Social conservatives still gunning for Romney over his Marriott role

While many are just learning about the controversy sourrounding Romney’s time on the board of Marriott and the issue of pornography in Marriott’s hotel rooms, I wanted to get the reaction of a social conservative who has been following this issue since 2007, specifically someone who has been dogging Mitt Romney about the issue since he announced his first run for President. I asked Gary Glenn, the president of the American Family Assocation in Michigan what he thought about this weeks announcement from Marriott. Short answer is that Romney should expect to hear continued criticism in the weeks and months ahead about his time on the board of Marriot when he meets with social conservatives in early primary states.

Here’s what Gary Glenn told me over email:

Because Marriott is not immediately ending the $100 million-plus it makes in porn sales each year, Romney throughout the 2012 campaign will continue to profit through his Marriott stock from the company’s continued sale of hardcore pornography. As the Salt Lake City daily owned by his own church observed in an editorial, “at least part of the $25,000 plus stock he was paid annually for his board membership came from the money some hotel guests paid for access to the films.”

Note that Marriott says it will phase in the policy change over the next five years, and that “as we transition to this new platform, adult content will be off the menu for virtually all of our newly built hotels.”

Virtually all? Why the hedge? Does that mean some Marriott hotels will continue to sell porn, and continue to put porn profits in Mitt Romney’s pocket?
