15 year old Hadiya Pendleton, who performed at Obama inaugural, shot dead in Chicago

Hadiya Pendleton, a 15 year old prep student in Chicago was shot dead yesterday in a public park in Chicago.  Pendleton has just returned from performing as a majorette with her high school prep band at the Obama inaugural.

I found a video of the marching band on YouTube, and am thinking she’s probably one of the majorettes in the video.)

Chicago’s WGN News has the story, but because WGN hired a web person who apparently thinks this is 1995, their video automatically starts when you load the page, so I’ve yanked it.  You can watch CBS’ story instead:

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin told Hadiya’s story today at a gun violence hearing on the Hill:

John, you have roots in Chicago. What’s with the city’s present murder rate?

  • guest1

Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws, proof that more control won’t help, this is a gang problem not a gun problem.

Until it’s national gun control, that’s a silly argument. But then, most gun-nut arguments are pretty silly.

Why does national matter, you think they won’t come in from Mexico? It worked so well with drugs after all.

Seattle has the approximately the same rate of knife violence, theft, and assault as Vancouver. But it’s gun death rate is double that of Vancouver. The reason? Effective gun control in Vancouver – and all of Canada.

Of course, most of the illegal guns in Vancouver come from south of the border… doing something about one problem, would improve the other.

It’s like your neighbor’s water main breaks. At some point, if left unchecked, that water will make its way to your property, and other places it shouldn’t be. Republicans want to just let it gush randomly and hope for the best, while sensible people want to figure out some way of keeping the flow going in the appropriate direction, and limit the collateral damage.

The usual sickening rationalization when a child is murdered by a gun nut. It’s always ‘ANYTHING’ but a gun problem.

Was glancing through a newspaper from 1982 today and came across an article on gun control with a big headline “It’s Not Guns That Kill – It’s The Media” and Mr. Wayne LaPierre was the NRA lobbyist quoted saying that. They (and Mr. LaPierre specifically) are a one trick pony, but as dutiful cowards, Congress cringes every time they haul out their decades old farcical excuses while Americans continue to die for absolutely nothing.

Mexico has very strict gun laws, guess where they’re obtaining their guns?

      • caphillprof

        Apparently from Arizona.

Sadly yes, straw purchasing running rampant.
