Well, that’s a bit awkward for the Maryland Catholic Conference and the Knights of Columbus, two of the key groups behind the anti-gay marriage campaign in Maryland that attempted, and failed, to stop gay couples from getting the right to marry in that state.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, the third largest individual donor to the Maryland Marriage Alliance, a $10,000 donor by the name of Michael Peroutka, who is, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, “a member of the neo-secessionist League of the South, a hate group that opposes racial intermarriage and says slavery was ‘God-ordained.’ ”
The League of the South is a neo-Confederate group that advocates for a second Southern secession and a society dominated by “European Americans.” The league believes the “godly” nation it wants to form should be run by an “Anglo-Celtic” (read: white) elite.
“Somebody needs to say a good word for slavery. Where in the world are the Negroes better off today than in America?”
— Jack Kershaw, League of the South board member, 1998
Well, that’s sure to be awkward, even for a church that aids and abets pedophilia. Especially since the gay-hating religious right has been trying to place the race card of late, and losing (marriage equality passed in Maryland on November 6).
Specifically implicated in this are the Marland Catholic Conference and the Knights of Columbus, both of which took a lead role in founding and funding the Maryland Marriage Alliance, according to HRC:
The Roman Catholic Church, along with the Knights of Columbus, contributed almost $425,000 this year to defeat ballot Question 6, with NOM donating $1.2 million.
Let’s hear a little bit more about the third biggest donor to the Maryland Catholic Conference’s and the Knights of Columbus’ failed campaign in Maryland, from HRC:
Peroutka was a featured speaker at the League of the South’s national conference this past July, as he was in 2004, 2008, and 2010. According to the SPLC, the League of the South “believes the ‘godly’ nation it wants to form should be run by an ‘Anglo-Celtic’ (read: white) elite that would establish a Christian theocratic state and politically dominate blacks and other minorities.” The organization says that its relentless pursuit of white supremacy is “healthy and Biblical.”
League of the South President Michael Hill has written that white people possess a “God-ordained superiority” and that African Americans “have never created anything approximating a civilization.” Its Florida chapter chairman, Michael Tubbs, is, according to the SPLC, a convicted “Aryan” terrorist who amassed a stockpile of weapons and explosives along with a list of targets including businesses owned by Jews and blacks.
Well, that sure is awkward.
But I’m sure the Catholic Conference, the Knights of Columbus and the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), the lead religious right anti-“gay marriage” group, will all be denouncing Petrouka, and returning his $10,000 donation any moment now.
