St. Patrick’s Day – Music & Food

Last year I spent the day in Austin, taking in music on every corner at the tail end of SXSW. It was loads of fun but it’s hard to compare to this combination. What better way to start St. Patrick’s Day than The Dubliners and The Pogues singing The Irish Rover? Everyone on the stage looks like they’re having a great time and the music can’t be beat.

Since it’s St. Patrick’s Day, a slow-cooked beef stew seems to be in order. There are a bunch of nice options out there online but I’m intrigued with this version (below) that caramelizes the Guinness beer with the beef and onions, followed by the normal slow cooking with the rest of the vegetables. I think he forgot to mention beef stock in there for the slow cooking but otherwise it looks pretty tasty.

    Guinness is always an amazing addition to stews and slow-cooked meals. The unfortunate part is whenever I crack open a bottle, I’m torn between pouring it into the pot or pouring it into me self.

    In the end, the solution as always is to have two bottles on hand.

    “What better way to start St. Patrick’s Day than The Dubliners and The Pogues singing The Irish Rover?” Not bad at all, though my chosen music was Flogging Molly’s “Drunken Lullabies” to start the day.

    I hung out with McGowan in NYC in the 80′s a few times…once I ended up with a bloody nose and each time I lost a few brain cells, but, I never really needed them anyway.

    If you haven’t already, hunt up the Pogues and the Dubliners singing “Whiskey in the Jar.” It’s even better.

    We use Guinness and red wine (usually something cheap and easy like a spanish table wine) for our slow cooked stew. My wife prefers to use beef but I’ve always loved it with traditional lamb.
