist. I would LOVE to be officially excommunicated but cannot seem to figure out how to make that happen. if they ever opened such an office, and charged a fee, the Catholic Church could pay all those settlements in cash, from the droves who would leave in a heartbeat :)

Gay marriage is bad, if you oppose it you can fuck all of the children you want.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS ABSOLUTELY NO MORAL AUTHORITY. NONE.

I was a staunch Catholic for 32 years. I left during the bullying over legal abortion. Simply denying transubstantiation defangs the snake of not participating in Communion.

  • cole3244

its really understandable that the catholic hierarchy would be against same sex marriage because that union doesn’t produce the young children needed for the pedophiles the church protects to continue their sexual proclivities.
as an atheist all religions are suspect but the catholics are especially so.

  • HolyMoly

Vigneron is a perfect example of the hypocrites mentioned in Matthew (Ch. 6). “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them…” etc. Of course, the only difference is that he’s not PRACTICING righteousness. More accurately, he is FEIGNING righteousness, what with his enabling and protecting sex offenders among the clergy. His behavior is merely one example of the widespread rot that’s consuming the Catholic church.

I don’t know if it will ever happen, but it would be nice for those Catholics who have moved forward into the 21st century to break away and form their own church. They could elect their own pope if they wished…preferably someone under 90. Wishful thinking, I suppose.

It’s been ages since I’ve been to Mass but I think I still remember it pretty well, and I don’t remember any stipulation that you need to affirm every tenet of Catholic doctrine in order to take the Eucharist. Also, where does it stop? Failing to take the Eucharist every week is also, if I remember rightly, contrary to the Catholic rulebook. So does that mean if you habitually skip Mass you ought to be excommunicated?

  • UncleBucky

Archbishop: “Scold, scold, scold, scold, scold, scold, scold….”

Now, do you think this fellow is exemplifying Jesus?

  • Naja pallida

I’d be willing to bet you are in the majority of Catholics. Despite what the church itself likes to lay claim to.

Ive always looked at Catholicism more than a religion, but rather an ethnicity. Many (myself included) still identify as Catholic despite not attending mass or participating in church life or activities for decades.

They won’t come wooing, trust me on this one.

  • d3clark

“In effect, they would contradict themselves.” And we all know that the church NEVER contradicts itself. Of course, it got rid of Limbo and a few hundred saints that were venerated for years. Suicide used to be a mortal sin, but no more. The rhythm method is OK but other forms of contraception aren’t. The Inquisition and Crusades may have been mistakes. It sees nothing wrong with “asking” Catholics in California to cough up $$$ to pay for fines levied against pedophile priests. Gambling is bad, unless it’s the Wednesday night Bingo at St. Swithin’s. Zygotes are humans, unless a Catholic hospital might have to pay for offing one of them. Castrating choirboys in the Vatican may have been a bit much. That pesky treaty with the Nazis might have been a little overboard. The Vatican Bank scandal(s). The apartment complex that coincidentally happens to house a gay bathhouse. Nuns are wonderful when they just shut up except to say the rosary – but if they get uppity and get on a bus and go political, they’re slapped down. Nope, no contradictions there.

  • Ted Hayes

i cannot understand why any gay would want to be a member of the Catholic Church (or any other denomination) that doesn’t want them. Take your money and run and see how quickly they will come wooing you back into the fold

I would suggest that the vast majority of people have already self-excommunicated. They like to claim billions of followers, and most of those people may identify as Catholic if asked, but how many of those people have really participated in the religion beyond being baptized as Catholic? How many actually attend services and masses every Sunday, and requisite holy days? How many people actually do the appropriate daily prayers and, and recognize the appropriate fasting and other observances? I’d be willing to bet, as a recovered Catholic myself, a very small percentage are actually following the traditional rules. Especially in the US. The church simply hasn’t even tried to keep up with its followers, and every time another bigot who thinks his big hat automatically gives him superiority over others opens his mouth in public, more and more people see them as irrelevant to the needs of a modern society.

  • Bassman

It’s pathetic that these politicos continue to have tax-free status as they spew their filth.

  • http://www.rebeccamorn.com/mind BeccaM

I wonder how many Catholics believe in capital punishment, and if that’s considered by this and other bishops to be a self-excommunication worthy offense. Or all the hetero Catholics who use contraception and believe it should be freely available.

It always seems to come down to gay right and reproductive rights — believe in either of those, and they don’t want you in the Super-Jesus Pedophile-Enabling Crackers & Juice Club…and insist you’ll burn in Hell forever and ever merely for believing those two things aren’t mortal sins.

  • arcadesproject

Since Detroit is a zombie city infested with poverty, crime and corruption, hunger, functional illiteracy chronic high unemployment and despair, it is little wonder that the Detroit Archbishop chooses to occupy himself with opposing gay marriage.
    Not.

  • pappyvet

Lets put all the “loving christians” of all those many denominations in one place and watch the fights begin

  • S1AMER

Every time some religious figure of any faith or denomination says outrageous things about us, more skeptical people of that faith or denomination move themselves to our side. So I guarantee it: This will drive even more Catholics to support marriage equality!

  • Indigo

Maybe the Vaticanistas feel overwhelmed by the 1.2 billion body count of their members and need to push .2 billion people away in order to get that number back down below a billion?
