Gay man stands up to anti-gay preacher on NYC subway, train full of people applauds (video)

I can’t believe I teared up watching this video.  Apparently New York has been plagued by nutjob evangelical preachers on their subway trains.  They corner people, like little religious hostages, in subway cars, and yell at them about how they’re all going to hell.

Well, one gay New Yorker wasn’t going to take the anti-gay diatribe from the anti-gay bigot evangelical accosting his subway car.  He stood up and shouted the man down, and then something wonderful happened. The entire car of NYC commuters applauded the gay man.

“What the hell are you teaching our children?” the evangelical bigot is yelling at the car-full of commuters, in the middle of an anti-gay diatribe.

The gay man yells over him, “You are bad and full of hate. You are false.  You are a false prophet. Do not listen to this man, he’s scared, he’s full of hatred.”

This goes on for almost two minutes – the preacher screaming, and the gay man talking over him.

“You see, one thing I come to tell you. You can’t put two men together. Man don’t got no breasts, man got penises. Man supposed to be man. Two man got penises.”

At this point, the gay guy had had it.  He jumps back up from his seat and says, “I am a man. And I’m a good man.  And I’m a gay man.  And Jesus loves me. Jesus loves me. Jesus…”

At this point, you hear another guy say “yeah!” and the entire train starts applauding the gay man. I actually teared up.

    where are the atheists and gays out spreading their gospel? have they ever come to your door with their books and pamphlets trying to persuade you or scare you into accepting their beliefs. do you find them all over the world on their missionary crusades?
    the more zealous a person is in their religious beliefs the more dangerous they are–jim jones, suicide bombers anticipating their milk and honey and virgins in paradise. just a quick couple of examples off the top of my head. gun nuts, keep your guns at home and away from me. same with your cults of jesus and mohammed. i don’t want it, don’t need it, can’t use it, thank you very much. what, you still want to insist i listen? then it’s STFU or i might just have to pop you one in the nose.

    Amen! I would’ve pointed out how evangelical Christianity is dooming millions upon millions to the very Lake of Fire they like threatening us all with, because they’re not serving Christ or God, but a man in a three-piece suit who learned long ago that there’s big money to be made off the gullibility of easily-frightened people.

      Because conservatives have managed to create some fallacy that life is “black vs gay” as if gays are never black or black people are never gay.

      A lot of churches have fallen into the neo-con plot to divide and conquer. First it’s the idea of Blacks vs Gays, now the GOP is actively courting the Latino-American population hoping to get the homophobic votes with promises of “traditional Latino family values” as if their are no gay Latinos.

      That’s why you’ll hear so much about how being gay “isn’t the same” as being a person of color and then arguments about who has it worse, like it’s a contest.

    I hope that people don’t believe this is what all Christians think. As a born again believer, I find this “preacher of the good news” so very offensive :(

        Southern Baptist bibles have all kinds of rules about sexuality but nothing against eating pork and catfish? Everyone ignores some part of the Bible, even believers.

        Well, the new testament–the part that Christianity is supposed to follow–says nothing about homosexuality at all. It preaches that you are supposed to love humanity and help people.
        People who use Christianity as an excuse to hate people are basically ignoring what the religion is about. Jesus was a super hippy, and his basic message was “make (platonic) love, not war”. He didn’t say anything about abortion or homosexuality or any of the issues that the bigots and preachers use to justify their hate.

      A love how you folks down-voted this person for being a Christian, and don’t claim you didn’t. This person made a clear statement of “I am a Christian, and I don’t agree with the hateful man”. Check yourself, and examine your own prejudices. People are down-voting Cece and making rude comments (karmanot for example) for no other reason than Cece being a Christian.

      Cece, I am not a Christian, but I am gay, and I appreciate that you rebel against these anti-gay bigots. Don’t let these asshats get you down.

      Don’t let the people below bother you. I’m a gay, transgender atheist, but most of my good friends are Christians. They are, in fact, some of the most progressive people I know. Prejudice can go both ways, and no one should ever judge a whole group based off a couple bad seeds.

    I don’t think any of these people are actual “preachers” in the legitimate sense. They’re all over the NY subways, and they are usually CRAAAAZY. Strangely enough, they’re almost always Jamaican.

    But ahhh, New York. Sometimes I really miss it – the energy AND the weirdness. But not for this crap. Sometimes, a man just wants to read in peace and quiet on a train. :)

      I suggest dealing with Anglo-Canadian hatred of Quebecois before prancing about the world lecturing other people about unity. The only reason you have a conservative prime minister today is because progressive Anglo-Canadians refuse to form a coalition with the Bloc Quebecois in parliament.

      I also seem to recall quite a bit of shouting between progressive Torontonians and that Canadian Tea Party nut you elected mayor.

      So let’s hear a bit less self-satisfied Canadian sanctimony, shall we?

    Its pretty messed up that everyone attacks christians just becuase there is a few bad eggs. Thats the same as every other nation hating America because we have a few screwed up people. I’m a christian and I have gay friends, real christians know not to judge others because it’s no ones place to judge anyone. Everyone is always talking about there being peace, happiness and prosperity. To be quite honest if everyone in the world were true christians there would be just that. Don’t believe me? Look up the 7 commandments, after reading each one, imagine what the world would be like if everyone followed that commandment.

      The nice Christians are Christians. The asshole Christians are Christians.
      There are an infinite number of interpretations of the Bible, which of course is just one many religious texts.

      That man says his religion supports what he says. You say your religion supports what you say.

      That places the two of you in exactly the same position – arguing that your own personal feelings and opinions are NOT just your own personal feelings and opinions, but SUPER MAGICAL, “reason the universe exists” ones.

      Love inspired fantasy and hate inspired fantasy are both still fantasies.
      The only way civil rights happen is when we stop legislating based on religious fantasy, period – NOT by choosing the “better” faith.

        Exactly this. And when I have to figure out which best represents a religion, when on one hand you’ve got supposedly kind and generous souls, and on the other shrieking zealots enforcing a stone-age patriarchy, I find it’s best to turn to the source material itself.

        The Bible.

        Have you actually read it? I’m sorry, but the screeching zealots seem to hold closer to the true intent than the wubby-dubby Jesus followers do. Sure, there’s some nice things said in there… love your neighbor, and all that. But I say a hundred nice things a day, and yet I feel people might take notice and judge me harshly if amongst those nice things I talk about beating my slave, or that uppity women who talk back really need a good stoning. And they’d be right to judge me thusly. So why does your religion get a free pass, travis, just because you refuse to acknowledge the bad side of it?

      1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

      No, the world is not better when people value fantasy over reality.

      7. Honor your father and mother
      Some people dads abandoned them, like mine. Others’ raped them, beat them or instilled their minds with religious-based shame or hatred. Some fathers disown, throw out of the house or even kill their gay sons.
      Some people’s mothers abandon them, like mine, and run off with serial killers. etc. etc.

      Honoring your parents can be great and the best, most appropriate thing to do in many cases.
      In many cases the best thing you can do is escape them, or file charges against them, etc.

      As for the others – be honest, don’t hurt others, etc. – those are GREAT.
      Guess what – you don’t need religion to follow them – you don’t even need religion to know them instinctively. We have empathy. Religion quite often causes people to kill, because religion “others” people. That’s part of its reason for being – to have an in group and an out group. Same way gay people are “othered” – most vociferously by religion. It’s not a bug, its a feature.

      You even “other” people in your assertion about “true Christians.”

      And as far as Christian Bashing, please come back and complain when every president has been non-Christian, and when atheists have pointy buildings on every street corner in which they claim everyone not like them deserves hellfire – instead of teh reality, where atheists are THE MOST DESPISED minority in the nation – more hated than gays and lesbians.

      Come cry about your massive power-holding majority being the target of “bashing” THEN.

      Last I checked, there were 10 ‘commandments’, and one of them specifically implied that women were property with status equivalent to slaves and farm animals.

      I imagine what the world would look like if everyone followed that particular commandment, and end up with Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

      I once told a crazy subway preacher to shut up — this was ages ago, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t even say anything rational and atheistic such as “There is no God” — and the subway car turned against me (dirty looks, pitying shakes of the head), even though prior to that, everyone was rolling their eyes or actively trying to ignore this guy.

      The gay man may have been simply intentionally framing it in terms the preacher could (theoretically) understand, pointing out the inconsistency in the preacher’s own position of claiming to reflect Jesus’s principles and God’s love for mankind etc. That is probably more effective than simply telling the preacher that his entire religion is bogus.

      Yep, but it can be edgy at times. Once, long ago, very early in the morning returning in full leather from the bars we sat in a virtually empty car, except for a hugh black woman and her lively little daughter, who took delight in our gear with its shiny chrome elerments and came running over to touch the sparkle. Her mother freaked out and screamed at us……scenes like that can go South very quickly.
