How to deep fry a turkey

I mentioned that this probably wasn’t a great idea doing it on a wooden deck. I was overruled. Fortunately it went well. Turkey was quite tasty too. This was a few years ago at my parents’:

    I am so gonna have to try that someday.

    But absolutely: Nowhere near anything that can catch on fire. Right now, I’m thinking the concrete driveway at our new place would do nicely.

    As long as I’ve lived in Texas, I’ve never really gotten the point of needing to deep fry everything. To me, a turkey just seems to be one of those things that could go perfectly well without it.

      Best Thanksgiving turkey I ever ate was deep fried. It is very tasty. I highly recommend it.

    Every year about 50 families burn the house down frying turkeys.

    Doing the job on a wooden deck is the most frequent cause.

      Thank you. That was my immediate comment. And it wasn’t readily apparent how putting a wooden board down was going to help. But what do I know :)

        It was when I read about the fire fighter who burned down his house that way…

        Main problem is people overfill the fryer with oil and the fryers are cheaply made because they are only being used once a year.

        If people are going to do it then they have to make sure they don’t overfill the fryer with oil for a start. Good way to do that is to use the fryer to brine the bird and see what level the water is at after the turkey is taken out. But make sure you get all the water out before using it to cook.

        I have just been sent out of the kitchen lest I try to cook the turkey properly.
