BREAKING: DC City Council just passed marriage equality law

D.C. City Councilor Phil Mendelson began the debate today by noting that the District was taking “final step in long march to equality” today with its vote on marriage equality. And, in fact, the DC City Council took that step. The Council just passed the city’s new marriage equality law by a vote of 11 – 2.) Councilors Yvette Alexander and Marion Barry voted no.)

Mayor Fenty has promised to sign the legislation into law. And, we have to keep an eye on Congress, which can overrule D.C.’s laws.

Congrats to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen. Winning is so much more fun.
