The Senator from Massachusetts was an unwavering champion for equality. Kennedy was a supporter of gay rights long before most of his colleagues. He fought the battle on AIDs in the 80s. In 1996, he voted against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) when only 14 Senators voted no. This decade, he supported the marriage decision in his home state and fought the anti-gay constitutional amendments.
